We picked up Karl on the way out. Nice to catch up with him. Sounds like he had a few late skis, one while visiting his mom in Bismark, ND. The goats are out Great River School, I like the unexpectedness of seeing a flock of them next to the school building. We did one of my usual routes along tracks, through State Fair lot and around the light industrial building where Midway stadium used to be. Natural snow is mostly gone, but where snow removed from parking lots and roads is piled up it will be quite some time before it's all gone. A lovely walk!

OK, this wasn't the direct way to target, but the afternoon sun felt so nice, I had to stretch it out a little. Used Shopping bag carriers and the Birkie backpack. The latter served to carry a 12-pack of Summit Keller Pils and a 6-pack of New Belgium Trippel. I would have squeezed in some Summit 120 Shilling if they had had it. Not a problem bringing my haul home. I quickly refurbished a broken mirror because the one I was using had a cracked arm.

Baseball game in full swing, did a quick stop on CLT to snap a pic of the spectators heads peeping out from the nosebleed section. Then another escapade down to the service road for the UMN steam plant to check out the high water from there. On oldster was just getting back into his truck with his pooch, we exchanged a few pleasantries and our aw over the river's might. I went to a couple of spots to take pictures, the last one near the gate of the new UMN steam plant. I climbed over a railing onto a viewing platform and noticed a memorial to the student who had been found dead in this location a few years ago. Sad, He was aged between my two boys. On the way back up, I saw the old guy picking up garbage, doing his good deed. On Como, I caught up with my buddy from work, who must have left a little after me. Had not seen him in the locker room today but his bike was still hanging in the bike room. Back home, I was ready to get going with the dogs when Lynn called James and asked if we'd want to go to eat out with Colin. So the pooches went out empty tonight because the fam was eating out. Instead of a workout I ate way too much.

Lovely spring weather and a nice tailwind, except for Downtown and southbound Snelling. Saw my colleague at the bike room who start out in the same direction. I leave a couple minutes before him but he takes a shorter route. Always a question where I catch him. Caught him at the beginning of the campus connector this time in spite of stopping to take a picture of the falls again.

Missed my train by a minute or so and kept riding along University Ave. This route would be great if it wasn't for the many traffic lights which frustrate drivers and cyclists alike. Lovely afternoon. Roux was going berserk in our backyard, because occasional guest golden retriever Dude was next door and those two love barking, snarling at each other and running along the fence. 3/4 on ice, 1/4 on shore. The snow crust bore me easily in most places and the ice was as hard as glass. Relentless wind, 25-35 km/h from NE. The ice did not budge, Madeline must be providing a good seawall. Surprised to see a number of ice fishermen out counted 8 to 10 parties.

Beautiful eastern sky on this cold morning. The hard freeze had solidified the slush on top of the ice, but I managed to break through right off our beach and started the walk with one moist foot. Chatted with one fisherman who had drilled his hole right outside the flume of the Onion. He told me that bait fish are hiding in the muddy water coming from the Onion and that the large fish are looking for them. Then we headed straight for the South Channel, the gap between Madeline and Long Islands. Not to get there, it's 7 km one way, just to have a a direction. Dogs were always far ahead, Mellie not even looking at me, Roux making sure I was still there. After 2 km, we headed for the house where the owner plunged 12 m to her death, it had a frozen waterfall right next to it. Once there, we followed the bluff back to the Onion, taking many pictures. By now, the lake was getting pretty busy with snowmobiles, fourwheelers and walkers heading for their fishing spots. Everyone wants to catch a few fish before the ice breaks up.

Walked on the ice towards Sioux River, as recommended by Mike, with Lynn and dogs. In many places, there was just a thin crust on top of slush. Enough to bear the dogs but not for us. Still much easier going than on shore. Mellie wiped out once on glare ice and was hobbling for a few minutes but recovered. She and Lynn turned back at Friendly Valley Beach because she had a work call. Roux and I made it to the mouth of the Sioux. The Sioux is ice free but the slough is still covered. We made it back before Lynn, who had met Dan, a regular guest at one of our neighbors.

Always an adventure getting used to the biking routine again, many things to forget or miss. Like my gloves. I realized on my way to TPC that I had probably left in the bike shop area, where I had put them aside while lubricating my chain. I looked, another guy had his bike on one of the stands, told him, he commiserated with me. I even went to the security desk in case somebody had handed them in. Back to the bike room, one more look, nothing to see. The guy said "Are those them?" pointing at my gloves which were neatly placed at the bottom of the stand where I had worked on my bike. I looked three times and did not see them.
As expected, the rid home was rather wet, lots of spray from the many melt water puddles and rivulets crossing roads and trails. Not many fellow cyclists out. A slow ride, as they usually are this early in the season.

Close to the same as yesterday. Short no-pole warm-up, five loops to the Boulder Ridge cut-off, of which four with effort, the last one easy. Made it a longer cool-down doing Frogtown, no poles and stopping for some pictures. I don't know if you anticipate snow by the color and light of the clouds. It had that pink-yellowish tint for some time and sure enough, I soon saw some lazy flakes that gradually turned into a nice shower. Another great workout!

Did not see anyone I know, except the four deer that crossed the trail in front of me looked sort of familiar. Polled the classic skiers I saw for their opinion on kick and what they were using, all but one were using skins or fish scales. The one wax skier told me it wasn't working so well. One person at Hamline U told me in passing "Finally a day where it's nice to walk!" And it's true, most of the ice is gone from the sidewalks, even some dry spots are visible. The sun's peeping out from behind some clouds. Did some shoveling, breaking up some of the remaining thick icy spots covering the walk by our driveway. A woman I occasionally greet when we meet during dog walks came by with her pooch. She asked "Where are your dogs?" Indeed, there was no ferocious barking from Roux, he was visiting the neighbor's yard again. Looking forward to some walks on our full Energy Park Route!

Squeezed in a ski before work at Elm Creek. Conditions perfect, as usual. During my third lap on the man-made loop, I noticed a trail branching to the left at the bottom of the donut. Since I only ever ski here when snow conditions require man-made, I never noticed it before. Decided to take it at the end of Lap 4 and had a wonderful time on Northern Lights. This was where I started this winter's ski season in November, I hope it doesn't end here today.

Skate Skiing Como Golf Course

Battle Creek or Como was the question Karl and I had to contemplate, Como won out, because of proximity over fighting traffic while taking I-94. Good choice, very decent conditions. The only slushy spot was the climb right by the club house next to the parking lot. Deep shade was softer, some of the turns were scraped but still held an edge. The fact that they did groom the top of the ski hill was an added bonus, a little bumpy but not bad at all. All this in lovely late afternoon sun. My perceived weakness last Wednesday must have been tied to insufficient nutrition that day. I had a good lunch and felt good throughout.

Nice skate ski with Karl at Phalen. Three laps, first lap was a warm-up without poles. When we started, few skiers were out, when we finished, they wer coming. everyone trying to get that ski in before that slushy storm we are expecting. Foot felt good, so did my V2. I think part of my problem on Wednesday had been insufficient nutrition during the day.

Highland Skijoring Roux 2 Laps

While our outing to Highland at the beginning of the week had been too cold, today's weekend starter turned out to be too warm. Roux was suffering from the heat, +3 °C. Luckily, the skating surface was still excellent. Quite a few people out enjoying some spring skiing. A dad introducing his 5-year old to the sport and some college skiers. Very nice.

Como Golf Course Skate Ski

Joined Karl for a quick ski at Como Golf Course, on the northern-most of the Nazca Lines. First time I did a couple of full laps here in at least two years. Sort of full laps, they cut out the flat area N of the bowl and the flat area on top of the ski hill. Not quite 5 km now, it used to be a little more than 5k before.
Today, I noticed how out of shape I am. Huffing and puffing. The foot is improving, though, I felt it but it does not hurt.

Didn't feel that cold when I got off the train, but the wind chilled me by the time I got home. Put my parka on top of my fleece and switched to a warm pair of gloves before giving the dogs their due. Still not as cold as it was, the road salt is creating slush again and Roux's paws are smarting in consequence.

The usual shuffle and cold. Started climbing some floors again at work, not the full 12 floors yet but enough to get my 10 floors down by the time I sit down at my desk. No hike home from the Green Line today because I got off at the Fairview station to pick up the van my son was using to drive himself to work at Menards. The end of that train ride got kind of exciting, there was a fight at the opposite end of the car from where I was sitting. I sat in the last car because I wanted to be closer to Menards. When the doors opened, I ran to the front to let the conductor know. He said the cops were on the way. I don't like that stuff ...

Light snow, a decent wind and -14 °C. Tracks from my first lap were mostly blown over during my second. Roux was a trooper, especially during lap 1. There were a couple of cars there that had left by the time we finished the first lap and a couple of newcomers when we were leaving. We got a short but decent workout with HR well into the 160s. It's hard not to go hard when you're skiing with a dog who likes to pull hard :-)

The way back was kind of a cluster. Forgot to push the start button on the Garmin and then my team barreled me towards an incoming husky. I tried to divert through deep snow but the snow was too deep. After the dogs had said hi and I was back on my skis, I noticed I broke one of my Yoko orange sticks was now two sticks. The parking lot was now closed to incoming vehicles but there were still plenty of cars moving around, either trying to find a non-existing spot or trying to get out. I finally managed to extricate my self and talking the cop into letting me out. He said "They're parking like idiots."

6-8 cm of fresh snow. Hiked home and saw a guy go down on an icy spot at Minnehaha and Simpson. I was glad he pointed out the slick spot for me and he was glad that I saw him go down because I found his keys where he fell. I yelled after him and delivered the keys. Dogs collected some snow on their backs during our walk but were not phased. Quickly shoveled some key spots before letting dogs into the house and then ran the snowblower to finish off my chore.
