shoes: Barefoot

Onion to Sioux River
6:56 AM; Washburn, WI

18.4 °C; Cloudy
Waited out rain, thunder and lightning before starting the walk. Temps were surprisingly mild. We were the only ones along the beach.

Sailing 46:58 [1] 6.07 km (7:44 / km)

Onion to Sioux River
9:54 AM; Washburn, WI

18.6 °C; Cloudy
Had my eye on a log piling I had noticed earlier this week. During walk with dogs, I prepared it for pickup. There was a family of four camped out near the log, Two little boys were totally into the boat, but I did not linger. Splashy ride out and quiet ride back with a tailwind.
12 PM

Swimming Open Water 8:25 [1] 0.21 km (40:05 / km)

Bayview Park Snorkel
12:30 PM; Washburn, WI

22.0 °C; Partly cloudy
Cooling off after some work along the beach. Always looking what's going on under the surface, unfortunately, the water was very opaque roday, lots of silt from the Onion and sand stirred up by the surf. Water temp being close to 20 °C, it was easy to stay in 10 minutes. Would have stayed in longer if the visibility had been better. This is the week with the most consistently mild water temps since we had our place.

Onion to Sioux River

13.8 °C; Clear
Took us a little longer to complete our morning hike today. Carried the big lens, my 150-600 mm, which is a beast to carry. I am still learning all the settings, at one point the auto focus stopped working. turned out that instead of undoing the zoom lock, I must have switched the range button to closeup, which prevented focusing afar. Took me a while to figure that out but I took a bunch of good photos with the unusual perspective of a long lens. Met a guy with a young GSP, of course his dog and my Roux immediately hit it off. Unlike Roux, his dog did not listen when playtime was over. Always rewarding when my "wild" dog listens. Good old Mel doesn't listen that well any longer, I think for her, it's a case of age related deafness.

Sailing 1:01:50 [1] 7.49 km (8:15 / km)

Friendly Valley Beach Sailing
3:30 PM; Washburn, WI

20.9 °C; Clear
Perfect conditions, warm air and water temps, moderate wind from te east and not too wavy made for a fast sail. Leg one, along the cliffs going NE, was the slowest, using mostly the pedal drive. Leg three was the fastest. Used the pedal drive throughout, I figure that the fins do not only provide some extra speed but also directional stability as an accessory center board. Went for a quick swim after we got back. I used flippers, mask and snorkel and Lynn told me after I got back that Mellie swam out looking for me.

Onion to Sioux River
6:13 AM; Washburn, WI

12.5 °C; Chance of rain
Another morning, another walk to the Sioux. Every time, we finish in a comfortable 1:09 hr time and every time we've met the woman with the Australian sheep dog. Today, she told me she switches between different locations, like Valhalla, Friendly Valley and Houghton Falls. Spectacular clouds this morning and a slight drizzle towards the end of the hike. My bare feet noticed the difference in temperature between where the warmer lake water constantly soaked the sand and higher up, where the water had cooled off after sitting for a while.

Onion River-Long Island-Madeline Island
10:20 AM; Washburn, WI

14.8 °C; Cloudy
Meant to carry across at a narrow point of Long Island but found the surf too violent to land without risking damage to the kayak, even on a sand beach. So I turned around, enjoyed surfing the gentle swells and headed back via detours to Madeline and to a signal buoy. Picked up tempo on way home, because I tried to paddle harder, but also because I was experimenting with the tailwind and the following seas. Nice outing, nice L1 cardio workout and a good sustained specific strength workout for my arms, shoulders and core.

Onion to Sioux River
6:25 AM; Washburn, WI

15.4 °C; Cloudy
Big change from yesterday, much cooler and surf. Low clouds. Also, the rain runoff had changed both the Onion and Sioux inlets, most remarkably the latter. The sandbank reaching across is reduced to a thin strip. Roux had fun terrorizing the seagulls parked there. Both dogs greeted the Australian sheep dog again while I said hi to the owner.
11 AM

Sailing 27:52 [1] 3.9 km (7:09 / km)

Friendly Valley Beach Sailing
11:09 AM; Washburn, WI

13.9 °C; Cloudy
Had to head out into wind and waves. Wind direction is always a consideration since our Hobie tub does have a pretty wide no-go zone and doesn't do so well closely hauled, resulting in endless tacking, which is kind of iffy in strong wind and waves. Made it to Friendly Valley Beach access and decided I better check how well I could return with the wind from NE. Not as easy as getting away, but still well enough. The entire outing was exhilarating, some of the steeper waves were a little scary, tilting the Hobie sideways at what seemed like precarious angles, but it always recovered nicely. Being suited up for this outing was essential, I would have been drenched in just a couple minutes and even though the water temp was still around 18 C, the air temp was cool.

Onion to Sioux River
6:05 AM; Washburn, WI

21.6 °C; Partly cloudy
Temp at the cabin showed 18 °C air temp, but at the lake, it felt much warmer. Took the water temp in the Onion, the near constant 12.5 °C. In the lake, making sure that I was far enough away from the river, it was 18 °C. Likewise, when I measured the temp of the Sioux River, it was just a tad below 18 °C. There was a big cloud parked between me and the rising sun, but when we got to the Sioux, the sun emerged. On the way back, I noticed a car at the Friendly Valley beach access that hadn't been there before. A little farther N along the beach, someone had left their shoes and a dog leash. Sure enough, halfway back to Bayview Park, we encountered dog and owner, an Australian sheep dog. Mellie and Roux were elated to make the dog's acquaintance. At Bayview Park Beach, there was a guy enjoying the rising sun and a young woman was walking out with her beagle. On my return, I prepared some syrup for the humming bird feeder and a bread for baking.

A different commute: compliance team is getting a tour of the Shoreview Target store. How do I get there? By bike. It's like a trip down memory lane, past the Roseville passport office, where I we renewed our passports quite a few times, and past Lake Josephine, where we went to swim more often than to the passport office. Much more often. Cool enough, and I was certainly trying to keep my speed in check but somehow I cannot avoid breaking a sweat ...

Big lunch with team after store visit, then a ride home with a pretty decent headwind, which made it sort of sluggish. But at least, I did not have to worry about getting sweaty. Took a slight detour to avoid the Falcon Heights Lexington-Larpenteur intersection area. Lots of traffic in the park, could not quite tell if this was state fair visitors parking here or folks actually visiting Como Park attractions.

A rare cool-weather ride, this morning. The lowest temps in three months but still quite comfortable and not cool enough not to work up a decent sweat. I donned my reflective vest and fingerless gloves, which was quite adequate. Took it easy this morning, yesterday's EU workout was a good one and I need the recovery. I could feel my legs during some of the pickups during this ride. Also, took my southern route to avoid State Fair traffic. This will be it for the remainder of the month of August.

After a decent warm-up, some technical drills, including lock & load and short V2, followed by three pick-up sprints. Then we were ready (or too exhausted) for the attraction of the evening: 3 x 10:00 skate skiing at L3. Make that L3-L4. I like these longer intervals so much better, they seem harder while doing them but there are fewer of them. I also felt like I was doing much better than when we did them a few weeks prior. But I guess that's hard to compare, it was 3 x double pole at L3 and the temps were 27 C ... Interval 1 and 2 were close, but I fell off on number three, about 200 m shorter for the last one. Very impressed with Alan, who kept up the pace throughout. Rounded it out with a nice cool down back to B Vento Nature Sanctuary and some V2 practice on the way back to the Vertical Endeavors parking lot.

Swede Hollow Classic Roller Ski Hill Intervals. Karl gave some options via email but I could not reach him this morning. So I rode to Swede Hollow. I must have missed a message because nobody was there. I decided on 6 hill climbs along Commercial Street. During my warm-up, I checked out the Swede Hollow loop, hoping that the long drought would have taken care of the constant water and mud on part of the trail. Not so, still a a stretch of standing water. So I headed back on the way I came in and continued to Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary from where I did my climbs. Good workout, averaging about 3:00 for each climb at L3. On the way back up, I did no pole striding for my cooldown. Great workout!

Unplanned paddle with Lynn, using a Mississippi River Paddle Share tandem. Pretty easy to reserve online, we got the last watercraft available. We got there a little early, so we walked across the dam and took in the views. People were already unlocking their rental when we got back, we were maybe the third party out. Amazing, how the river changes from just a little distance downstream, where it is dredged for barge traffic, Where we were, it was so shallow that we were scraping the bottom quite a few times. Scenery was varied, broken up by islands, wide stretches with hardly any current and narrow or shallow stretches with some riffles. We only saw two motor boats, only one with the motor on. Landed at the southern area of the Northern Mississippi Regional Park, where we returned the kayak to its assigned locker. James picked us up and we had dinner and cocktails at Psycho Suzi's followed by a tour of Colin's studio, which is just next door.

Carbon copy of yesterday morning, red sun rising, veiled by clouds and smoke. Odd, minor defect on the bike: when I got to the intersection from the Snelling off ramp and Como, I slowed to a stop to let a waiting car cross the intersection on Como. He insisted I keep riding. I had forgotten to downshift and stepped heavily into my pedals to avoid making him wait too long and felt something give, followed by a loud clanking coming from my rear wheel. I was first afraid that one of the spokes had popped but it was my wheel having been pulled out of alignment and the magnet for the speed/cadence sensor clanking against the receiver unit. I do adjust the cam so I have to use both hands to tighten it, amazed that I was able to pull that hard. As for the driver: I appreciate the thought but I think that motorist should take their right of way when a cyclist is approaching. It teaches bad habits among cyclists.

My earlier hope for rain evaporated in fornt of my eyes, the dark clouds dissolving east and south. Dogs are very good generally not pestering people. A woman was sitting on the curb by State of Minnesota Mediation Services, waiting for her ride. Dogs had been running ahead, right past her. I apologized, she said she had been a little concerned but appreciated their good behavior. Unfortunately, the dogs seem to pay attention to people who are fearful ...

I was taking it pretty easy. While crossing W River Rd at CLT, I pulled my rear wheel again, taking me down a notch or two after I was buoyed this morning for having such powerful legs. I should have tightened the cam bolt a turn because it happened again while crossing River Rd a second time. I did and the rest went without a hitch, though I do think I need to measure the chain links, it may be time for a new one. Always something ...

Somewhat of a headwind most of the way. A young woman passed me on Dinkytown Greenway, her legs moving at a masher pace. She said something to me in passing which might have been just have a pleasantry but could have been a taunt, too. My legs still tired from yesterday's decent workout. I let her go, keeping up my heading in the wind pace. Passed her near the top of the Greenway, she was ahead of me again because she took the shortcut. Finally, still not changing my pace, I left her behind on the campus connector.

Yay, I did it: a leisurely ride to work! Kept my speed low, trying not to push when closing in on a cyclist ahead of me and downshifting when going uphill. I wondered about the effect on my cadence, it was only a few RPMs lower than normal, 87 instead of 89 to 90. I have to admit that light bike traffic on Friday mornings helps. In addition, the morning air felt comfortably cool today though it offered some noticeable resistance. Must have been a very slight headwind, I couldn't even tell from looking at the leaves of the trees along my route.

Most times, they go at a reasonable pace but occasionally, somebody comes zipping by on a bike trail at 40 km/h or so. During our roller ski workout on Tuesday, a kid on an e scooter tried to pass me and Jamie by riding between the two of us without a heads-up. We only heard him when he had to slow down hard because there wasn't enough room to sneak through. Mark, who was skiing a little behind us and had witnessed the whole thing said "he's not long for this world."

Had a young guy pass me shortly after getting on the Greenway. Did let him go and kept my pace exactly the same, catching up with him a couple km later. As many times, riders do need to show that they are faster but then dial down when they feel that they have put a safe distance between them and the one they passed. I would have stayed behind him but he was about 2 km/h slower than my pace. He stuck with me but he did not challenge me again until we split at the intersection with CLT. Decided to paddle to meet friends at Point to La Pointe finish in spite of poor weather forecast. It rained pretty much up until I left. As usual, running behind. Bonked my head on low shed door frame. As this happens, I find that I understand why humans have kept hair on their heads. As my bald-patedness progresses, my active lifestyle continues to bring the denuded portions of my scalp in frequent contact with pointy, edgy, hard and otherwise unforgiving objects, resulting in knicks, scratches, abrasions and cuts, all of which seem to draw blood. I don't recall this from during the time when I was sporting a mop of hair. The trip to La Pointe was uneventful. I kept up a steady strong paddle to avoid being way to late. Waves increased in size as I approached my destination. There seemed also to be a periodicity of about three larger waves ever 20 or so waves. Close to the La Pointe Harbor, these waves reflected by the sea wall created turmoil on the water, not so bad that I couldn't deal with it.
On the way back, I started in rain, paddling into the waves, which is always more comfortable than following seas. The few waves that rolled over deck were easily deflected by my spray skirt. The waves gradually declined as I approached home. Overall, the waves came from due south while the wind was blowing not too hard from the SW. I took a refreshing bath in the lake (19 °C) after I got back.

Cool morning, the coolest in many weeks, probably since I experienced some in Spain and Belgium in May. Dogs were accordingly energized and wanted to go. Put in quite a few running steps to help them out. Needed to get this walk in before the long drive to Washburn this afternoon.

Tunder and lightning downtown, good thing I opted for rail this AM.

A always, the wind was swirling wherever there were buildings. It's only on the transitway N of Energy Park Drive that I can clearly tell from where it's blowing. NNW or some such, made the ride S on Snelling swift and easy.

Cool but dry. The usual short walk. The rabbits are thick on Hamline U campus, so thick that Roux doesn't know where to point. Kept the pace up a little.
