Should have gone skiing but did not feel like driving across town in this weather. Nice walk,. though, in spite of the icy sidewalks and ice-covered off-road stretches. Almost went down one time. Just wish we would get more snow.

Lovely morning in spite of the grey sky. Sa neighbor Mike and dog Olne sitting at the beach. Hadn't noticed them until he talked to me, I was enjoying the sights of the lake and lost in thoughts. Later, I learned the hard way that the waves had glazed over the beach, fell flat on my back while trying to get in position to take a photo, luckily distributing the impact. Did not hit my head either, though this could have easily happened. On the way back, I was even more cautious than usual. We crossed the wetland again and came back on the RR grade and Bayview Park Rd.

Nice morning, cold, a few snowflakes but no wind. The ice wall along the shore was gone, as was most of the pack ice. Instead, there were some ice formations that looked like boulders. A few ice floes, too. We cut across the wetland to hike on the RR grade, which we followed till we reached the Sioux slough. The dogs ventured out onto the ice, I was concerned that it was still too thin. Sure enough, I was able to break through with only minimal pressure when I tested it, my other foot on terra firma. Luckily, the dogs did not break through and I did not have to mount a rescue. We hiked back along the beach, enjoying this lovely winter morning.

Program today included hill intervals. Had hoped to do Jolly Long as a warm-up, but when I get to the trail, it had only been rolled once. So I went up Anchor to the instead and tried the cut-off for the first time. Then, the six reps going up roller coaster, gaining about 30 m over 400 m. Hard but feasible. I have done them before, they certainly seem easier now, must mean I learned something. Finished up with another loop on Anchor and on Telford. Excellent workout!

Quick skijor with Roux, towards the end of the day. He does well, steady. But he doesn't have quite the same enthusiasm Mellie had. Seemed like most people were going home. Encountered the two women I saw yesterday and two solo skiers. The skating surface was a little churned up, by skiers rather than dogs. I think they did not roll it as vigorously as the people-only trails. Beautiful evening, with glimpses of blue sky. The SW horizon was spectacular during the drive home.

Groomer had passed once on Sugarbush and Seagull, the Atomics were a good choice for today. When I got to the starting gate on top of Mt. Ashwabay, I saw why the couple of skiers had come back the same way they had gone up: Swiss Miss had not been rolled yet. Knowing what I had seen on the way up, i.e. the upper portion of Anchor without any grooming, I decided to do what everyone else had done: coming back in my tracks, doing Seagull in reverse. The deep snow made it easy to not gain too much speed in the steepest portions of Seagull. Wildlif sightings were restricted to a shrew on the way up and a vole on the way down.

Couldn't spend this entire rainy day cooped up inside the house. As soon as it looked like there was more snow than rain coming down, the dogs and I were out. The snow was sloppy and a decent NE wind was driving it from our left. Quite a change from yesterday's shorter walk, when the wind had been from the west, ice shards and small floes were driven near the beach and pack was forming. Where little peninsulas had formed, I gave it a careful try, nothing strong enough to fully support me. Dogs were happy to move about. Some people had been out before us but nobody had gone all the way to the Sioux, where the slough was fully ice covered but the main channel was open. On the way back, I noticed some fresh boot prints and then saw the owners a long way ahead. As we were closing in, I noticed that they had a couple of dogs, The closer we came, the more I had to work on Roux to keep him with me. We got home just as they made it back to the parking area by the Onion. All three of us were sopping wet and my parka had just started to freeze in places.

Out to switch SD card and batteries in trail cam. Made a walk of it. The dogs had a little too much excitement, absconded at different times to follow some scent. Nice workout at Mt. Ashwabay. Skied pretty much all trails groomed for skate skiing, Telford, Anchor, Seagull, Rollercoaster uphill, Sugarbush Road dog trail and even double-poled (mostly downhill) a portion of the Sugarbush classic only trail. The one trail I did not include was Jolly Long. Excellent coverage in most places, very firm with a couple cm of fluff on top. So glad I switched to my Fischers, the Atomic ar great in soft snow but not on the firm stuff.

This was supposed to be an easy workout, turned out into an L3 test. I was good at holding back but the hills on this course make it hard to pace oneself and near impossible to keep the heart rate in L1 territory. A great workout, though, I was focusing on V2, which is finally coming close to where it should be. The other thing I focused on were fast sharp downhill turns. I noticed that I have a tendency to Push with my outside ski without lifting the inside ski at all. I focused on lifting the inside ski to point it where I am going and then pushing with the outside ski. Legs got tired but no sign of cramping. Very nice ski!

Not the best walk, not because of the weather, which was blustery and snowy, thus excellent. Roux had filched two sticks of butter from the countertop and as I expected. was dealing with loose stool. The first one was a portion of it served on a firm turd, so I could actually coax it into a doggy bag. I disposed of it in a garbage can on Hamline U campus, which have, as you may know, spring loaded lids, to keep the racoons and squirrels out. We keep going and there is an icicle forming on the tip of my nose. I do what I always do, wipe it of with the back of my glove, which has some sort of a built in snot-clearing surface. But oh the horror, unnoticed by me, I had deposited a smidgen of doggy do on said glove which landed in my face, and worse yet, in my mouth. No surprise that I was spitting for most of the remainder of the walk.

Six laps for 26 km at Highland. the van was not at home this AM, called Lynn around 9:00 to see if she needed her car, which I had borrowed. No need to return, I would have made it seven laps for 30 km but Karl had been stopped without his pass and shooed off the course. Like me, he has it on his fanny pack, which he forgot at home. Happens to me, too, when I'm not driving.
Saw Andy, Bruce, Dan (just as we were leaving) and skied a little with Mo. Later saw it was her BD. Happy birthday, Mo!
Great workout, much better than the EU session last Tuesday! Glide was right on, kick could have been a little better but was adequate.

Pleasant to walk and especially come back into the house without muddy paws. The snow is gone, but at least the mud is too. A school class from Great Rivers came down the pedestrian ramp at Hamline. A little straggler with the teacher doing sweeper duty was worried about the dogs. We gave them wide berth, as we were past them, he thought he might want to pet the dogs but change his mind. Caught up with some middle school boys on their way home from school, they were chatting animatedly. Reminded me walking stretches with one of my buddies.

When I took the dogs out, it appeared that the predicted rain had been minimal. Decision was made to ride the bike, however, when I stepped our around 6:20, drizzle had started. The road wasn't too wet yet but precip was strong enough to make it hard to see through my goggles. Pretty decent westerly made me opt for the route via Nicollet Mall. Gray, drab and thoroughly unwinterlike. Avoiding melt puddles instead of slick spots. Saw colleague in locker room, he takes the shorter route and I take the scenic route, about 2 km longer. He said "See you down the road." I did not believe him even though I catch him typically during the summer months. But the roads were such that I was able to pedal hard and go at a decent pace and caught up with him at where the Campus Connector crosses Como Ave. Another observation: the boardwalk across from Mill City Museum is open again, looks like they fixed another 20 m or so. I wonder why they don't just fix the entire stretch at once. Is it that expensive to have to stretch it over several years?

EU MYR: Classic Intervals 4 x 8:00 L3 and 6 x Sprints. The worst ski since I didn't brush the glide wax out on my skate skis a few years back. It was either no kick, where the tracks where glazed or no glide where the snow was softer. But it was still a good workout, based on my HR. I guess that after having had a series of excellent fast ski workouts in near perfect conditions, it is good to get a reminder of not having it that way all the time. I was convinced I had only done 3 of the four intervals but Mo, who I had skied with insisted there were 4. I had skied 3.

Good workout at Hyland with Karl. Quiet when we started, super busy by the time we left. Saw Bruce, Kitty, Mo, Eric, Jamie and Anatoly. Just a lovely morning, but when we were driving home, the temp was above freezing. Whatever we have in terms of snow will take a hit in the next few days. broke the strap on my camera when I pulled it out to take a pic. I fiddled to attache the strap to my bag. During one of the following laps, I thought to myself, "That looks familiar" when I saw something black lying in the snow. it was my Garmin Tempe sensor that had slipped off the strap and fallen into the snow ...

Mild walk, no hat and only light gloves. Saw my distant neighbor Lisa walking her dog. she lives with her twin sister Lynn and I'm embarrassed I can't keep them apart. Told her as much and she said "I'm the one always walking the dog." I asked "what about in your backyard?" She said "forget it." I guess I'll keep being embarrassed.

No logging a fast walk to and from Green Line, today. Worked from home in the morning and participated in the Target law departments volunteer event at Sabathani Community Center, serving a holiday luncheon to the elderly of the surrounding community. Like last year a fun event. I ended up being roped in as a photographer; it was very fun to interact with the participant and catch up with colleagues I only see at this event.
Today I used udder balm again on Roux's paws, he ran happily over heavily treated pavement without stopping to lick or lift his feet. I'll have to wait to do the same in colder temps to come to a final judgment.

An eventful morning. First, Mellie decided to go AWOL during our walk around the premises. After feeding, we always leave the yard through the gate by the garage and walk the sidewalk around our corner lot to the front gate. Roux is generally ahead to the gate because of his thinner coat, making him want to get back in the house. Mellie, on the other hand, likes to sniff things out and lags behind. She almost always lets herself back into the yard by pushing through the spring-loaded gate but not this morning. After 5 minutes, I went to check and of course she was gone. Over the next 45 minutes, I went out a few times to check, call and whistle for her, not a chance. I decided to make the rounds in conjunction with heading for the train, starting with the dead-end alley between Holton and Pascal, a favorite with many trash bins. I hadn't even gotten to the alley when I saw her and she happily came to me. I just hope that she did not indulge in an inordinate amount of garbage. On the train, there was a guy who was jogging back and forth, nonstop from one end of the carriage to the other. It wasn't bothering me, not at all annoying like someone playing music loud or talking on the phone at high volume. But one guy was annoyed and called called it in, I felt an overreaction. The ironic part was that the guy left the train with the complainer at the Government Center station.

Finally reunited with Tuesday Metro East group at Hyland. All those young guy are putting me in my place. While I think I ski as well as I ever have, I can not keep up with them.
Frogtown is open now. First interval was from Jan's Place to the top of Frogtown loop, four times. Followed by four times just the Frogtown loop. My V2 is coming along and is sustainable from a cardio perspective. But my upper body is not strong enough. I guess I have to hit the gym occasionally. Another issue I have been noticing is some minor cramping in my calves. Awesome workout.

But booties or rather socks on Roux to protect his paws from salted sidewalks. The same type they use for sled dog marathons like the Iditarod. Hilarious, how he traipses around, not quite know what to make of those things on his feet. He does not like them but the salt is quite painful on his paws. He very quickly lost three of the four socks when he got off leash, I closely studied the one remaining one to see what I did right.

Left at 6:30 again to beat the crowds, Nordic Opener at Elm Creek. Busy, vendors setting up shops to woo the masses. First time classic for me, worked well, kept up a decent tempo for a total of 12 laps and about 30 km. The new boots are a little loose. Will try to tighten the strap a little more and maybe wear a thicker sock. Towards the end, traffic got thicker, with novices wiping out all over the place. Time to take off. After dropping off Karl, I put up the outdoor Xmas lights. Busy day.

OK, it was 7:50, close enough, but solid L4. For recovery, we did the flat area including the training field. Starting to be able to maintain V2 in hills longer than before.
