Kayak: Lake 28:50 [1] 3.29 km (8:46 / km)
shoes: Hobie Island Adventure Tandem

Bayview Park Beach
10:44 AM; Washburn, WI

23.4 °C; Clear
Quick outing with Lynn, easy to get away but it took some beating to get back home. Some fun, fast stretches as closely hauled as our tub is able to go, with cold water spraying us.

Kayak: Lake 1:26:21 intensity: (1:27 @0) + (1:11:47 @1) + (10:52 @2) + (2:15 @3) 8.48 km (10:11 / km)

Onion River to Pike's Bay
8:07 AM; Washburn, WI

20.7 °C; Clear
Craig came over for a paddle to head over to Long Island. Hadn't checked the weather, Craig said strong winds were in the forecast. Indeed, as we left the beach, winds started increasing. We decided to abort the traverse and head along the shore for Pikes Bay. In the lee of the southern edge of the bay, we donned our spray skirts for the trip back. The wind was blowing hard but the waves were not challenging. Glad we weren't taking the waves abeam, that would have been less comfortable.

Onion to Sioux River
6:41 AM; Washburn, WI

19.2 °C; Clear
A hurried walk to the Sioux and back, got a call from Craig that he was on his way. A guy was at the Sioux whose dog wanted to make friends with Mellie and Roux. Tried to call him back but the dog apparently did not listen, since he kept yelling. My dogs followed me undeterred Made it home just in time to see Craig arrive. Good timing!

Onion to Sioux River
7:33 AM; Washburn, WI

19.4 °C; Clear
Perfect morning, temps went down to 15 °C overnight, it felt almost cold, definitely having my feet in the none-too-warm water. Quite a few people out enjoying, dogs super well behaved. Plover chicks were scurrying into the weeds a 100 m ahead of us, their parents engaging in distraction maneuvers to pull Mellie and Roux's attention away. We waded onto a very long sandbar going across the mouth of the Sioux River. The dogs loved it. On the way back, I scouted out some salvage, a nice 6 x 6 beam, ~6 m long and some 2 x 10 planks. Encountered some acquaintances, an elderly couple and their golden whom I frequently see walking along the shore. And amazingly, I wore out Roux, by having him fetch sticks from the lake. Got home to put a bread in the oven, which just now is done.

Little recovery mission. Got a nice 20' 6x6 out of it.

Kayak: Lake 1:18:36 [1] 8.97 km (8:46 / km)

Onion River to Bodin's Old Fish House
3:30 PM; Washburn, WI

23.4 °C; Clear
Lynn wanted to get on the Hobie and I am always happy to oblige. Not a cloud in the sky and easterly winds made for good speed, except for the last couple km coming back, when the wind seemed to wane. Unlike most times when we have decent wind, I kept pedaling and I felt the effort. Definitely not an aerobic type workout, with high reps at a constant effort. Beaches were busy and there was the constant din of distant motorboats, occasionally with the smell of two stroke gasoline mixed in.

Mix of sailing and pedal kayaking. Perfect conditions, a decent wind but Close to the cliffs, the off-shore wind was doing funny things. Eve at a good distance from shore, the wind was not altogether reliable. Getting back around Van Tassel Pt, The wind became more reliable. A few whitecaps, but nothing worrisome. The water is still pretty cold.

Onion to Sioux River

19.5 °C; Clear
I worked most of the day, then a quick outing on the Hobie with Lynn, followed by dinner in Bayfield. Took the dogs for an evening walk/run instead of their accustomed morning outing. Quite a few people out on the beach, waiting for make-up fireworks in Bayfield. They had been canceled yesterday, for fear of inclement weather, which never materialized.

Nice walk to the Sioux, which looks as wide as the Mississippi. Enjoyed seein a cedar waxwing and Roux chasing a plover. Dogs were being tortured by stable flies, especially poor Mellie.

Onion River to Washburn
8:31 AM; Washburn, WI

23.1 °C; Thunder
Paddled to Washburn-Memorial Park at a pretty decent clip, just a little bit of a headwind around Houghton Point, otherwise calm. Averaged a pace of close to 7:15. Called Craig from the lake, about 10 minutes before arriving. We got to the agreed upon spot at the same time. Craig and a guy who was playing with his lab mentioned that a band of thunderstorms were moving in from Duluth. We had contemplated to go to Long Island and decided to wait till Houghton Point before we committed. When we got there, it was clear that weather was moving in. We started to paddle a little faster, when we reached Friendly Valley beach, the storm rolled in. Luckily no lightning yet. I connected my painter to Craig's kayak to make us move faster. It started raining a little N of Friendly Valley beach access and pouring by the time we got to Bayview Park. Still no lightning, only some distant thunder. We made it, sopping wet but happy with the experience.

Barrier E of Guthrie open, scaffolding under bridge to nowhere removed but barrier at W end of Mill City boardwalk still in place. I noticed that they filled in the errosion gully (maybe a little exagerated expressed) between trail and road along the steep hill from Guthrie to boardwalk. I had just thought a few days back how I would not want to slip in there with my bike wheel ...

Pleasant ride, neutral wind and dry heat. Relatively quiet, traffic-wise, many must be out of town. Will work from home tomorrow to take off early for the lake. Trail along the river was still blocked this afternoon, so I too Stone Arch Bridge. They must have forgotten to take down the barrier.

7:37 AM; Hamline Midway/Como Park

21.0 °C; Light rain
Decided to walk to Dunn Bros for the weekly beans, full knowing that we might get wet. Indeed, we felt a few raindrops as we arrived at the bros. It had turned into a steady light rain by the time we came out and this increased to a downpour. We got wet alright but it was warm rain. The dogs seemed unperturbed and stoically kept plodding through puddles and rivulets. At least not a thunderstorm.
