Hyland Skate Skiing
7:32 AM; Hyland Park Reserve

3.3 °C; Clear
Karl and I got to Hyland for a 7:30 start. Great conditions for the first 3-4 laps, then the uphills started to be sugary. More people started to arrive and after putting our 6 laps (minus Boulder Ridge) in, we called it a day. Pretty awesome to have this resource. Only saw Andy from our group, I think the majority are at Pepsi Challenge or in Finland, for the World Loppet event. If the trail survives today's spring tems, I see a chance for another couple of visits to Hyland next week.
For me, a strict non-winter rider, this is the first winter for which skiing and bicycle commuting overlapped, both at the beginning and at the end of the season.

Hike with Lynn and the dogs, spring-like weather, super warm but not good for the remaining snow.

First time on the bike since mid december of last year. Feels good. Almost missed the train, just got there in time to hop on. Parked bike in TCC basement bike room. Very easy. I can't quite believe that this is it for the winter. Who knows, maybe there's going to be a foot in mid-March.

Beatiful afternoon, also for walk with dogs. Track team is training at Hamline field, athletes in shorts, they looked cold.

TCC to Home

First commute ride and it was a lovely one. A little wind from the hindquarters, sunshine and mostly dry pavement. Not too much traffic, either. Kept the pace easy, switching activities and easing back into cycling. Sweet!

Lap Swim DT Minneapolis YMCA
6:22 AM; Downtown Minneapolis YMCA

First swim since last summer. Probably more some sort of water therapy for my sore body at the end of xc ski season. There is a sore shoulder, stemming back from a roller ski spill almost two years ago, and a sore upper hamstring from another roller ski spill a year and a half ago. Sore knees to boot. Time for some healing, now. That meant at best a moderate pace for today's swim, and breast stroke only. It felt good to be in the water, though.

Cold wind from NW, but above freezing and snow is almost gone. Eager dogs.

First time in a while to do the Snelling to Lexington stretch. The dirt next to the tracks was very soft, on top of frozen ground. Roux regaled some smokers outside of the Kemps building by barking at the promotional VW with almost full-sized cow. Always cracks me up, too. Rescued a nice storage crate from a dumpster, too.

Quick walk with the dogs. Ran into Bree and Frankie on way back, Frankie was a little taken aback by Roux's exuberance.

Nice ski with Karl. Sugary mashed potatoes in the uphills but all in all not bad at all. Decent glide, too. A variety of paces, also practicing my V2 in this easy-control snow. Now, if I just could emulate this on very firm snow, I'd be golden.

Energy Park Drive Hike

1.0 °C; Partly cloudy
On this Monday after the Birkie weekend, snow is doing a disappearing act. In exposed, south-facing slopes (like in the green space within the Snelling to Energy Park Drive ramps) the ground is soft. No more trace of frost, here. I am quite certain that winter still has something in store for us but I am thinking we'll have a fairly early spring.

OO to Birkie Ridge Trail
10:28 AM; Birkie Trail

-4.1 °C; Snow
First time the conditions were right for an after-Birkie ski. Enjoyed a freshly groomed trail and running into Chris, Heather, Jeremy, and a Brian Gregg look-alike. Turned out to be his identical twin brother and his mom. Also chatted with a young couple skiers in the parking lot, she was wearing Sisu Skiers race tights and appeared to be an elite skier. Sharmila Ahmed? No, Marit Sonnesyn.
Good thing to do before sitting for a couple of hours in the car ...
