Home to Swede Hollow to Trung Nam to Dunn Bros
8:34 AM; Hamline Midway/Como Park

26.3 °C; Clear
Wanted to visit my friends from EU during their workout at Swede Hollow, so I rode over there. Partial trail obstruction from Art in the Hollow art crawl. Good to see the group! From there, I rode to Trung Nam for croissants and Dunn Bros for beans. At Dunn Bros I sat for a while with book group friends Mike and Dave. Dave's son and his girlfriend were sitting with us, too. Had a smoothie (always Mango) from Jamba and my older boy's HS bud Sam was there. He manages all Jamba Juice stores across the Twin Cities. Always upgrades my order, it's good to know people in high places.

UMN Ag Campus Fields
5:56 AM; Hamline Midway/Como Park

23.8 °C; Clear
Early start because of morning plans and to avoid summer heat for dogs. There is a fence between the UMN campus and the fairgrounds with few passages. Took us a while get through. There's a horse event at the fairgrounds, too, Always makes me wonder how I could score some manure for my garden and compost pile. Stopped at the tomato field. At least one row had a variety called Cherokee Purple. Saw Lisa and Lynn just coming back from the farmer's market as we neared home.

Construction project on LRT between US Bank Stadium and Target Stadium. It says maintenance , but they are jack-hammering the rails of their concrete bed, with the big guns, i.e. back hoes with a jackhammer tip. Can't quite imagine how they will finish this by 5 AM Monday morning ...

Quite a bit of intermittent running. Downright hot, but I enjoy it. Not so sure about the dogs.Lots of traffic on Energy Park Drive at Lexington intersection. Just rush hour or some event or a detour? Just glad I'm not sitting in a car. Dogs did have some off leash time between Hamline and Snelling.

Feels like summer! Dogs running around like nuts, scents of flowering shrubs, just lovely. Mowed the lawn and before I was gone, started a fire in the grill with scrp wood from trees and bushes. Put a steak over the hot embers. A cool beer and Joel visiting, Lynn coming home from work.

Smith Fire Lane--McCulloch Loop
8:14 AM; Washburn, WI

14.5 °C; Chance of rain
Went from Onion to Sioux River. Returning to Friendly Valley Beach, from where I was heading up Kjarvick, I encountered a flock of birders, with binoculars, a gigantic spotting scope on a tripod and at least one camera with a big tele lens. I asked if they were looking for anything in particular and they said "Any bird!" Their van was registered in Virginia, not sure if they all came from there. Went down Potter Rd, then entered the woods on the trails heading west. From there back up to Smith Fire Lane, across and onto the logging road, in light rain. Musing about how churned up the heavy logging tractors leave the terrain and how inefficient forestry seems when compared to what I know from Europe. But then, trees are generally not planted in rows, as Lynn noted in horror during one of our first trips together. At the end of the logging area, I followed the ravine back to McCulloch. A nice walk!

McCulloch--Power Line Loop
5:37 AM; Washburn, WI

Cloudy
Mild, compared to the previous mornings and I have a sense that rain is near. But we stayed dry but for the morning dew, stream and swamp crossings. Heard and/or saw turkeys, ravens, deer, pileated woodpeckers. I cut into the woods before I got to Whiting, not wanting to hike down a straight dirt road. We crawled out of the woods right by where Hwy 13 turns onto the long straight along Friendly Valley Beach. I was surprised over how short the distance of today's hike was but about one third of the way gained over 100 m in elevation in very rough off-trail terrain. Still, it was much easier than hiking this stretch in midsummer, when the weeds and brambles are tall and the bugs are biting.

Short hike with Lynn and the dogs. Always a little nervous being tethered to them near sheer cliffs and bluffs. Beautiful as always.
