Did not climb stairs today because I entered elevator with a colleague I do not know very well and getting off on 26 would have been awkward in the middle of a conversation. Made up for it while my lunch was heating up in the microwave, climbed 8 stairs then.

Cold morning, solid sheet of ice on the rain barrel. Glad I dug up the tender bulbs, dalias and canna yesterday. Did my coffee run this AM, when I walsked into Dunn Bros, it was empty, was helped right away. By the time I walked out to leave, there was a line of 10+ people. Construction on the Lake Street Bridge, took over the bike lane so I rode the sidewalk. Also construction under the I-94 bridge. A gentle headwind along the way, most noticeable on the stretch between Franklin and Washington Bridges. Very few bikes out this morning, mostly along the DT river corridor and CLT. Toes all cold and thingly after the ride, burned a little under the shower. At TPC, they are crcking down on folks who have taken over lockers, keeping their locks on overnight, against locker room policy. Notice went out Friday or yesterday this morning the locks were tagged. Supposedly, they will be cut and removed by Thursday.

About the same temp as yesterday but less wind made all the difference. I did not perceive it as cold. Wondering what's in store for the big open space just east of Snelling. There are white flags marking the excavation boundary covering the entire space between Energy Park Dr. and the tracks and now there are red spray markings for electrical. I am starting to worry about my daily walk with the pooches, this is part of our off-leash area. Did some raking after the walk, yesterday it was taking out the tender bulbs. We'll get that yard winterized before winter comes in earnest.

Stiff headwind and cool temps. Not ideal but it could be raining, which it wasn't. I recalled that when I rode home last week, it looked like the River trail past Mills City Museum and the Guthrie was open again. So i tried it and found my recollections confirmed. The new planks inserted into the boardwalk are very nice and smooth. Waiting to see how they'll hold up. Very few runners out today, I counted only three, two guys with their dogs and a woman. Starting to think what I'll do when it gets too slippery to ride the bike. Counting on two runs to work per week and maybe a yoga session at the Y or at work.

I don't say this very often: it was cold. I guess my bike kit, very light weight and a little damp from the ride home was an inadequate match for the strong NW wind with a few snow flakes mixed in. Kept jogging because I wanted to get out of the wind. Even the dogs seemed uncomfortable. No sauntering Hamline Students while I crossed the campus today. Will adjust for tomorrow's walk.

First time in a long time a did my "traditional" ride, i.e. via Northern Pacific bridge #9, Como, Snelling and Pierce Butler. Based on the short stretch leaving downtown heading west, I was really glad not having to face the wind. At temps just above freezing, I was also glad because I avoided the windchill.

Nice hike with dogs. Lynn was up early to watch the sun rise. Took over dogs from her and continued to Friendly Valley, along the beach. Encountered no car and climbed a ravine, then followed its edge to a field and trail that led to the power line. More traffic on McCulloch, two line-men cherry picker trucks, checking for compromised power lines after the storms. Cut through the back 40 to do last piece home.

Floating Dock Pontoon Salvage

The storm deposited a nice match to the floating dock pontoon already salvaged earlier this year right at the mouth of the Onion. One of the easiest operation ever: floated a rope under the bridge, atached rope to pontoon, puled pontoon under bridge, paddled down with kayak and hauled ponteen into place on old RR grade cutting through back 40. Forgot my gloves, I assume this was a Freudian slip so I could bring Lynn back to show it off.

Mt. Ashwabay Yurt and Seagull Trail
1:41 PM; Washburn, WI

-0.6 °C; Cloudy
Thought about hiking up the ski hill at Mt. Ashwabay, I suggested to hike to the yurt and then to the top of the chairlifts from there. The yurt is awesome, in terms of comfort (as far as I could tell looking in through the window some time back) and views over the bay and the surrounding area. The current tenants were out, Lynn took a good look around the outside. The we hiked to the top of the ski hill via Seagull XC trail and took in the sights. The dogs loved to run through and poke their noses in at least 10 cm of fresh snow. When we got back down to the yurt parking, we encountered its inhabitants for the weekend. They were full of praise and asked us for hiking suggestions. We told them no to miss the 10-15 minute walk to the top of the ski hill.

Onion to Sioux River
8:42 AM; Washburn, WI

3.2 °C; Rain
Stormy weather with waves topping the sand berm, typically 1.5 m above lake level separating lake from wetland. A regular storm surge, that also backed up the Onion River to a point that it almost touched the bottom of the bridge. I donned heavy weather gear, a layer of fleece under a Goretex parka and hip waders. Unfortunately, the parka was not quite long enough and water ran off from it into the waders. Still, the fleece kept me warm enough. The storm (~50 km/h wind, with higher gusts) was something to behold. Trees, heavy pilings, and all sorts of other debris had already been swept up. I skipped the stretch from Friendly Valley to the Sioux and opted to reach it via the RR grade instead. Likewise, I decided to hike back to Bayview Park via the RR grade, to find a little shelter from the wind. about half of that stretch was in ankle to knee-deep water, I was glad I had opted for the waders.
When I was almost done, a couple of guys (from Northland College as I later found out) were getting onto their boards, one one a SUP, the other on a surf board. They were super hyped about the stormy weather and it was fun to see them play. I had always poo-pooed SUPs, but seeing them may make me change my thinking ...

Didn't quite know what to expect from the ride to our volunteer location. The weather was mild, so I took the scenic route, CLT to Theodore Wirth to Luce Line. Stopped a moment by Brownie Lake to take a picture of Target Campus West, where I worked for a couple of years. A little longer, but I think I made up for it by not having to stop for the lights along Glenwood. The wind was a minor factor but it made me think of having it on my tail for the ride home. Lovely leaves in TW Park, a bunch of adorable toddlers by Schaper Pond. I learned why they have that strange detour from Luce Line Trail to Douglas Drive, part of the latter is still under construction, but almost done. I could easily ride on it. Made it to Second Harvest in time to arrive with the bulk of my colleagues.

Fast, wind-driven ride home. When I got to the River Pkwy-CLT intersection, I estimated the total time would be between 45 and 47 minutes. It was 42 min, thanks to the wind. I might have broken 30 km/h hadn't it been for cars forcing me to stop or slow down at the Snelling interchanges. A fun ride, just what the dctor odered before sitting in the car for 3:45 hrs.

Finally a ride without the wind howling. Cool morning but not cold enough for tights, yet, bike shorts still do the job. Army runners on Dinkytown Greenway distracted me and I rode past the exit for the service road to Stone Arch Bridge. Decided to do a uwee and went onto the clean blacktop shoulder to turn around. as I turned, still going forward, the blacktop ended into dirt and my front wheel slid. Minor spill onto my left side. Shoulder and arm took the brunt, nothing serious. My windbreaker didn't even have scuff marks but chain fell off. Rest of ride was unremarkable.

Cool and blustery morning. Decided to give the base coat of blacktop on Pierce Butler a try. Very smooth! The fringe of shrub land along the intermodal yard provided a nice screen from the relentless NW wind. For the rest of the way, I was buffeted and slowed down by its strength, about 5:00 slower than usual. Still, there were a fair amount of cyclists out. I felt bad for the ones cruising towards me as they will be facing the wind on their way home this afternoon.

Heading W towards the CLT, the wind took my breath away when I stopped at LaSalle and 11th. On the bridge across the 394 exit, a gust almost pushed me against the curb. Glad I wasn't fighting this wind for any distance. Once I was heading east, everything was fine, even good.

I felt rather tired but the kick in the pants provided by the Tuesday night intensity group always takes care of that. Lovely evening with a sickle moon, good company, Jamie and I chasing the lead group. Today, we were actually able to keep up with Mike and Jim. Mike had done a 100 mile gravel race in a SE state and Jim was feeling tired. Of course Per and especially Jake were in a league of their own. But I am feeling like I am back where I was before my injury. It's a good feeling! Warm-up jog, then 9 x 2:45 hill bounding for a climb totaling ~35 m over 450 m, followed by a cool-down walk. With the cold NW wind, it did not take long to cool down. glad to change into a dry t-shirt and a warm fleece.

Was debating to head east and north towards the river instead of my initial westward ride towards CLT at Glenwood. Decided for the latter, good decision. Chatted with a young commuter at one of the lights, he had to head W and N, right into the wind. Said he was worried about the bridges. I passed a couple of young guys who were riding two abreast, in a conversation. On Stone Arch, one of them passed me at high speed (I was going around 30 km/h), his buddy close behind, though not able to match my speed. Number one had slowed down by the time I turned onto the RR service road. For the rest of the ride home, I enjoyed the considerable tailwind for the remainder of the way home.

Nice long roller ski around Afton with Karl. I dislike skiing on roads, especially in a group. This was OK, little traffic and few other skiers out. The roads had already mostly dried out after yesterdays rain, with only few slippery, leaf-littered spots remaining. There were still quite a few trees in fall colors, quite beautiful. We explored a few side roads, the first one Quadrant Ave S, on top of 50 St S, extension of River Rd. There is a rise followed by a downhill with a sharp turn. Karl went first, yelling don't go. He had spotted the seam between new and old pavement. He managed just fine but the uphill was covered in wet leaves, was not worth the effort. Towards the end, we explored Tomahawk Dr, off Indian Tr, near the frontage road. Except for the very few slippery spots, it was smooth sailing, which was good, because I had forgotten my helmet.

Pushed it hard on the stretch between TCF Stadium and Snelling. The wind was not favorable but there was a cyclist closing in, I could see him in the mirror. I assumed he would catch me but decided to make him work for it. He almost got me on the transit way climbing the bridge just before getting to Como but I pushed again, powering up the incline. He kept close on Como until I turned S on Snelling. Some consider it poor form to race during the commute. I don't consider this racin, merely being motivated by my fellow cyclists. Consequently, this was a very nice cardio effort, one of my best on a commute to work.

Lovely indian summer afternoon, definitely summer-like temps. Mellie, the selective hypochondriac, decided she could go for a walk after the master came back home. On Monday, my son James called while Lynn and I were on opposite coasts. He had thrown the ball for the dogs in the back yard and Mellie had started limping. The way James had put it, it sounded serious, at the very least a double amputation of the fore legs. Still, I remained optimistic, remembering that mellie had pulled a muscle while playing fetch before. When Lynn got home on Tuesday, mellie greeted her at the door and climbed on the couch to sit next to her. When I got home today, she thundered down the stairs, expecting to be fed. I took her along for the walk, she limped just barely. I modified the walk to go along the grassy boulevard of Pierce Butler, also to check out the progress of road construction. Not a problem, I assume she was healed by the return of master and mistress.

Feeling guilty that I missed this week's "painful" (per Mike B) EU Tuesday night workout, I headed for the hills instead of for the harbor. Last time I was hear was 23 years ago with Lynn and one-year-old Colin, visiting the zoo while Lynn was taking a break from her conference. No regrets, much of the hilly parts were on natural trails rather than on concrete or blacktop. Another day with beautiful morning light. I left the different scents wash over me. Dry-land dust, a strong lemon oil/citronella scent, piss, a skunk, and others. Yesterday it was the smell of ocean and salt lagoons. Just as interesting as the terrain, vegetation or fauna. One unique thing: I was hit in the head by a small tree fruit. Glad it wasn't something bigger. A sign I should buy a lottery ticket?

The DecoBike (similar to our NiceBikes) could have been better, I think I caught a lemon, the big gear kept popping out. I It was a great ride, though the traffic along Harbor Dr. in utter darkness was a little unnerving. Was glad I had programmed the bike into my mobile and even so I missed one turn, at where the bike path branches off S, along I-5. The rest was a piece of cake. Once there was a little brighter, there were quite a few bikes out. Chatted up a nice guy at the Coronado Ferry, riding to work.

Gorgeous morning sky and a little bonus: had Jamie come towards us on his way to work. Chatted for a few and then went our ways. Walked with dogs to Dunn Bros for the weekly beans. Brisk morning, gradually clearing after the rainy night. Highlight for the dogs was walking along the tracks from Hamline and Selby to Summit. It was really too short in terms of oo-leash time but they made the most of it.
Sort of a trip down memory lane, too, when we walked up Fry, I ran into my friend Sher, I used to work with her SO Sarah at TR and we carpooled occasionally, when one of us had vehicle issues. We chatted for a while. Then I walked through the alley behind our previous home on Van Buren and a woman whom I recognized as having moved in on the block around the time we moved to our current home commented on the dogs. I introduced myself and got updated on the neighbors. One neighbor, Paul, passed away a couple of years ago. I also took a little detour onto the little stub of Portland between Hamline and Ayd Mill, to check out my friend Jim's house that had been damaged last winter when a vehicle lost control on Hamline and slammed into his house, which happens to be quite a bit above street level a few houses away from Hamline. That car must have been traveling fast to manage to do that ...

Needed a pair of new slacks for my trip, all the nicer pants I have are starting to fray at the edges. Such is life ... Lynn had a few items as well, since both of us are traveling for the first part of the week it wasn't enough to warrant a trip with the car. One of the easiest and least encumbered ride to the busy Hamline-University area during a busy time I recall, no wait for traffic lights. Saw my boss's boss, who is also traveling to San Diego on my way to check out, she was getting a few final items as well.

Cool morning, thought of wearing a fleece vest over a short-sleeved tee but opted for a canvas jacket. Glad I did and I should have included a pair of light gloves as well, my hands only started only warming up when the sun came out and I was out of the wind. There was a crew working on the Pierce Butler storm drains. and since I had a late start (8:30), there was a lot more traffic than I am used to. The UMN fields are close to being ready for harvest. There were some other dogs around so we cut across one of the corn fields to avoid them, was like in a maize maze. Several events going on at the fair grounds, a book fair and a classic car swap meet. The overflow parking across Como was pretty busy, Hamline U campus was another busy spot, with homecoming today.

After filling up with Punch pizza (1 bufalina, 1/2 focaccia, 1/2 large Punch salad and a glass of the house red--just what the doctor ordered) after the (preventive) gastroenterology visit, I felt like I could brave the urban wild in the company of my canine companions. We made it past Lexington, checked out the progress on the storm drains (they are brought to level but need to be filled and finished) and enjoyed some off leash time. when we crossed the campus, we beheld Lynn, who just came from work. said hi and continued to meet her again at home. There, the dogs pointed out a marauding squirrel to me, which I sent into the great beyond, very much to the dog's delight. A fulfilling day.

Mild morning, wore just a tee and a reflective vest for the ride in and was not cold at all, even worked up a decent sweat. There was a light drizzle or mist, only noticeable in the headlight of my bike and on my goggles. Like yesterday morning, there was a semi with a large tanker hanger at the UMN heating plant but unlike yesterday, it did not distract me enough to miss my turn onto the RR service road. There was some moisture on the Stone Arch Bridge deck, but I think that was condensation. Good ride!

As expected, my upper inside thighs were a little sore this morning. I had felt them protesting during the lunges we were doing yesterday evening and they were still a little mad this morning. Fortunately nothing like the quads last week. Biking, stair climbing and even descending stairs were no issue, except for tired legs. But I took it easy on the ride into work. Not as brisk as yesterday morning but definitely fall-like. Forgot again to take a right onto the RR service road from Dinkytown Greenway so I build in the extra climb from the lower St. Anthony lock. I did not recall any people-dog interaction when we crossed the campus yesterday, so I looked at him uttering a puzzled "huh?" upon which he apologized for yesterday which left me even more puzzled. Starting the week with a café frappé because we ran out of beans while I was on the Vermilion this last weekend. After cold coffee, I headed to Dunn Bros for fresh beans, then to work, along the river. Asked the first cyclist I passe if I could go under the Franklin Bridge and was glad that the very friendly answer was "Yes, it's open." After climbing out of the valley under Northern Pacific #9, 10th Street and I-94W Bridges, I dropped back down to Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock & Dam to avoid the reconstruction of the boardwalk. By the way, after inquiring about the work being done (could not find any info online), I got a very nice response from a city engineer who described the project in great detail for me. 100 ft. of boards replaced, will take about three weeks if no further rain delay.

It started raining during breakfast this morning. Craig and Ben made a great omelette with sausage, tomatoes, peppers and onions, all wrapped in a burrito. Paddling in light rain, gradually, the steep, high banks receded and gave way to a wide valley with reed wetlands farther back and wild rice beds along the narrow channel. Saw a trumpeter swan family and a variety of ducks. The swans were majestic in take-off and the young ones gradually gained height until the parent took the lead, guiding them eastward. Holmes Creek, which we needed to access to get to the landing, was hidden at the end of a bay covered in wild rice and water lilies. Glad I had the 7.5' USGS map printed out and had a good lay of the land. My friends were doubting the direction but the landing came soon in sight. Quick shuttle to the put-in point at the bottom of Tabletop Rapids, bidding farewell to Craig and heading back to Gold Mine Road, then the long ride home.

A little something extra, thanks to an elderly couple with a bichon frise whom I did not want to pass with my two predators. We did find a gap in the heavy traffic on Pierce Butler to make it to the other side. Young maidens asking for permission to pet the dogs, both dogs and maidens were elated. I think Hamline U should provide dog food to us for serving as therapy dogs to alienated students.

It rained all night, more than 50mm as far as I could tell. It had stopped by the time I fed the dogs around 5:00 AM and walked them around the premises and I was hopeful I might be able to ride in almost dry. Still no rain at 6:10, when I got going, but as I approached Minneapolis it started with increasing intensity. the boardwalk across from Mill City Ruins is closed, I assume for repairs, but I did not take the RR service road because of the huge puddles. I stopped to take some pics on the Stone Arch Bridge and then continued. I was drenched by the time I rolled into TPC. There, the automatic gate wasn't working and the security which I called told me that the truck gate at the loading ramp was wide open. I hadn't noticed ... Blame it on my goggles, which were wet and foggy ;-)

Mix of running and walking today, dogs were quite happy with that arrangement. Bright, cool and windy. Dropped or rather flung the doggy remote right in the middle of Pierce Butler as I was greeting the person who had stopped to let us cross.

Decent tailwind, this could have been a PB but I saw something when I was going S on Snelling that made me stop: where the school bus garage used to be, E of Snelling and S of Como, they are building an expansion of the schools (hmong or deaf, not sure which one). Part of this is a parking ramp and some open space. Today, I saw this open space in action, it is actually a soccer field with what may be astro turf. kids playing on it, great!

EU MYR: 45' Hill Bounding

Fartlek-style bounding workout tonight, after a 20' warmup, 45' of continuous bounding, L3-L4 up the major hills, with some jogging on the flats and downhills for recovery. 45' turned out to be 4.5 laps for Jamie, Matt and me. Based on how my quads feel, this was a kick-ass workout. My fancy Garmin watch suggested 28 hours recovery, it hasn't done that in a long time. Beautiful full moon rising on this mild fall night and good company from a lot of friends I hadn't seen in a long time and a few new faces. And the shoulder feels great!

Lucked out again, stopped raining by the time I left the house. Even the roads had started to dry out, shoes were hardly wet.

Stayed dry, mostly. Some mist and drizzle started but stopped again. Warm, maybe the last time this fall. After we got home and I was cooking dinner, it let loose. Hard rain and some thunder and lightning. But we were dry. I guess I could have ridden home from work, starting in rain and ending up dry. But I would have been so wet that I don't think I would have taken the dogs out.

When I entered TPC I thought I might make it in spite of wet roads but by the time I had changed and stepped out with the bike it was raining hard. The Germans have a nice expression for this, "es regnet Bindfäden" literally it's raining twine (or string), meaning the raindrops look like they are in a continuous stream. so I rode just to the Nicollet Mall Green Line station. Look at that funny GPS track :-D

Later than usual, waited to let the rain abate, was well worth it. Just had a couple of sprinkles. Good for the TCM runners, too. Roux had a couple of near misses when chasing rabbits and squirrels. He was happy anyway. Noticed a terrain feature I hadn't been aware of before, because I changed my usual route, following the road between the tracks and McMurray Field. There is a deep trench between the road and the tracks on either side of St. Paul Animal Control. May need to explore this some time.
