Needed to run a quick errant at Menards. Made it a longish errant because I did not want to cheat the dogs out of their off leash time along the tracks. Promptly forgot my wallet at the checkout but noticed soon after I disentangled the dogs from their hitching post.

McMurray fields today. Outstate canine cops still there. Said hi and inquired about their activities. they were rather monosyllabic, answering with a simple "yep" to all of my questions. Have to work on asking more open ended questions ...

Wolves at zoo were asnooze in the morning sun when we walked by but woke up when we crossed the wind. Amazing how quickly they rouse. there wer 5-6 police car on Como Ave, when I came closer, I saw they were all canine cops from various places around the state. Probably some exercise. The dogs were still in the squad cars and raised hell when we walked by.
Confirming that they took a lot more trees down near Lexington and the tracks, N of the wetland.

Guys with chainsaws walking from the US Bank service center towards the tracks. looks like they are taming my little wilderness further :-) After releasing the dogs off McMurray fields, Mellie started to dawdle. I think that old lady does think she doesn't to follow commands any more. I put her on leash for the rest of the walk.

Headed back to the UMN ag campus fields, going counter clockwise today. The dogs love the wide-open space but prefer not to run in the freshly plowed fields. I can empathise. Fortunately, there are many strips of lawn separating the different parcels, making for wonderful walking and running. Heard my first red-winged blackbird to day and the freshly filled feeders in our backyard were being visited by juncos, house finches, downy woodpecker, cardinal and bluejay, all at once. Spring is in the air!

6.6 °C; Cloudy
Going for some distance and tried the crushed limestone paths next to McMurray Fields. Nice! it will be interesting to see how the new road set-up around Como Pool and McMurray Fields will work. One weird omission is a pedestrian/bike path or sidewalk along the quite narrow one-way parallel to Lexington. Are they expecting folks to use the sidewalk along Lexington or to walk on the grass?

First time we got yelled at by security walking along the tracks. They came from behind on the black-topped service road, we were hiking along on the unimproved N side of the tracks. A short siren, beep and then a dressing down over loudspeaker. I ignored them, we were just between the Kemps and the Wells Fargo buildings, affording us a way to continue across the Kemps parking lot. I think the guy was peeved that we did not stop. Granted, I know we are trespassing, but there are no fences, not even no trespassing signs where we cross in. Oh well. I did notice more security vehicles lately and I also wonder if the sudden move of the hobo tent close to Lexington is related.

Onion to Sioux River

-2.1 °C; Partly cloudy
Quick hike to the Sioux, wai there on the RR grade, on way back along the beach. The ice was still firm enough to walk along the edge on the Sioux River slough towards the shore. Lynn joined us for the stretch to Bayview Beach and turned back with Mellie, who was still recovering from yesterday's efforts. Roux broke through the ice at the mouth of the Sioux, while harassing some geese. They seemed to laugh at his mishap while he was rather surprised and taken aback. Picked up a nice 2 x 10 8 footer driftwood on the way back, adding to the training effort.

Onion River Valley Loop
8:54 AM; Washburn, WI

-0.6 °C; Partly cloudy
Looking for an adventure I decided to cut across from Smith Fire Lane to the Onion and follow it down to the power line. Plotted it out on Google maps, looked for some contour features and off we were. Three cars crossed us on Kjarvick, all had a friendly wave for us, one older guy stopped to say hi, he had a gigantic chocolate lab in the back, 120 lbs. Starting on Smith Fire Lane, we were the first to go there since yesterday's fresh snow, except for one lone pedestrian. As we continued, I wondered if we'd get to meet the owner of these tracks. The road leads deeper into the back country, unless the person was on a 20+ km hike or run on the dirt roads or a somewhat shorter adventure bushwhacking, they would have to come back towards us. Sure enough, after a while a young woman came running towards us, a friendly smile for me and a gingerly look for the dogs, who did not pay her any attention. Good dogs!
I had memorized the general area where I needed to cut north towards the Onion. I noticed a trailhead on the right with a river improvement sign, decided to divert from Smith Fire Lane here. Nice to continue on a rough but clear trail till I got to the ravines that indicated the river. I climbed down, amazing how little snow there was on the flat, and how deep it was in the valley.
As expected, following the Onion was slow, a lot of climbing through deadfall, avoiding places where the stream winds in tight s-curves. I kept an eye to the sky for the power line. Eventually, we came onto an area where someone had broken trail for passage with an ATV. We took this trail all the way to the power line, where we climbed out of the valley to join up with McCulloch. We came back in through our back 40 from Hwy 13.
I was gld to be done without bumping my shoulder, which I am protecting with an arm brace. However, immediately after I was done with my shower, Mellie regurgitated what seemed like half a gallon of liquid manure, result of her having indulged in some horse droppings along the way. It took me the better part of an hour to clean up this mess.

Temp is trending to warmer, only -10 °C this morning, as opposed to -12 °C yesterday and -15 °C Friday. You know what that means: snow. Not supposed to get that much but with the meteorological track record this year I wouldn't be surprised if this is finally the big one. Just a nice morning to be out, not too many people, I guess everyone is getting use to daylight saving time. Most early morning walkers had their dogs along, One guy with a Australian shepherd was playing catch on the glacier (no snow or ice left) and a woman with a very happy-looking lab carrying his fetch toy came towards us near Gabes by the Park.
