Second edition, did not take skis off at all, not even along Snelling. Only iffy piece was by Klas Field, where Hamline U had done an extra fine job sweeping the sidewalk along Snelling. A Dogs were good sports! We made many people smile.

Rode with Karl, a dad with daughter in parking lot asking about snow conditions turned out to be Ken, former colleague from West/Thomson Reuters. Had a quick chat with him after lap 1. One guy giving assessment of snow made it sound like it was ungroomed. Must have been groomed very early in the morning, the glacier had 3-4 cm of fresh snow on top. Other areas were starting to be blown over. A brisk northerly wind started to turn west as we were skiing. Skiing went pretty well but much slower than expected. Good workout, does not look likely I'll be able to do anything tomorrow with temps supposed to be around -30 C.

Today, I saw a guy in insulated coveralls, holding a ski bag on the Nicollet Mall platform. I think he just had his picture taken, possibly by his wife, not sure. Anyway, I chatted him up, he is one David B, who lives in my general neighborhood, in my age group, returning from Wirth after a ski. Pretty be dedicated to ride the bus 1 hr 10 min to Wirth and longer back ... Nice to make an acquaintance on the daily train ride.

Highland Skijoring 3 Laps
5:02 PM; Big Rivers Regional Trail, Mendota, MN

-11.3 °C; Snow
The usual, two laps with Roux, then one with Roux and Mellie. Ran into Mark Johnson when I started and another skier seemed to recognize me as Roux and I zipped by. Like Monday night, Roux was a trooper, especially during the first lap. Very fun. One encounter with an off leash dog, hardly a slowdown during our first lap, then a furiously barking dog at a distance while skijorng with both dogs, this was more of a challenge for lil' Roux. I was glad that the owner did a loop so we did not have to pass her. Dogs were very well behaved while passing the other skiers on the trail. There was 3-5 cm fresh snow on the trail, just enough to smooth it out a little but not too much to slow things down. It was snowing throughout. and we were moving! Great snow!

Sisu MYR: 5 x 4:00 L4 Skate Ski Intervals
6:22 PM; Hamline Midway/Como Park

Wow, skiing on snow! Best snow in two years! I was planning to take my Atomic race skate skis, one of which is broken half through, as rock skis. The broken one slipped out of my hand and really broke. Freudian slip, I guess, took my good Atomics instead, a little worried but no regrets. Pavement, dirt and grass was showing in very few spots, easily avoidable. Half an hour warm-up, then 5 x 4:00 and race pace with 2:00 to 3:00 recovery in between. After interval two, I thought my right thumb was falling, no, breaking off. So cold. Gradually, it felt better and by the end I had two warm hands but the cold was creeping into my boots. 20:00 cool-down. Just an awesome workout!

Wow, the best snow in two years! Went after work for a few laps, first two with Roux, then one more with Mellie and Roux. What a trooper Roux was! Pulled hard for his two laps and then some when we were joined by Mellie. During our first lap we passed a guy when I noticed that Roux was pulling towards him. but he passed, still pulling and looking towards the right side of the trail. The guy we had just passed called after us "did you see the buck?" I had not, but Roux had obviously seen something. Interesting to see the different styles of the dogs. Mellie is in her own world, dipping for pieces of snow. Roux is much more into the running, accelerating at times. Great workout for all of us! I used my broken Atomic Race Skate. It worked alright, I just don't know when they will completely break into two pieces.

Energy Park Lexington to Snelling
8:57 AM; Hamline Midway/Frogtown

-7.5 °C; Snow
The conditions were just right, Roads snow covered and not yet plowed, about 5 inches on the ground. Went back and forth in front of our house a couple of times, then took off through the neighborhood. The snow was very ligt and fluffy, occasionally I scraped the pavement. Good thing I was using my rock skis, which are also wider, some old touring skis. Did not need to take off the skis to cross Pierce Butler at Lexington briddge and the tracks. Nor did I heading into the rough. Mellie found something disgusting to eat and wouldn't heed my calls when I and roux were getting to head W along the tracks. Finally she came. Set up a tripod and my cam for som neat pics, skiing along BNSF. Of course I forgot to turn on the GPS watch again after being done fooling around. Double poled pretty much the entire stretch along the tracks to Snelling. Got hooted at by one train (first time ever, hard to hop into the bushes with skis on) and got a thumbs up from a passing dump truck driver heading east with a load of snow. Walked across Energy Park Dr, then again along snelling to about Pascal. Got one last bit of skiing in heading home through the neigborhood. Felt like we were making quite a few people smile this morning.
