Skate Workout Manmade Loop
7:52 AM; Elm Creek Park Reserve

-5.9 °C; Snow
Got the email from Three Rivers that loop is open (I immediately renewed my pass), Aaron N posted about it on FB and Karl wondered if I would join him. How could I resist? Saw various acquaintances and friends, (Jamie, Joseph, Jake, Tom, Aaron) and an olympian (Caitlin). As usual, conditions were super fast, whatever was left on my Fishers was right on. They work better on the firm artificial snow deck anyway. Put down a solid 17+ laps for almost 23 km. definitely not an LSD, this was a threshold test. Hard to hold my horses in those beautiful conditions, that overdistance has to wait for another time ... Body inventory: gone are the day of early-season shin splints, I guess my technique is coming along. Had some metatarsal cramping starting in my left foot later during my workout, but that dissolved after a couple of laps. Left knee was a little achy around that same time, but that went away, too. Legs are nice and tired now.

Lovely afternoon walk, meant to do only the short one but decided to extend to Lexington. We hiked along the track in full daylight, something I don't like to do anymore because the RR security has gotten sharper. But no lack SUV today, only a big (and I emphasize big) racoon climbing a tree. Amazed that the dogs didn't see it, especially Roux, who picks up a squirrel sitting motionless in the shade at a distance. When I saw it moving first, I thought it was a coyote, until it started going up the tree. tried to get a pic, but there were still leaves on this one, concealing the bandit.

While the wind had dried up much of last night's precip, there were plenty of treacherous looking glistening spots visible. Accordingly, my cycling was on the conservative side. A cold westerly wind was an added factor but all in all, not a bad ride. Not much competition from fellow cyclists but UMN ROTC were out in force. They were rather spread out and not in the way. Opted for the RR service road rather than river right, where the boardwalk is being refurbished. That boardwalk isn't such a great option in frosty weather anyway. Downtown had surprisingly heavy traffic for no apparent reason, I had a pacer in a bus that was going slower than I would typically go, but since it made all the lights, I was happy for the escort.

Mostly running. I mixed up some safflower and sunflower seeds and filled up the bird feeders still feeling rather clammy from the bike ride. Dogs had been waiting for me in the backyard, too, so we were all motivated to get ourselves warmed up with some vigorous activity. We kept at it during most of our circuit. Warm by the time we made it back home.

Cautious because of fear for icy patches, I took off. The few on the neighborhood roads were easy to avoid, the thicker ones were in deep shade at the bottom of Dinkytown Greenway and the northernmost portion of CLT, all easy to cross. Stopped to take a pick of the Hennepin Ave Bridge and the red/white/blue Grainbelt sign, then again, of the snow on CLT. Good ride, considering a decent headwind and the many stops.

Comfortable temps, should have probably dressed down a little. Some of the snow off the road bridges crossing CLT had melted but not all of it. Other than that, the coast was clear. Opted for the Stone Arch Bridge variation since the boardwalk is closed. Found that the RR service road was ice free as well. Made good progress, probably thanks to a little tailwind.

Met the nice lady who told me she had an eight pound hound, turns out I misunderstood, it's an 80 pound hound. She just said hi to the dogs. They only had one thing on their mind, running around in Energy Park, sniffing stuff out. Lots of traffic at Snelling and energy Park Drive stop sign, must have been th queue of cars taking off after a train crossed the road near the readi-mix plant. They saw us and we crossed without a problem. At least a dozen rabbits hopping around on Hamline U campus. That's where Roux's pointer heritage really shines, he picks up even those lurking in the shadows.

Had more time this morning to get to train. Colder by thermometer, but no wind, felt comfortable. On train, there was an altercation between an African-American guy and a mixed-race couple. He was letting off on how unjust life is for blacks while lifestreaming himself to social media and the black woman in the couple countered him. First time I saw a ticket check in the morning, though they did not want to check my ticket. They were evicting homeless people at the Nicollet Ave station. They also calmed down the angry man.

This was supposed to be a hill bounding workout. Karl, who had already gotten a taste of skiing on snow last weekend at Como suggested we should give it a try on the sports fields. We walked out and found the conditions satisfactory. Did about 15 laps in 1:25. Karl made multiple references to the trolls grabbing our skis, indeed,I went down once courtesy of a stuck ski. Margie said we should have let her know, but having 20 skiers on a couple inches of snow would not have been wise. I was handicapped by heavy Landsem skis, I was amazed I could skate them throughout. Must be close to a record, being out this early on skis.

Back to winter mode, very early. Getting used to hitting my departure time just right, to have that comfortable 10' walk/jog window. Today, I had to run the entire way; it's a good thing I did because the train was on time. The head carriage had every seat occupied by homeless people but the middle one had open spots. I am quite convinced that the snow and ice will be melting again before winter starts for good but for the time being, I'll be taking the train.

Scurried along the entire way. Did not feel quite as cold as during my walk from train station. Dogs were into it but Roux had an instant of sore paws at the oversalted parking lot in Energy Park.

Reverse of the previous day, and trespassing. Switched out the SD card on the trail cam, just because i was curious and because I want to make sure it's working. Haven't looked yet but there are 58 pictures counted, when I left it yesterday, there were just 15. I suspect it's just pictures of me. A fun walk, mostly XC between McCulloch and Smith Fire Lane. a lot of deer tracks crossing the lane but not in the woods. On Kjarvick, we encountered Cody and his 84 year owner, both inside the van. he stopped to chat, said he saw our track coming out, but not going in. I confessed to my trespass to cross into the public woods, he didn't seem to mind but mentioned being excited about the upcoming deer hunt. Also thought this was a long walk. Lovely walk along the beach, catching some sun, which still packs a punch. Not quite winter yet, in spite of almost half a foot of snow. measured 15 cm. on the picnic table at the beach. Water tem still at 4.6 C, cold enough to lose mobility, should I fall in.
