Only a short one today. The wind is still howling, driving leaves and swirling them into little piles wherever it eddies.

Heard the rain fall sometime during the night. The roads were wet but not too much so, concrete sidewalks and curbs were already blown dry by a decent wind. As usual, a quiet Friday morning commute.

They said much cooler today, it felt just like yesterday, but I was wearing my thermal base layer with long sleeves. Lovely, breezy fall afternoon with leaves blowing and dogs running this way and that.

Much warmer than anticipated but the wind was strong, fortunately going mostly my way. There were a couple of unanticipated gusts from odd directions. Lots of traffic along the Minneapolis riverfront.

Cars covered with frost when I took the dogs out early this morning and the ride to work felt cold though no wind. Many runners out, not so many bikes. The entire ride is now in utter darkness.

Wow, what an afternoon! From the bike ride, I did not know if I wanted to add a layer. I certainly was sweaty. But the sweat evaporated quickly and the air felt warm. Indian summer!

Air felt warm when I stepped onto Nicollet Mall, too warm to wear my thermal base layer. Wore my white undershirt instead which was just fine! The only cool spots were the tunnel under the Twins stadium and I-35W. But boy, was I gald I did not have this SSW wind when I was riding home from Brooklyn Park, yesterday!

Colder this morning for the long ride to Brooklyn Park. Could not find my thermal base layer so I improvised with a tec-tee and a polartec sweatshirt under my wind breaker. Lobster gloves and warm boot covers rounded out my armor to the cold. Initially, I was afraid I was overdressed, but after half an hour of riding, the cold started being noticeable but not uncomfortable. Tired legs from last night, increased drag from the added layers and an ever so slight headwind made for slower progress. Cold weather riding is just slower.

Oops, I turned on Garmin after switching to hiking from biking but forgot to push the start button. I like those walks with the dogs to come down from a long bike ride. Lovely evening, just relaxed. Little girl saw us come and quickly ran back to the garage, near her dad when she saw us come. I waved to her and she timidly waved back. Roux is super eager in this cool weather, mellie used to be the same when she was young.

As predicted, the ride home was significantly faster. During my morning ride in, I noticed that the Rush Creek Regional Trail had slots cut on either side of the bumpy expansion joints. On my ride home, many of them had been scraped out and filled in with new blacktop. I eventually approached the workers who were still at it, not noticing a gap that had been filled with fresh blacktop but not yet rolled. The workers shouted a friendly greeting and said I had tar on my wheels now. The tailwind was a nice help during the remainder of the trip, not as fast as this summer with barely any clothes on but still 10 minutes ahead of this morning. Favorable lights helped, too, as did dispensing of one layer (the tshirt, which was still wet from this AM) and the boot covers. Felt I was dressed just about right. Repeat next Monday, weather permitting.

Not as cold and much less wind than yesterday evening but more traffic on Snelling and Como. Not sure what that was about, I was riding within my window. Many runners out this morning. I always love seeing someone going at a good clip, making it look effortless, this morning a woman on the campus connector and a man along the river. Contrasting this with all the runners who are obviously suffering. Kudos to them for still having a go at it! While heading into the hills on Sunday, I saw a young woman, high school age, who did not seem very happy on her run. In her case, it was probably because being dressed too lightly, wearing shorts and no gloves as the temps hovered just above freezing. She looked cold and did not respond to my smile and greeting as I rode by.

Windy and warm sunlight. Really noticeable when the sun hides behind the clouds for a couple of minutes. Several people commented on the dogs. Feeling tired but have the ski group workout coming up and tomorrow the long bike ride to TNC.

Another excellent Tuesday night intensity workout! starting with a 15:00 warm-up, followed by four ten-minute intervals of hill bounding at level 3. we were joined by a few new skiers for the fall/winter session, one of which, Joseph, was in our little group with Jamie, Mike and myself. Standing around for a couple minutes was enough to get chilled, the temps had started to drop and the wind was picking up. Glad when Karl showed up with no objections to head for the car.

Ducked into S St. Anthony to avoid wind, it did not help much. Because of the temps, I gave every puddle a close look, too, expecting to see a skin of ice. Only saw ice in one location, on the semi-permanent puddle where the Dinkytown Greenway is crossed by a truck access for the railroad, next to the UMN tennis courts. Not too much competition from other cyclists and even runners or walkers. The bike room at TPC was empty.

Kept a little jog up most of the time. Cooler weather and excited dogs help. Knees not so much.

Friendly Valley-Whiting-Mt. Ashwabay

Haven't done as much mountain biking as I wanted, biking every day to work, activities on the lake take precedent over riding. Now, that it's getting colder, before the ski season starts is a good time to catch up. Wanted to do around two hours today, heading up Friendly Valley. From there, tied into Nemiesto Rd, where I saw the only car, a truck passing me as I had just stopped to take a picture. Then to Little Sioux and Whiting, up a service road to the top of Mt. Ashwaybay. Checked out a new yurt, like the first one, with a spectacular view, this one NE, overlooking Pikes Bay Marina and Madeline. Seriously awesome way to enjoy the outdoors in comfort. I found Raven Trail closed, so I ventured onto Trogdor, a little worried about taking this intermediate trail. It was fine, more advanced features always have a bail. Was also concerned about the leaf litter, but that was fine, too. Great way to spend a morning in the woods.
