Waited for the rain to subside and took my chance under threatening skies. Windy but mild, warm actually. I was amazed that even the high grass had almost dried out, courtesy of the strong wind. Other than that, not much to report. Rabbits were chased, squirrels threatened and the evil Kemp's cow attacked.

Short-sleeve early morning ride in the second half of October. Was wearing gloves and the reflective mesh vest over my tee and felt very comfortable. Typical quiet friday morning commute, as always much less traffic. From afar, I saw that Pierce Butler Rte was already busy with trucks hauling the scraped-off top coat. Looking forward to a smooth riding surface. Made good tempo this AM, no wind always helps!

Quite warm and quite the wind. Took it rather easy, after the past few days exertions. Wind was especially noticeable going S on snelling. I feel I asked this several times: will this be the last time I ride in summer gear?

Walk with Lynn, leisurely. As always, I enjoy having company besiddes the dogs. Last summer walk? There is almost no limping left in Mellie. One or maybe both of the schools in SW Como seem to have invested heavily in sports. Where I saw the soccer field a couple of weeks back, there is now a gigantic bubble hall.

Headed toward Pierce Butler on Holton and could tell that traffic was moving slowly, and that dust was being thrown up. When I got there, I saw the reason for it, the top coat of blacktop had just been removed. I turned back and headed for Snelling and Como. The cool morning was nice, Since I was later than usual, there were many cyclists and runners out.

Pushed it hard on the stretch between TCF Stadium and Snelling. The wind was not favorable but there was a cyclist closing in, I could see him in the mirror. I assumed he would catch me but decided to make him work for it. He almost got me on the transit way climbing the bridge just before getting to Como but I pushed again, powering up the incline. He kept close on Como until I turned S on Snelling. Some consider it poor form to race during the commute. I don't consider this racin, merely being motivated by my fellow cyclists. Consequently, this was a very nice cardio effort, one of my best on a commute to work.

Lovely indian summer afternoon, definitely summer-like temps. Mellie, the selective hypochondriac, decided she could go for a walk after the master came back home. On Monday, my son James called while Lynn and I were on opposite coasts. He had thrown the ball for the dogs in the back yard and Mellie had started limping. The way James had put it, it sounded serious, at the very least a double amputation of the fore legs. Still, I remained optimistic, remembering that mellie had pulled a muscle while playing fetch before. When Lynn got home on Tuesday, mellie greeted her at the door and climbed on the couch to sit next to her. When I got home today, she thundered down the stairs, expecting to be fed. I took her along for the walk, she limped just barely. I modified the walk to go along the grassy boulevard of Pierce Butler, also to check out the progress of road construction. Not a problem, I assume she was healed by the return of master and mistress.

Feeling guilty that I missed this week's "painful" (per Mike B) EU Tuesday night workout, I headed for the hills instead of for the harbor. Last time I was hear was 23 years ago with Lynn and one-year-old Colin, visiting the zoo while Lynn was taking a break from her conference. No regrets, much of the hilly parts were on natural trails rather than on concrete or blacktop. Another day with beautiful morning light. I left the different scents wash over me. Dry-land dust, a strong lemon oil/citronella scent, piss, a skunk, and others. Yesterday it was the smell of ocean and salt lagoons. Just as interesting as the terrain, vegetation or fauna. One unique thing: I was hit in the head by a small tree fruit. Glad it wasn't something bigger. A sign I should buy a lottery ticket?

The DecoBike (similar to our NiceBikes) could have been better, I think I caught a lemon, the big gear kept popping out. I It was a great ride, though the traffic along Harbor Dr. in utter darkness was a little unnerving. Was glad I had programmed the bike into my mobile and even so I missed one turn, at where the bike path branches off S, along I-5. The rest was a piece of cake. Once there was a little brighter, there were quite a few bikes out. Chatted up a nice guy at the Coronado Ferry, riding to work.

Quick walk before a travel day, dogs likely won't get much before Wednesday evening. A slight chill bit no wind made this very beara le with a light fleece and no gloves. Gorgeous morning sky and a little bonus: had Jamie come towards us on his way to work. Chatted for a few and then went our ways. Crossing Energy Park Dr. at the stop sign E of Snelling pretty much every day for the last 2 years, often in heavy traffic and this is the first time someone honked at me. Was well into the street when he did a drag start from his stop sign. Guess he was in a hurry.

Walked with dogs to Dunn Bros for the weekly beans. Brisk morning, gradually clearing after the rainy night. Highlight for the dogs was walking along the tracks from Hamline and Selby to Summit. It was really too short in terms of oo-leash time but they made the most of it.
Sort of a trip down memory lane, too, when we walked up Fry, I ran into my friend Sher, I used to work with her SO Sarah at TR and we carpooled occasionally, when one of us had vehicle issues. We chatted for a while. Then I walked through the alley behind our previous home on Van Buren and a woman whom I recognized as having moved in on the block around the time we moved to our current home commented on the dogs. I introduced myself and got updated on the neighbors. One neighbor, Paul, passed away a couple of years ago. I also took a little detour onto the little stub of Portland between Hamline and Ayd Mill, to check out my friend Jim's house that had been damaged last winter when a vehicle lost control on Hamline and slammed into his house, which happens to be quite a bit above street level a few houses away from Hamline. That car must have been traveling fast to manage to do that ...

Needed a pair of new slacks for my trip, all the nicer pants I have are starting to fray at the edges. Such is life ... Lynn had a few items as well, since both of us are traveling for the first part of the week it wasn't enough to warrant a trip with the car. One of the easiest and least encumbered ride to the busy Hamline-University area during a busy time I recall, no wait for traffic lights. Saw my boss's boss, who is also traveling to San Diego on my way to check out, she was getting a few final items as well.
