First classic ski of the season, long overdue. I do realize that my classic equipment is getting a little long in the tooth, especially the boots, which feel loose and create friction points. Beautiful trails! I was spoiled by the perfect conditions at Mt. Ashwabay these last couple of days and yesterday afternoon winds dropped a lot of debris onto the tracks. I suppose Mt. Ashwabay may look similar. In spite of the fog I got a good impression of the gorgeous landscape. The dark skies imparted a Nordic flavor befitting the name of the trail system. Some good climbs, too.

Went back to Mt. Ashwabay in the afternoon to ski with Lynn, Liz and Anne. Anne had gotten skate skis for christmas and was eager to try them out. Did some warm-up with Lynn and then the Anchor loop with Anne and Liz. Then I did the Seagull loop, reversed Anchor and then messed up and got onto Jolly, which I had never seen because of a sharp turn that looked more like a classic trail was joining up. I went downhill for a ways and decided to return before I got to the bottom because Liz and Anne were expecting me. Good workout with some high-intensity sections.
Good thing I returned, as I was catching up with them, Anne was on the phone with Lynn who was locked out of the cabin. Fortunately easy to remedy.

Decided to delay the classic session to take advantage of the cold weather wax on my skate skis and the still cool temps. Not disappointed. Much better conditions than yesterday, the trail was skied in and firm, at least on the lower portions. Seagull Trail along the ridge of Mt. Ashwabay, Roller Coaster and the non-shared portions of Anchor Trail were still very soft, because they get much less use. Did two laps of the outside loop and finished up by doing Anchor Trail as a cool-down. What a blast the last 4-5 km on a firm trail were! Skiing this trail system is highly recommended!

Went for a pre-work ski at Mt. Ashwabay. I think the only time I skied there once in 1990, just after I started dating Lynn. We have gone skiing with our friends from Washburn many times in the Cable and Ironwood areas, but never again here. That's about to change since we are now of the landed gentry on Chequamegon Bay's west coast, only minutes away from thes great trails. Did one lap today, a good climb. The trail was in great shape but the base was very soft on top of the hill. Good prepp for Sisu Ski Fest! Planning to do classic tomorrow.

Trying out snow shoes, one of two pairs (tow different models) for the very first time. Worked surprisingly well. The back 40 is a winterwonderland maze of snow covered trees. Main way to orient myself was by the car noise drifting over from Hwy 13. I will have to get back in broad daylight.

Looks like about 10 cm of fresh snow, great Christmas present, just what we need to freshen up thos ski trails. Because I couldn't imagine that anything was groomed yet I went for a jog instead. Made this an easy run, except for some deep snow passages while off trail in Como Park. Amazingly, the bike trails had all been plowed, ahead of the streets! Very nice to be out on this beautiful morning, enjoying the contrast my black dog provided against the immaculate snow.

Met up with John B and Paul T for some over-distance. Light snow almost throughout. Surprised how much snow had accumulated by the time we did our second lap on the eastern portion of the trails, about 1-2 cm. Paul broke a pole, great morning out, mild like not in quite some time.
