Onion River to La Pointe
7:33 AM; Washburn, WI

20.4 °C; Cloudy
Decided to paddle to meet friends at Point to La Pointe finish in spite of poor weather forecast. It rained pretty much up until I left. As usual, running behind. Bonked my head on low shed door frame. As this happens, I find that I understand why humans have kept hair on their heads. As my bald-patedness progresses, my active lifestyle continues to bring the denuded portions of my scalp in frequent contact with pointy, edgy, hard and otherwise unforgiving objects, resulting in knicks, scratches, abrasions and cuts, all of which seem to draw blood. I don't recall this from during the time when I was sporting a mop of hair. The trip to La Pointe was uneventful. I kept up a steady strong paddle to avoid being way to late. Waves increased in size as I approached my destination. There seemed also to be a periodicity of about three larger waves ever 20 or so waves. Close to the La Pointe Harbor, these waves reflected by the sea wall created turmoil on the water, not so bad that I couldn't deal with it.
On the way back, I started in rain, paddling into the waves, which is always more comfortable than following seas. The few waves that rolled over deck were easily deflected by my spray skirt. The waves gradually declined as I approached home. Overall, the waves came from due south while the wind was blowing not too hard from the SW. I took a refreshing bath in the lake (19 °C) after I got back.

La Pointe Ferry Terminal to Swim Finish
8:33 AM; Washburn, WI

20.2 °C; Cloudy
Half walk, half jog to swim finish, after getting into a dry t-shirt and sandals. Too late to see Ann arrive, but I saw her walk up the hill and congratulated her on her second place finish. Saw the rest of the crew and then Mary, later Ian and Julia from MNOC. Headed back to kayak after walking back with Joel into town. It started to rain as I readied the kayak for departure.

Cool, wore my fleece jacket. Walked with Joel. Many birds gorging themselves on service berries this morning, took a nice snapshot of a purple finch.

Cool morning, the coolest in many weeks, probably since I experienced some in Spain and Belgium in May. Dogs were accordingly energized and wanted to go. Put in quite a few running steps to help them out. Needed to get this walk in before the long drive to Washburn this afternoon.

A always, the wind was swirling wherever there were buildings. It's only on the transitway N of Energy Park Drive that I can clearly tell from where it's blowing. NNW or some such, made the ride S on Snelling swift and easy.

Cool but dry. The usual short walk. The rabbits are thick on Hamline U campus, so thick that Roux doesn't know where to point. Kept the pace up a little.

The second perfect morning in a row, cool temps, no wind and clear skies! Having just about recovered from the cold that plagued me during the past few days, I pushed a little harder to give those lungs a little airing out. They liked it! A lot of runners and cyclists enjoying this morning along with me.

Busy sidewalk along Snelling continued, a group of tweens or very young teens passed me on their bike, politely apologizing and the dogs. I helped them to cross the ramp from Pierce Butler to Snelling, which they appreciated. I should have asked, but they looked like they were on their way to Como Pool. Other than that, nothing remarkable.

Another swift ride this afternoon, would have been even faster hadn't it been for two separate cyclist who, like me, wer using the Snelling sidewalk. I was able to pass one by jumping the curb at the Energy Park ramp ut not the other one, who was even slower. Oh well ...

Thue usual warm-up to the bottom, followed by 2 x lock & load then 2 x accelleration. Then, the main attraction of tonight, 6 x 5:00 skate skiing, 4:00 L3 and L4 for the last minute. was the pace maker for the lead group, Jamie, Mo and Alan. They all passed me when I calld 4:00. Great workout. Finished up the night with a couple of beers at Flat Earth Brewery.

We were late this morning. Ran into the older couple walking S, where we mostly see them on our way home. The first beach goers were arriving, too. Those little crustaceans that seem like little gel globules were being swept onto the beach sticking to the soles of my feet. Not a big deal, now that I know they are not diaper filling ...

FR 236 Skate Ski
2:37 PM; Moquah Barrens

23.8 °C; Clear
Had to get this ski in, first time on FR 236 this year, very sad. Nice to do this on the way home, did not want to make this a long workout because I had Mellie and Roux as passengers. One hour, 31:00 out, 31:00 back. I was surprised having the same time for both directions because I perceived more of a headwind on the way back, which was also a little longer because my Garmin took a little longer to pick up the signal when I started. Lovely, as always. I do notice some degradation of the pavement, part of which is breaking off at the edges in places. Someone is keeping up the sealing of expansion joints, which is good. Had tried to catch up with Craig and Liz, I actually think I saw Liz northbound maybe 7 km into the Moquah Barrens. They must have parked farther north, and I missed their van. One funny thing: I have been doing so much classic roller skiing that I started to kick-double pole after a double pole routine. Almost went down, but caught myself. I do seem to get better at balance over time. I have had one of my skis catch on pebbles or sticks recently and compensated pretty much automatically by having my weight on the other ski while dragging the impaired ski behind. Not that I am letting my guard down ... Nice workout, overall!
