Last leg easy, as always. Especially on this beautiful morning.

Another feels like summer afternoon! Come home from helping Lynn get situated pre-gall blatter removal surgery at Regions. Dogs were fed and tended by James but happy to see me. Windy and warm, dogs working in the field, as it should be! These guys don't even know how lucky they are. What city dog gets to take a walk off leash (OK, it's the same walk every day, but still), chasing rabbits, eating disgusting stuff, drinking from puddles and suffering in the heat nearly every day? I like the new distance harness I bought for Roux at Howling Dog Alaska. Works well.

Another gorgeous morning to ride. Nice to start weaning off the winter duds. Less bulk and faster to get dressed (and undressed). More sweat, but that dries faster, too. Noticing much more bike traffic this morning. That time when everyone wants to get that rusty old bike out. Can't blame them. Noticing lots of rabbit and squirrel carcasses on the roads and even trails in the past few days. Spring fever must be addling their senses and dull their innate caution.

A pleasant walk. Except for disgusting items consumed by Roux, the younger dog: a squirrel tail, with part of the squirrel's spine attached; a rabbit leg, looked pretty fresh and something undefinable yet nasty looking. Windy and warm, hard to believe that I was in -15 C weather just five days ago ...

Coffee bean day to Dunn Bros, Grand Ave. Lovely morning, wearing shorts. Took pedestrian crossing at westbound Greenline stop at Albert & University and crossed Midway Marketplace parking lot. I think that's going to be my new early morning route. New boathouse going up for Minneapolis Boat Club near W River Parkway and Lake Street bridge. Sunrise on Midtown Greenway, bright early morning sun on CLT.

The warmest afternoon yet. Predictably, there were a gazillion people out enjoying this beautiful day. A wee bit of a headwind but not too much of a bother. Amazing how much more traffic there is when leaving just half an hour later than usual.

9 °C felt cool I actually felt and saw a few sleet pellets. Just glad they weren't Texas-size hail stones. As we walked along the bottom of the RR embankment I heard voices from above. Thought they were either hobos or RR workers. Turned out it was the announcer of a softball game taking place at the Hamline U fields across the tracks and Pierce Butler from where we were.

Had an all-hands meeting at Target Center. The usual corporate speak but also Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks. While I'm no fan of Starbucks (I find their insistence on using Americanized Italian names for their oversized coffee drinks grating), I found the stories he told inspirational. After the event I was able to get ahead of the crowds and after a brisk walk to TPC make my get-away. Did not wear my windbreaker, which was just fine, in spite of a little headwind.

Chilly ride to work with a brisk wind from NW. Somehow, I was only able to get rid of the sensation to ride into a headwind when I turned onto Glenwood Ave. Few bicycles out, but some familiar faces. At the same time of the morning, the same people are out ...

Bike ride with lil' Roux, to give him some exercise before the long drive home and to exorcise the Dickens out of him so he tortures poor ol' Mellie not quite as much. Of course he had to chase some deer along the way. I wiped out on an icy spot, nothing hurt but my pride. Tried the beach, but the sand turned out not to be frozen at all. So we took the RR grade and Bayview Park Road for the remaining stretch home.

Exploring Back 40
9:05 AM; Mt. Ashwabay, Bayfield WI

1.9 °C; Partly cloudy
Nice stroll through the "back 40" in the company of Joel and the dogs. I have to say we did not see much of the dogs who were happily exploring in muck and snow. Opened up a trail at the best suited place to cross the rivulet running along the W side of the RR grade. The sub-soil is sandy, quite firm, under only a thin layer of duff. We were wearing waders, could have easily gotten away with wearing just our Wellingtons. There is quite a mess of mature cedar trees felled by the storms. I am looking forward to salvage some of the wood for split rail fencing and a board walk.
