Yoga
2:06 AM; Hotel Terramar, Sitges, ES

Raced to join the yoga class after taking quick shower after my run. Forgot to turn on HRM again. Very different from my Yoga sculpt class, some more advanced poses. Just three of us with an adorable instructor. She was very patient with me very stiff and inflexible guy. The two other participants had more experience, one was obviously very advanced, the other one knew the poses better than me but like me, lacked flexibility and had probably even less balance. I was sweating bullets, great workout!

Hotel Terramar-Massis del Garraf-Serra dels Paranys
12:45 AM; Sitges, ES

19.9 °C; Cloudy
Started from the hotel and went to the end of the beach wall with no apparent way to get down. Back tracked to the last stairs down and went on the beach, then rip-rap with waves getting to just below my feet. After that, it was easy, along the sea, past some defunct beach operations till where the cliffs started. There was a marked trail climbing, affording some spectacular views of the Mediterranean on one side and with the RENFE on the other. Once I was able to cross to west above the first tunnel, the trail started climbing steeply. Noticed a few other runners when I stopped for photos. Made it to the top of Serra dels Paranys, which has a geodetic marker but no name sign, I assumed I was there based on the altimeter reading. I was pleased to see that the single track trail appeared to be following the ridge I hoped to take back in direction Sitges. After I veered off trail for a few picks, one of the runners caught up with me. I approached him, asking if he was local, he was and gave me some good pointers for variations on trail runs in the area. Found my way back to the hotel easily and pushed the tempo a bit towards the end.

Hotel Melia to C. Bassa-Rodona
10:02 AM; Sitges, ES

A very nice pealla lunch at Can Marti. Then walking to Museo del Cau Ferrat and then to Lynn's conference venue. She was more intrigued with the nude beaches than with checking in at the conference. Academics are always exploring new fields ...

Massis del Garraf
11:57 PM; Sitges, ES

20.4 °C; Cloudy
Did pretty much the rounds of Massis del Garraf today, starting by hugging the coast, followed by a climb bushwhacking and then on the marked trail along the valley with vineyards. I followed the ridge trail until I found myself on a road in the village of Els Cards. Kind of bummed that about a third of today's run was on roads. But the road cyclists who crossed me all had a friendly greeting for me.

Hotel Terramar-Sitges Centro

Leisurely walk along the beach and exploring the town center. Some incident with three swimmers, police, ambulances and a coast guard heli in action near where we were having refreshments at a beach side bar. Lots of wind and kite surfers taking advantage of the strong breeze. Waded the last strech back to the hotel.

Schwarze Brücke
12:19 AM; Eupen, BE

15.9 °C; Partly cloudy
My brother told me I should check out the new pool at Wetzlarbad in the Hill valley, due to open soon. Decided to make this my last run in Eupen. When I got there, I was surprised to find the construction site in pretty rough shape. Indeed, building and pool of the modern was complete, but landscaping and even grading was in very rough shape. I checked in with a couple of workers who were putting in pavers and they insisted that the works were on schedule for a July 1 opening. I will keep track of this remotely. While I understand the need for an update, I regret the demise of the old art deco building with which I had grown up. Since I was down here, I decided to continue towards Schwarze Brücke, which crosses the Hill a little farther upstream. From there, a gentle climb back towards the forest edge and city limits, to descent into the Weser valley. Finished with the steep climb towards the youth hostel and couldn't resist a quick lap on the ash track where I laid the groundwork to my fitness as a member of the LACE track club. Just a lovely way to start out the day.

Rest day after fur consecutive days of running. Walk with my ersatz-dog Letti in a rather relentless rain. Loved the sights of my hometown's industrial past under cloudy skies, though, even though Letti and I got soaked.

Eupen-Membach-Stockem
12:17 AM; Eupen, BE

15.7 °C; Partly cloudy
My default run through the pastures west of time, past the house I grew up in, repeating my daily way to school of twelve years. Just lovely sights and scents and many memories. Held up by a herd of dairy cows making their way back to pasture from the farm, led by the farmer and driven gently by a border collie, who came to check me out.

Hotel Nouvel to Park Güell
12:16 AM; Barcelona, Spain

20.1 °C; Clear
Park Güell was on my bucket list for Barcelona and since we did not have enough time, I made this today's running destination. I thought that today's run would be relatively easy compared to yesterday's climb up to the top of Montjuic. Not so, as I approached my destination, I was confronted by an interminable looking stairway. It did have a working escalator going up along the stairs but I'm too proud to use mechanical means. As I huffed and puffed up the stairs, interrupted by a short section of a steep road, I had the opportunity to contemplate that running up stairs is easier then running up a step-less incline of similar steepness. One I stepped off the last stair thread, I was confronted by a signe that pointed down hill to another entrance, because the one where I arrived was closed due to construction. Oh well, more training effect. The reward was being able to run through Gaudi's beautifully quirky structures and up yet more stairs to reach the very pinnacle of the park. Awesome, albeit somewhat exhausting way to start the day.

Walking Around La Pedrera
2:46 AM; Barcelona, Spain

26.6 °C; Clear
Went to visit Casa Mila aka La Pedrera. I pushed for an early slot but even at 10 AM, the place was full. At least, there were no lines. Very impressive structure, like everything by Gaudi I have seen thus far. Hard to take pictures though, people in the way everywhere. After we were done with our visit, we headed north, to Eglisia Sant Joan, stopping on the way back on Placa del La Vila de Gracia, where we stumbled into a Catalan happening involving Castell, or human pyramid building. We arrived as one was just at its apex, and then two more being built in succession. Ont eh way back, we ate lunch and looked at several other local Art Nouveau houses.

Hotel Nouvel to Playa Barceloneta
11:21 PM; Barcelona, Spain

15.8 °C; Cloudy
Needed an easy day after having two hard hill segments during the previous days. Ran to the beach and waded for about 500 m in the knee to hip-deep water, which felt good and provided a little relief to my sore quads. Returned via La Rambla, which is nice and quiet this early in the day. Will be another travel day, heading for Belgium, to see relatives before returning to the Barcelona area.
