Thought I was all done with a full winter walk. Not so, we got about 5 cm last night and the matching temps to boot. The walk was very enjoyable, though mostly on pristine and soft snow. But dogs enjoyed probing the fresh snow with their noses, sort of like a plover does with his beak in the sand. They had started plowing the lots at the various Energy Park facilities. Where they hadn't put deicer down, It had already frozen over.

First full ride to work. A full moon and below freezing. Based on yesterday's ride home, I expected minimal ice along the way, including the stretch I had not ridden thus far. All in all, there were five or six very narrow bands of ice that crossed the trails, three at the bottom of Dinkytown Greenway, one at Bluff Street Bikeway and 13th Av, one at the bottom of the hill under the Guthrie and one on CLT, by the 2nd St. N exit. There were a few frozen spots in the gutter along the DT section, but nothing to be concerned about, all in all a lovely ride. Saw only one single fellow rider, attributing this to good Friday and spring break for many. Stuff going on at the TPC courtyard, they reconfigured access due to construction. I couldn't figure out how to operate the last remaining gate and entered from the front door. I chatted with a cyclist who arrived after I was done with my shower. He confirmed that I just had to pull the gate hard.

No more snow flakes in the air and the tailwind was appreciated. Completed my first full ride to work and home beautifully. They were taking out some props at TPC through the only remaining gate, blocking it for my exit. Seemed like slow going. Had noticed that the large delivery gate was open, going through a construction site and decided to make a go for it. In the meantime, one of the workers had noticed me and was yelling they'd make room for me leaving via the proper way but i was too far gone by that time and had no trouble going the unofficial way. Also took Pierce Butler from Snelling for the first time, since it looked dry from the vantage point of the bridge. However, there was a deep puddle going right into the middle of the car lane at the bottom of the ramp. Made it with some minor splashes. Also feeling like those cycling legs are almost back. Am feeling a little twang on the outside of my left hip. Kind of remember that from last year and will keep an eye on this.

Cold and a stiff wind, that seemed to always blow in my face. Not surprised to see some spots where water was running across the trail still frozen up. They were few and far between, in deep shade. Other than that, the trail was much dryer, courtesy of the cooler temps slowing down the melt and the wind.

Train took off as I rolled onto the Hamline platform. Decided to ride a few stations W, along University Ave. As I progressed, I kept checking my distance from the next train at each station, about 9' ahead until Eastbank Station, where it was 8'. Lost quite a bit of time negotiating the UMN Westbank trail maze and decided to go for the next train. I was still 4' ahead when I got to the platform.

The rain stopped by the time I came home, rather pleasant, cool but not cold. We made it to Lexington today. The melting snow piles still hold a lot of appeal for the dogs and it's hard to especially wrest Mellie from exploring every interesting smell that's thawing out.

A truly lovely early evening. Hard to believe after this dreary start of the day, lasting till halfway through the afternoon. The snow is close to being gone where there is full sun exposure and no drifting or piles from plowing. When we started, one of my neighbors, who has a daycare center, came by with her charges, about 5 3-year olds. One was very curious about Mellie and Roux, wanted to know their names and fearlessly crossed under their leashes several times.

It was raining when we took off, kind of low-grade but steady. Thought we'd to the campus route to be done faster but as we crossed Hamline U I decided it really wasn't raining hard enough to forego the fun part of the walk. Of course, the rain increased in intensity as soon as there was no turning back. So what? The losers were the pooches, who had to do time in the mudroom, to dry off a little.

Lovely morning, moved from cold and windy with high clouds to mild and sunny. Had the drone along to play and learn along the way. Three stops, at Energy Park Metro State parking, then by the old Midway Stadium site and lastly, overlooking a wetland where the abandoned RR spur ends. I think Roux is getting used to the device, does not quite as worried any longer. The little Mavic did not disappoint, held position steadily. It did have some trouble with compass and GPS calibration at the last location, I tend to ascribe this to the two trains passing and us literally starting on top of the old rails. Meant to have one more stop on the State Fair lot south of the grounds. It has been the dumping grounds for removed snow, so it was either dirty snow mounds or mud. We didn't like either, so we kept going. Retrieved a steel wheel chock from a snow pile and used it for some shoulder strength exercises on the way home.

During today's hike, we were joined by Karl and Nova. First time on this route since before we had snow. Roux and Nova hit it off very quickly and started chasing each other on the off-leash stretches. During the on-leash times, they were well behaved, trotting alongside each other. Karle and I only had snow coming over the top of our hiking boots a very few times, along the abandoned track and then on in a shady part of the ag fields. There was a raw easterly wind blowing, most noticeable when we were walking into it.

Getting a little more comfortable with the balance poses, also used a little heavier weights. It's a very good workout, covering stretches and strength. I especially feel my glutes later in the day, it's also good follow-up strengthening and flexibility for my shoulder. The light is muted so I did not notice that a guy from work whom I regularily see in the bike room was attending the class.

Took it easy on the way home on this first commute. My right knee was feeling a little sore, did not want to stress it. There was somewhat of a headwind, too. Roads and trails were mostly dry, some stretches were covered with melt water and the lower portion of Dinkytown Greenway still had a layer of rotting ice. The sun was out, occasionally. Opted for campus connector all the way to Como because I surmised that because of its shady situation, Pierce Butler Route would be very wet with meltwater. This turned out to be a correct assumption based on what I saw when I crossed Pierce Butler via the Snelling Ave bridge.

Mission today was to practice with the drone. Hoped to figure out how to use the ActiveTrack mode, which follows a designated moving target. It took me a while to figure this out but I got it. The little device is pretty much foolproof in terms of making user errors next to impossible. but there are so many features. Next time, I will be more comfortable. Was joined by my friend Joel at the park. Dogs were not so happy because they were tied to a tree. Roux is a little scared of the drone and Mellie wants to just sniff around for edibles. But they got enough off leash time on the way there and on the way back home. Roux nicked on of his paws and is bleeding all over the house now, after he removed the bootie I put on.

Karl joined dogs and me for our walk. Nice to catch up with him. Snow is melting away. Dogs had fun climbing up the snow mountains piled up by the plows off the main parking lot. Of cours, main purpose of the climbing was not "because they were there" but rather because of what they contained: many a tasty morsel long ago burried and the ground up by heavy machinery.

Bear Wallow Canyon Trail Run

Up to Cow Pie trail and back. Started this activity thinking I'd be mostly hiking to give my tired legs a rest. Walked the paved stretch of Schnebly Hill Rd the trail from the intersection with Margs Draw to a good piece past the trail head parking. As my legs warmed and loosened up, I started introducing a few running steps. Soon, I could not but run. As I hit the bottom of the trail, I saw a woman in running gear, she seemed to be picking through her music collection, didn't hear me approach . She startled when I uttered a greeting. I ran past and lost the trail a little farther, where it crosses the solid rock bottom of the dry creek bed. I climbed higher on some tracks, but they ended at the sheer walls of a cliff. When I cam back to where I had lost the trail, the woman runner had caught up and was looking for the trail, too. She thought it continued in the stream bed. As I looked, I saw the marker to the side, and off I went. I had given up hope to do a circuit route, coming back on Hangover Trail. However, I made it to the intersection with Cow Pies Trail in decent time and decided to check it out. Lost Cow Pies a couple of times as it goes across smooth rock with just a white dot here and there for a marker. Made it to Hangover, which fortunately had some warnings for MTB riders: a double diamond trail 5.5 km long. Too much for my restricted timeline and my sore legs. So I turned back and headed down on Schnebly Road to save time. By myself but for the occasional Pink Jeep tour, which are a real nuisance. On the real rough portions of the road, I easily kept pace with one of them. Glad when it got smoother and he could get away from me. Made it easily back to El Portal with time to take a shower and pack before heading back to Phoenix.

Javelina-Jordan-Cibola Pass Trails
10:53 AM; Javelina-Jordan-, Sedona, AZ

12.6 °C; Clear
Another hilly trail run. Looked at the map and determined the trails to be adequate. Dropped Lynn off at the spa for a foot massage and headed for my own sole massage on the trails. Started uptown Sedona and headed down for the Javelina endpoint, off SR89A. As I entered the trail, our host Steve at El Portal emerged with a friend from his morning hike. The trail climbed mostly. occasionally leveling off and dropping a few times. Mountain views towards the north were gorgeous and the trail was appropriately challenging. Once I moved to Jordan and then to Cibola Pass trails, the terrain became even steeper. Especially the last stretch up to Cibola pass was practically a stair climb. Nice climb, 130 m over 4 km. Foot traffic became thick, I guess everyone was starting their day hikes. From the trail head parking it was an easy jog back to town, I returned just as Lynn was done. We rewarded ourselves with a bagel with smoked salmon and an orange juice at Amara Restaurant.

Airport Loop, Sedona
3:05 PM; Margs Draw Trail, Sedona, AZ

18.1 °C; Partly cloudy
Decided on the airport loop for today's hike. The parking lots were quite a bit busier than other areas as was the stretch on the Sedona View Trail (from the Overlook parking lot to the Airport Vortex. As it often happens, as soon as we were on the loop trail proper, we were by ourselves. The trail has beautiful views of the Munds Mountain Wilderness. As we were hiking, I recognized the Comescu mansion, which sits adjacent to the Chapel of the Holy Cross. I was waiting for the chard-like shape of the chapel to appear. It eventually did, but by that time, I was much more intrigued by the gree-grey branches of the sycamores indicating the course of Oak Creek. The trail finally rose to the top of the table mountain which has the airport and started to drop again. Loud city noises on this side, including saws, barking dogs from a kennel, trucks, hammering ad much more. This was a little much. chatted with a few people along the trail, including a couple collecting medicinal plants and also for some new age stuff. Left Lynn at the vortex when we got there and sprinted up to the top to get the car. Then a slow drive back into town, stop and go.

Margs Draw Trail
12:33 PM; , Sedona AZ

10.6 °C; Cloudy
Needed to do something a little more strenuous today, decided on a quick trail run from our lodgings, Margs Draw. Draw is the US word for re-enrant. There is a draw called Margs Draw, which gave the name to the trail. Ran along Hwy 179, gently climbing to Morgan Rd, and from there more steeply to the trailhead. The trail affords beautiful views of the Munds Mountain Wilderness to the east and of the peaks across the valley and NW of Sedona. It undulates up and down, I had hoped to run the entire way to Shnebly Rd but had to backtrack too often when the trail split into a labyrinth of single tracks. I ended up coming down at Sombart Lane. Not being much used to running anymore, tis was an excellent workout.

West Fork of Oak Creek
2:54 PM; Oak Creek Canyon, AZ

13.0 °C; Snow
Didn't exactly plan this, as the day started to look like a washout. We decided on a drive up Oak Creek Canyon and to hike a little from the West Fork trailhead. It wasn't raining, so we kept going. Left-over snow, even very close to where the fork is, by Hwy 89A. One fun aspect of this hike is that you have to ford the creek in many locations. Along the way, we saw many other hikers from all sorts of ethnicities. Gone are the days when middle class white folks were the only ones you encountered on the trails! Trailsides had been very well worked over by the local herd of peckaries. One part of the creek was still partially frozen over. Whe we got in about 5 km, I asked some returnees whether there was a clear end to the trail, they confirmed there was, about another km or so. Lynn sent me ahead to scout it out, to make sure it was worthwhile. I did, and it was, but it was going to be a strenuous hike for Lynn. I turned back, hoping she had started her descent, which she had done. I jogged most of the trail from where we had split up and returning to catch up with her. At 12.5 km for me and a good 10 km for her, this had been a good hike!

Lynn had found the bird walk while researching activities in the area. We met her friend Jenny and her two sisters there. The bird walk was very well guided by a knowledeable volunteer. Due to its nature, the walk was a slow one.

Chapel of the Holy Cross to Chicken Point
12:31 PM; Chapel Trail, Sedona AZ

14.5 °C; Light rain
Leisurely walk to Chicken Point along Chapel and Little Horse Trails. Glad to see to see so many hikers out, even with Rain threatening. Quite a few MTB riders on Little Horse Trail and on the Chicken Point. The latter also had a bunch of jeep tour vehicles parked on top, kind of obnoxious. We admired the white line on the adjacent cliff, which daring MTBs ride. No room for error, otherwise it would be the last experience in a lifetime. Had a nice chat with a couple from Michigan and then exchanged a few words with a French woman whom I had asked to take our picture. The return trip was much faster but there was a light rain, not enough t soak us and it was a rather mild rain, too. The drive back into town was all stop and go. Regular weekend traffic for Sedona? Nope, it's just the beginning of spring break in these parts, just as for Lynn at the U of MN.

Stumbled in the parking lot as I left, still groggy with sleep. Could have been ugly, but I caught myself. The rest of the walk was rather uneventful. Would have loved to stumble over a good coffee shop but in this mix of light industrial and strip malls, nothing could be found. My first impression: this is a depressing place. Everything covered in asphalt and concrete, Multi-lane roads and highways criss-crossing the area in a grid. What's not covered in man-made surface is dry desert dust. Crossed a large open area to get some natural ground but it had recently been graded and tire tracks were running perpendicular to my way. A few fatties had come through. Looking forward to getting out of this metro monster ...

Just a quick break from driving at the Fossil Creek trailhead outside of Strawberry, AZ. I had hoped we might be abl to reach the creek but at 15 km round trip, involving a drop and then climb of 400+ m between trailhead and creek, we decided on a nice stroll and then focus on getting to Sedona. The landscape looked beautiful in the mid-afternoon sun and I noticed several interesting plants, including some mistletoe-like parasites growing on the prevalent juniper bushes and on some other shrubs. on the way back, som ASU students caught up with us. They looked pretty fit, it had taken them about 5 hrs to make it down and back. Soon after we started drivng again, we encountered snow on the ground at around 1800 m and a emp of around . By the time we were back in the valley, temps were back up to around 23 C.

Did a circuitous route this morning, looking for a trace of Mellie. Our black lab wandered off late last night and did not return home. A garden gate must have been stuck open in the snow. This has happened a few times and the old girl was always back in less than an hour. I am thinking of 3 possibilities: she's been hit by a car, she's been picked up by somebody or she went into a place she couldn't get out. Made a sign, posted to neighborhood group and will call animal control this morning.

Mellie celebrated her homecoming after her stroll last night with an awesome performance on the trail. She kept it up very well. Snow was mostly awesome. A few icy spots on the east side of the ridges we crossed (as opposed to typically the west sides). Some tree work had been done and some heavy equipment had moved across the trail in a couple of spots but it had been smoothed out nicely. And Mellie held in a BM till we stopped near the car, which was greatly appreciated as well. This time of the year, any ski could be the last one till next winter, the three of us appreciated this outing very much.

Much more comfortable. We took some liberties with our usual route, mostly to stay out of the deep snow. Dogs got a lot of off leash time and enjoyed eating the crap revealed by the melting snow. What a shitty day. Compliance and Ethics conference in W Bloomington, had hoped to get an hour of skiing in at Hyland. My eldest dropped off the car, but no key. Super frustrated. Lynn let me have her car to at least be able to attend the conference.
at least the conference was decent, one of the presenter was a law school co-student, said hi to her and also to a former colleague from TR who now works at Mayo. Good walk with dogs, Roux ran along the tracks while Mellie and I walked across the kemps parking lot. He greeted us coming from the other end. Nice evening sky. On the stretch between the Hamline Bridge and Snelling, the snow still topped my rubber boots. Dogs had fun climbing the gigantic mountains of plowed snow.
