Kjarvick-Friendly Valley Loop
6:24 AM; Washburn, WI

12.0 °C; Partly cloudy
Changed route several times during this hike. First, I had planned to cross Hwy 13 at McCulloch, coming from the old RR grade. However, the water in the ditch was too deep and impassable. We decided to reverse the route and go up Kjarvick first. As we got to Friendly Valley, I decided to make this a Kjarvick to Friendly Valley adventure. That worked. Lost cap to my new tele lens during this walk, not a big loss but annoying.

Onion River to Washburn
10:56 AM; Washburn, WI

14.8 °C; Clear
In four years of coming up here and biking a fair amount, this is the first time I've ridden the bike someplace for anything besides fun and exercise. Considering that biking is my main mode of transportation in the cities, that is not bad or is it bad? The freshly installed blacktop was a pleasure to ride on and traffic was not too bad or scary. It will be better when the striping is complete. Needed a charger from Napa and some small brass screws from the hardware store.

Leaving around sunrise but the eastern horizon was cloud covered. The sun did make an appearance after a while. I had my long lens along and stopped frequently for photos, of eagle, mergansers, cedar waxwing and kingfisher. Dogs were happy and well behaved.

Smith Fire Lane-Friendly Valley Loop
10:32 AM; Washburn, WI

24.4 °C; Partly cloudy
Would have gone earlier but as I got in from our walk this morning, it started to rain, with thunder and lightning. Went up Friendly Valley Rd, always a good climb, 180 m from lake level to the highest point. The sandy stretches were pretty firm, coarse gravel put down where logging equipment had churned up the forestry roads was more of a problem, but not insurmountable. No wildlife but I encountered what I have been always wondering and worrying about: a wasp or bee got into one of my helmet vents and stung my scalp a few times. What can you do? By the time I had my helmet off, the beastie was gone. It hurt but I am not allergic and the pain faded quickly. I knew I wanted to return via Smith Fire Lane but I still wanted to get to Whiting Rd. where I had noticed an odd feature while plotting my ride on google maps. Some sort of a depression. So I dragged my bike into the woods from the intersection of Jammer Hill and Whiting Rds. and trudged through dense underbrush. I gave up, estimating that I should have found it and assuming that the satellite imagery was not up-to-date. When I checked after getting home, it turned out that I should have aimed farther east. There is a bend in Whiting road that would be a good attack point. Next time, soon!

Swimming Open Water 10:00 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (4:00 @2) 0.0 km

Open Water Swim w/ Flippers
Bayview Park Beach

20.0 °C; Clear
Using flippers because I do still have a hard time with strokes, due to my shoulder injury. More snorkeling than swimming, explored the off-shore weed beds. Found a sandbox bucket, saw a few tiny fish. Annoyingly, my mask would fog over in spite of using spit to coat it. Felt great after the long time in the Hobie kayak. Followed by a dip in our neighbor's hot tub.

Salvage at Bayview Park Beach
7:12 AM; Washburn, WI

15.7 °C; Cloudy
Getting this log that had been the plank in my eye for about two months. Lost two of them to my neighbors, I could have had all three if I had been a little faster on the uptake. A hefty piece of wood, a cylinder ~60 cm across and high. Took my peavey along and hammered an eye hook into the wood to attach a rope. First time I needed to assist the pedal action of my hobie with a paddle, it was like doing a workout pulling a truck tire behind me. I am getting pretty handy using the peavey, was able to roll the log up the currently fairly steep bank at our place.
Before I started on this chore, I met two women called Mary, one with a young golden retriever, the other with two labs and some smaller dog. The latter was the former owner (till 2012) of the Good Thyme restaurant, which sadly recently closed. Roux was besides himself about all the play action and socializing.

Sail-assisted pedal-paddle to Houghton Falls. I think this was the single longest outing with Lynn, yet. Perfect wind direction helped us along, except where we hugged the shore to do sight seeing. I varied my pedaling to also losen my ankle joint in the process. Paddled right by Rick and Darlene's house and rounded the the Houghton Point signal. Had a picnic on the Hobie while entirely progressing under sail. We were ready for a dip when we came back.

Onion River to Long Island
7:46 AM; Washburn, WI

18.1 °C; Cloudy
Excellent conditions for the planned longer kayak outing, no wind, no waves, no rain, no hot sun. The sky looked somewhat threatening but that's all it was. As I approached Long Island, the east started getting lost in low-hanging clouds. I saw a sail in the South Channel and after I passed Chequamegon Point Light, a small fishing boat in the distance. At the lighthouse I saw several bald eagles, two adults and a couple of juveniles. The young ones were begging for food and it looked like the parents were obliging. Made my way to the portage trail on the bay side of the island. By now, I have a pretty good idea where it is located and head in the correct direction without hesitation, with or without fog. I could hear the surf on the east side of the island before I got to shore. There were meter-high breakers with moments of calm between series of them and I decided I could put in. Portaged, making sure to stay clear of the poison ivy and waited for the moment. I missed my first chance, but then launched. I got a splash or two from a wave, nothing serious. No chance to attach the spray skirt but once I was clear of the breakers, the waves were no higher than .5 m. Before I got to La Pointe Light, I met another paddler, he asked me if I came from the campground, and whether it was far. Told him that the only camping spots I was aware of were some NPS sites, one very close to the La Pointe Light, which he had passed. As I continued, I saw a lot of trees that had been washed lose by the almost record-high lake waters. Once I was clear of Long Island, the passage back to Onion River was uneventful, just long, as usual.

Lovely pedal paddle. We pedaled the entire time, even though the wind was pretty decent. The eagle's nest NE of our place is putting the tree it's built in at an imbalance, doubt that it will make it through the winter. Observed a juvenile sitting in tree and in flight. The water was perfectly flat, in spite of the wind.

Experimenting with a crayfish trap, I am sure here are some in the river, see parts of them in the lake, and on the banks, where otters have feasted. Also a bit of exploring. The water is super high, the spotted alder shrubland is dying. I suppose that's just the natiral cycle. Just read an article about Lake Superior water levels being just shy of the record set in 1950, about 1 m higher than when we bought the place in 2013.

Lynn took out Mellie for a walk and Roux was very sad. Quickly installed the Rixen & Kaul KlickFix bike attachment thingy on my handlebars for which I had purchased a bikejoring attachment last year. Then I took the bike and Roux for a spin. Since it was getting dark and I did not want to take Hwy 13, experimenting with an unproven setup. so we went back and forth on Bayview Park Rd two times, a little less than 2 km. Roux did very well, I just wish I had had not forgotten the harness. Got a little tired during the second lap.

Hit the beach just as the sun was peeping out over the horizon, through a narrow gap between Madeline Island and the clouds that would soon swallow it, not to be seen for the remainder of the day. The forecast was pretty clear: rain for the rest of the day, the coming night and part of the morning after. A few photo stops along the way, sunrise, the narrowing mouth of the Sioux and some insects and blossoms. After I got back, I installed a wader hanger I had prepared for the shed and moved the one already in to the outside. I did make a second one for my friend Craig. I should have done a little bike ride with Roux instead and done the chore later. Went fishing in the rain, PM, no fish, I assume they were trying to stay dry, too. Lynn and I decided to go see Dunkirk but the theater was sold out. The guy at the till said we should try tomorrow, should be OK if it wasn't raining ... Went to the Deep Water Grille instead for a nice early dinner.

One short stop at 1st Ave light, other than that fairly smooth sailing. A lot of runners out today, some going four abreast on bike trail, not moving out of the way for bikes. Almost 30 km/h in mixed city riding, above 30 km/h if stops are not counted. Pretty happy.

4:42 PM; Oak Park Heights, MN

26.3 °C; Clear
Just a short ride with Lynn, Peggy and Joel, to inaugurate the bridge for us. we drove across, too, whether this will be a great way to return from the cabin remains to be seen. Traffic on 36 is quite heavy and there are a lot of lights in the Stillwater area. But the bike trail across is awesome and the sights are breathtaking. Can't wait for the circuit betwenn the old and new bridge is ready!

Slightly extended walk this afternoon, overshot Lexington by one block to check out an Alumacraft fishing boat on a trailer I had seen for sale while driving by. It seemed waterproof, since water had collected within. Will check with the comptroller to see if we can add to our flotilla. Took some pictures of a cicada which appeared have just left the nymph stage, looked so pretty and fresh. As we emerged from Hamline U campus onto Englewood, I noticed my old neighbor Ole shuffling down the sidewalk and then towards a retaining wall, on which he sat to rest. Walked over to check in, of course he said he was OK, had just walked a little too far. As we were chatting, a second person, by all appearance another Hamline colleague, joined that's when I took my leave, not before Heather, who appeared to have her daughter with her shouted out to me from her car.

A repeat of yesterday morning, even less effort. Did not have the lights in my favor downtown. Squirrel between me and chain link fence on CLT, I never like that. A noticeable headwind this afternoon. Was set on taking my wind avoidance route but someone who did a rolling stop and almost hit me at Malcolm rattled me so I kept going straight when i got to Westgate. The guy totally did not see me, probably just looking something bus-sized out of the corner of his eyes. His windows were down and I gave him a very impolite version of the Bronx cheer. It wasn't all bad, though, got some extra workout thanks to the extra headwind and was quite happy with my effort.

The dogs were intrigued by the people sitting in small groups on the lawns, where they'd expect to see squirrels and rabbits. Saw a big butterfly from the papillio family flutter by, did not look like the tiger nor the black swallowtail. Other than that, not much t report.

Was waiting for a work call on my mobile and it came shortly before reaching Pierce Butler, walking up Hamline. Did not want to deal with traffic noise while consulting on where compliance interfaces with technology so turned on Hewitt, a quiet neighborhood street. The conversation went well until Roux had to take a dump. Here I stood, a plastic covered hand with a good-sized load of crap in one hand, my mobile in the other. At least the dogs weren't pulling on their leashes or barking at something. The call eventually ended and we moved on. I recall that Erin B frequently took work calls while out on a run. Whenever I bike or roller ski (mostly the latter) the Gateway Trail, I think it would be great to salvage some of the horse droppings from the adjacent equine trail. Today I did. I first thought of mounting an 18.9 liter bucket ( that is five gallons in medieval and obsolete measurements) on either side of my bike but thought I'd be better off to simply use my grocery bag carriers with a double bag in each. I also brought a trowel to pick up the manure and a stick, to thump it down in the bags. I ended up picking up the dung with my hand and never used the trowel. However, I made good use of the stick and probably got in twice as much that way. I did not even have to get off the bike. Had a nice chat with a dog walker who admired my ingenuity. I turned back as soon as I could not fit any more shit in my bags, the ride back along the blacktopped trail taking less than half the time it took me to go out, stopping to pick up a nice pile every so often.

Decided to take it easy this morning and took the route along Pierce Butler and through S St. Anthony. Felt very relaxed and took it mostly easy along the entire stretch. In spite of this, I still managed a decent pace. A gorgeous morning, mists over green areas and the hills and buildings at a distance looked like paper-cut silhouettes. Being lost in thoughts about the beauty of this early morning made me forget that I was on the bike trail along the UMN Transitway. Lovely afternoon walk. Both dogs did their business within half a block from home, making me struggle with the one baggy i had. Ole, my 85 year old neighbor noticed, and yelled waving a newspaper bag at me. "It's from the Sunday paper." he said. Having my hands full with a double poop bag and two squirmy dogs who were responding to Ole's springer's barking, I had him stuff it in my fanny pack, as a spare. Aske how he was feeling, having just been released from hospital with a heart scare. "Better," he said, and when I wished him a speedy recovery, he said "I hope so, too." Interesting ride home. Very normal start, with the usual 4:00 PM traffic downtown. Everything very routine until I got to the Transitway. A cop car with flashing lights was sitting at the corner of 25th Ave SE on the Transitway. My light was red, so I turned onto the bike trail when the two cops hailed me. I thought it was because I was violating the red light but the said there was a gas leak and that the Transitway was closed up ahead. Indeed, I saw flashing lights of fire trucks where the Green Line turns back to University. So I went onto University. There was a loud hissing noise and strong gas smell at the Prospect Park station. Many TV crews had set up, too. Took a couple of picks, then continued, bantering with some other cyclists who had been inconvenienced, too. On top of the hill, I crossed to the N side of University to make my way back to the Transitway. A quick check-in with another cop cop confirmed that it should work, and it did. At Westgate, I was back on track and the rest of the ride home was normal. Lost only about 5-6 minutes from my normal ride home.

Circuitous variation on one of my standard routes, wanted to give the dogs some extra off leash time. Water aerobics going on at Como Pool, the dogs were intrigued by the noise and the commotion. Back to Energy Park and some more free range dogs. Some light exercise after yesterday's major rollerski workout, which I feel more in my legs than in my shoulder!
Upon returning, I reduced a broken upholstered chair to a package size that fits in our 30 ga. garbage can. Had been on my chore list for a long time, now it's gone, along with this week's garbage and dog do.

First full roller ski with poles and Karl and everything! Did not know what to expect for my shoulder but I knew after a couple of km that it would not be a problem. Very light use on the way out to Stillwater via Gateway and Brown's Creek trails, getting pretty busy on the way back. Ran into Ian and Loretta at the golf course on the way back, they were riding to have brunch in Stillwater. After leading the climb out of the St. Croix valley, I did notice that I am not quite in perfect shape yet. But that will come. Just glad that I can ski again, I am much less sore (as in not sore at all!) than I was after the paddle last weekend. Yay!!!

Lovely morning just after sunrise! Did the Short hike to Lexington instead of Snelling. The dogs like it when I mix it up. Wanted to visit a dumpster I had noticed last night. Got a nice under-cabinet fluorescent fixture for my shop. Got back home with some time to spare to get ready for the roller ski with Karl.

Cool morning, even wearing a light long-sleeved tee. It felt like there was a very slight headwind, though I am not sure. I rode hard on the campus connector, took a break on the West River Pkwy trail and increased speed and effort again on the CLT. Very few bikes out this AM. Didn't think I was that early.

It was supposed to be a tailwind but somehow it felt more like a headwind. But I hit it hard and made good time. Based on my HR, it was a good effort, too. Fairly low traffic, but it's Friday afternoon. Always light. Very pleasant temps.

No bike ride today, instead a little longer than usual weekday walk with the dogs on this cool and blustery afternoon. We stayed mostly dry, only at the end it started to rain. The remainder of the pine trees under the power line are gone, very sad, I will miss them.

Stair Climbing

Fast warm-up walk to TCC, then 10 floor climb sideways, as a specific strength for knees. 5 floors crossing over left, then 5 floors crossing over right. I do this most every day I am walking to the office, just like to record a benchmark once in a while. Just noticing something odd with my HR, should have gone up towards the end, must have lost contact.

Nice morning for a ride, feeling good, pedaling hard. Quite a bit of foot and bike traffic along the West River Pkwy Trail. Good average speed in spite of red lights downtown. Amazed at how few bikes were parked at TPC this morning.

Fast hike today. Quite a few jogging section built in. More trees removed in Energy Park, I am seeing a pattern: all trees felled are under the high current transmission line. What surprises me is that the trees aren't all that high, half or less the distance between ground and the lowest cables. They must be worried about arcing. Dogs greeted a tiny young pup and its owner. I like how gentle and friendly they are.

Good ride in, no wind so to speak of. Had a dentist or rather periodontist appointment this morning for some minor surgery. No big deal, to take care of a deep pocket. I practice some form of deep meditation in a dentist chair, trying to relax as much as I can. Seems to work. I always get the best patient award for not fidgeting.

Good ride, hit the DT lights just right and had a nice little tailwind for the better part of the way, too. Busy around Stone Arch Bridge and several TV trucks out for the commemoration of the Minneapolis I-94 bridge collapse in 2007. Remember it well, boys and I had left town a day earlier to drive to Denver where we met Lynn who was attending a conference, flying in a day later, the day of the collapse, as a matter of fact. We walked into a room with free food set up for conference attendees and saw the aftermath on TVs around the room. We were relieved to get a call from Lynn who had jsut landed and who didn't even know what had happened. As time goes by ...

Sultry afternoon. Neighbors Diane and Jana were setting up for national night out, right in front. During the walk, I noted with chagrin that they took three small pine trees down. They always reminded me of the Torrey pines in the state park of the same name N of San Diego. Now only three or four are remaining. An itinerant greeted me at Snelling and Energy Park Drive, looked like he might be spending the night. Also noticed that Hamline U is replacing their slate roof with a chepa asphalt shingle one. Must be strapped for cash ...
