Roller Skiing Skate Big Rivers Trail
7:52 AM; Big Rivers Regional Trail, Mendota, MN

15.8 °C; Clear
Beautiful morning for a roller ski, could not invest the time to do the 55 km ski with Endurance United. Karl and I went up Big Rivers Trail to 494 and then to Pickerel Lake downstream from the 35E bridge. On the last piece of way I took a tumble over a stick and hit my head at the very end of our workout. Made it back alright but am definitely a little out of it. Karl and Val (who is a nursing prof at St. Kate's) came to check on me and did the basic concussion checks. Seems to be alright.

Wet roads from night-long rain, but not bad. So lucky this year that most rainfalls were not during commuting time. It started again when I was riding into downtown, but not too bad. Feeling tired, time for a rest day.

Mellie's just along for the ride. Students are back at Hamline and many are smiling at the dogs when we come through.

Warm and sticky. Grass still a little wet from the rain. Happy dogs. A little running, a lot of hiking. School's back in session at Hamline. After a quiet and long weekend, the traffic on Snelling seems extra loud, gald it's just a short stretch.

Sisu MYR: 9 x 2:00 Double Poling at L4
6:34 PM; Battle Creek West, St. Paul

22.5 °C; Light rain
This was supposed to be an 8 x 4:00 workout but because of big puddles on the trail, we did not have enough distance for 4:00. Shortened it to 2:00. Besides with puddles, I was also struggling with one of my poles. The right pole shaft had slipped out of the handle when the tip got stuck in a pavement crack. I failed to re-glue it and the ferrule would make the shaft rotate, making the tip point in the wrong direction. My right pole would slide off the pavement, making it hard to hammer that pole into the asphalt.
Still a good workout.

Testing Jamie's fatty (Salsa Mukluk) on sand. My first time on a tractor style bike. I've tried this with my MTB, not possible. Would not have wanted to do the entire 5 km on lose sand but I could definitely keep going as long as I kept momentum. No problem on the firm, wet sand.

Beautiful post-rain morning hike with dogs. put in some jogging stretches, too, all bare foot. Chatted with a local fly fisherman at the Sioux, Chuck Campbell. He was hoping for some koho.

Onion River-Chequamegon Light-Houghton Point
5:48 AM; Washburn, WI

14.6 °C; Clear
Got going before sunrise because of activities planned later in the morning. Beautiful sunrise, though I had my hands full with half meter swells coming at me in quick succession. My initial plan had been to paddle to the narrowest point of Long Island and return on the other side. I changed my mind in light of increasing swells that would be hitting me from the left. Heading for Houghton Point seemed like a good alternative and it was. As I approached Houghton Point, the swells gradually decreased in size because I cam into the lee of the coast. I rounded the buoy and did the rest of the way back to the Onion in almost calm conditions.

Could not help but restart my Garmin since I had put it in hiking mode for the southbound leg. Said hello to Mr. Porcupine, fortunately with my camera and not with my front wheel. Only the second one I've seen alive, this one in close-up. Awesome!

Started easy with Craig, then hit it. Decent headwind did not facilitate catching up.
