Onion River to Houghton Falls
7:38 AM; Washburn, WI

-8.0 °C; Clear
Fun ski for Roux and me: after yesterday's ski to Pikes Bay, I thought it would be fun to head for Houghton Point. Not as much wind and bright sunshine, but not warm by any measure. In other words perfect conditions for a good skijor. Little Roux kept pulling very well for the entire 16 km, not hard, but kept the tow line nice and tout. Did expect the snow to be perfect but based on yesterday's ski, I wasn't worried. Not disappointed, the only short iffy spot was the area off the mouth of the Sioux. Very little snow cover on the ice made conditions a little hazardous. Made it without falling, though. Encountered only one pressure ridge, running from Houghton Point towards the N end of Long Island. At Houghton Point, I called my friends Rick and Darlene, who live there. Rick stepped onto their balcony and we waved at each other. We turned into the Houghton Falls inlet and then started our way back. Made good time, in spite of the headwind.

Sugarbush-Dog Trail-Telford Skate
2:04 PM; Mt. Ashwabay

-2.8 °C; Clear
Forgot to turn on GPS, cheating myself out of about 4 km of recorded skiing. Oh well ... Good ski, bu snow was deteriorating and i was getting tired. With the extra 4 km, today's skiing and skijoring would have added up to about 35 km. Stopped to help Lynn to grt back into her ski and stopped to pick up some shades, that looked familiar. The ended up being her's. Added some double poling to go on the classic-only trail portions and some deep snow on the ungroomed Telford training loop.

Final test for wunderdog Roux, who was completing his 25 km of skijoring in one day! He did get a litte tired towards the end, but that's quite acceptable.

Onion to Sioux River
7:23 AM; Washburn, WI

-6.4 °C; Partly cloudy
Cold and blustery for the season, 20-30 km/h wind. Not that noticeable on the way out, but on the way back, it was right in my face. Many icefishermen arriving, most with shelters. The early birds set up right in front of our place, where the current from the Onion keeps the water open. Snow swirls and happy dogs, who were looking forward to get back inside.

Pikes Bay Marina Ski
10:15 AM; Washburn, WI

-7.2 °C; Partly cloudy
With the current conditions I just had to get on the lake with my skis, gale-force wind or not. I maximized protection from the lee of the bluffs and the only place I really had to contend with full wind exposure was crossing Pikes Bay. The wind was blowing hard but I was rewarded having fun skiing through the boat slips. It was fun skiing out of Pikes Bay, literally being driven along by the wind. Good workout on pretty decent snow. Had to be a little careful for some glare ice and frozen-in ruts from snow machines and ATVs. In general, coverage and snow depth was excellent.

Quick walk with dogs before long drive to cabin and while waiting for Lynn to come home from work. She called while we were underway and we made it home before she arrived. The drive up was uneventful, mostly. Light snow N of Hayward, but not enough to gum up the works. Nice also, to be driving mostly with daylight but dusk and darkness brought two very close calls with suicidal deer.

Sun-exposed shoveled sidewalks were dry, that's how intense the sun is getting, even on a day when the temp does not get above freezing. In deep shade, it was a different story.Dogs had fun dipping their noses, sometimes there entire heads deep into the snow, and snow was deep at times.

Skijoring Horton Park
5:09 PM; Hamline Midway/Frogtown

-1.2 °C; Snow
Just had to do this. After shoveling sidewalk, I took the dogs down the street to Horton Park to do a few laps. Would have preferred to do this on the neighborhood streets, but they were already too warm and the snow had already melted in places. Eventually, the snow started to stick to my old skis and the dogs were getting a little frisky, preferring to sparr over who was first rather than pulling. Fun fun fun!

Snowy and blustery walk along the usual route. I'd say about 3-4 cm of fresh snow thus far, so right on target. Pretty quiet, probably still the spring break effect.

After-Easter-Feast walk. The last few years, Easter Sundays have been rather mild, which always reminded me of a monologue in Goethe's Faust, "Outside the town gate," which describes people enjoying spring on Easter Sunday, in a snow and ice-free landscape. No such sentiment today. Instead, I noticed icicles mooring cars to the ground. Still, the sun packs a punch and much of the 5 cm we got yesterday had melted on roads, sidewalks and in sun-exposed location. In the shade, however, puddles were still frozen solid. Fortunately, my dogs did not turn into the devil after I got home, as happened to the stray Faust encountered during his walk and whom he took home ... Heard and then saw a red-winged blackbird, Spring can't be that far off.
