A few sprinkles as I pulled away from home and a free-range black lab crossing the street in front of me, no owner in sight. Black labs are hard to see in the dark, he came kind of unexpected. Funny how something like that raises ones hackles, literally, not figuratively in the human sense. I felt the little hair in my neck stand up. Made a point of counting the bikes I saw this morning: 5 to the Guthrie and 4 for the rest of the way to TPC. Not many bikes in the garage, either. It was early and there's some rain in the forecast for this morning. Curious to see how many fellow riders are making it in.

Milder today than yesterday but it did not feel like it. Made it back before rain, quite a bit of jogging today. Incident at the athletic field center: a small utility vehicles Hamline uses to collect garbage, etc. approached just as we were crossing the steet right in front. Roux went right for it, like he wanted to play with it, started barking, pulled hard on the leash. Either he thinks since it's almost prey-sized, it's edible or he wants to just play with it. Could also be that he had a bad experience with one when he was a stray.

A little windy, turned out to be not too much of a factor since it was more helpful than a hinderance. Biking between the downtown high rises is weird, since the wind swirls and eddies. I definitely had a sense that it was coming from the west. Big relief when I turned onto the CLT and then the rest of the way. Down the bridge grade towards Como was where I could really appreciate its strength, as it was blowing in my face. Similarly, riding S on Snelling, I did feel no wind at all, even though as riding close to 30 km/h. an easy ride home is always appreciated.

Fast ride in this morning, possibly the fastest one yet on this route, need to check. The super strong cyclist on his custom touring bike caught me at Como and the UMN Transit Way. He had a young woman in tow, also a strong cyclist. I missed the drafting train but knew that he likes to pass fast, but then levels off. So I pedaled for dear life to keep them within reach. Abreast with the biomed research center, they switched leads. I took my usual route on the Dinkytown Greenway, starting at the big tree, they took the next trail entrance near the bridge and had to slow down because of the sharp turns. So I caught up. Young woman stopped at the UMN loading docks, and strong rider took a left on 13th Av, where I took a right to get onto the river trail. Fun fun fun!

Started the week with coffee bean purchase at Dunn Bros. Sarah walked in as I left there and at Summit and Cretin, I caught up with someone with a nordic ski team jacket, who had pulled in ahead of me from Cleveland. Turned out to be Elsbeth, also on her way to work. We exchanged a greeting and a few words while negotiating traffic while crossing Cretin onto E River Blvd. I felt bad not having time to chat a little more but I needed to hurry in, running late. I had decided to try the Hiawatha Trail. Up to the Westbank and on from there, it was very nice, but entering downtown and making my way across to TPC was a pain. I'll take the 8 km detour along the Kenilworth trail again next time. It may get better when the construction along the w-bound 94 exit ramp to 5th St. is open again, if it connects, that is.

Nice Lex-Snelling hike. Hobo sleeping in the bermuda triangel between BNSF tracks, Snelling and Energy Park Drive. I had already put the dogs back on, otherwise the guy would have had a sloppy awakening. He must have heard us walk by because he was awake when I walked by on Snelling and looked down. We exchanged a wave. Mellie seems better today.

Came home to a minor disaster: Mellie had gotten sick in her crate. Better that than all over the house. Gave her a bath, cleaned crate and did walk. Kept both dogs on leash most of the time because I suspected that they may have picked up they deemed palateble but that was not good for dogs. Chatted Diane on the way out and with Uwe as we approached home.

Parked in City Center today and took Hennepin to !st Str N and went home from there. Took the S St. Anthony variant to avoid the NE wind. Rode along Pierce Butler, which was just fine. Couple people cut me off, one woman with a big honking SUV passed me very slowly and took a right turn in front of me into a UMN ramp. On the other hand, a semi on Pierce Butler could have very easily done the same, turning S onto Snelling but adjusted his speed to let me cross the exit. I've said this before, as a bicyclist, I am generally impressed with commercial drivers and how mindful they are.

Very nice commute this morning, cool but no wind. I was running a little behind, getting ready after a weekend at the cabin. Had tried to remove the freehub from my bike but was unsuccessful, even using a pipe to extend leverage on the beefy 11 mm allen wrench. I have to figure out how to hold the wheel so I can work the wrench and extension with both hands. I lubricated the old freehub as good as I could but it still makes gravely and crunching noises but does not skip.

Could not resist, in spite of the frosty morning. Remembering my wipe-out last November, I took sharp turns rather conservatively. In open areas, the trail was white with frost. Beautiful orange to blue gradient in the eastern sky, the actual sunrise about halfway into the ride while crossing Dowling. Swift progression and only a couple instances of hesitation over route selection. Funny thing: even during the second ride along this stretch I am already noticing the "regulars," like a lady walking two Weimaraners or the guy sitting in a Earl's plumbing van in the North Mississippi Regional Park lot.The only instances where I had to clip out and wait for a light were all within a few km of my destination in TNC. It blows my mind to be able to ride this far in an urban environment without being constantly held up by traffic.

BS for first 40 lengths, then alternating 2 BS, 1 FS.
Water therapy and/or rest are working: L shoulder is feeling a lot better and FS is not too much of a bother. My left knee pops during BS kick, though, and that worries me a little. Does not hurt but it seems like it should not happen. When I focus, I can prevent it. Need to do my knee strengthening exercises I got during PT.

A full week before the ides of March and it's 13C at 5:00 AM. No reason to delay getting this item off my bucket list: biking to TNC, Target North Campus, in NW Brooklyn Park. The southerly wind was favorable, too, I just hope that the forcast will hold and it will be the westerly breeze this afternoon. I did not know what to expect, budgeted 1:30 hrs, it took me ~1:23, doubtlessly because of the wind. Not sure if it rained overnight, the roads were moist, wet in deep shade. Makes me think that it was mostly condensation in cold spots. Traffic was light and there were amazingly few stop signs and hardly any lights. I had to stop 3-4 times during my entire ride. There was a mix of residential, industrial and park areas along the route, quite pleasant. Only saw very few other cyclists probably due to the early hour. TNC has a nice bike room, too. I had requested access to the locker room yesterday, the CS rep who processed me was Kim, whom I know. Fun to unexpectedly run into someone far from my home base.

The wind was not as cooperative as I had hoped, on the south facing stretch at least. But it was manageable. Stopped quite a few times to take pictures in the beautiful evening light. I did notice how the temp declined, starting near 20 °C and finishing around 13 °C. I am impressed with this route. Much on trails, and where it follows roads, the curbs are wide and traffic is fairly light. The MRT (Mississippi River Trail is well signed, it's hard to get lost. One little gripe is that much of the trail follows I-94 and Hwy 252, two busy roadways. The traffic noise is a bother but it sure is an efficient way to get to TNC.

Trying to get another ski in while the man-made loops last. Andy was just starting, too, so we skied together. Saw Kitty and Erica doing their rounds. The trail was being prepped (with flags) for a 9:00 race, hurried to get my 5 laps in. Caught up with Kitty and skied with them during my last lap. They included Boulder Ridge, for which I did not nave the stomach. Did a few cool down laps on the flat to finish at 9:00 sharp. The last one? Who knows ...

First time doing my regular route to TPC. It's a couple of km longer but I prefer going around downtown to the Cedar Lake Trail exit to Glenwood. It flows better and there are fewer lights and a little less traffic than going down Portland from the river. Very nice morning, wind not noticeable because the little there was was from the east. Saw less than 5 other cyclists this morning. I am sure this will change, soon.

Some running, some walking. Roux is on the prowl, looking for more victims among the local rabbit population. They are everywhere, When the dogs are at work, I see three to five at any given time, little white cottontails in a brown landscape. They are lucky that the dogs are lower on the ground and lack my vantage point. New shoes today, Hoka One One, trying something with more cushoning that might be easier on my knees.

The big event: lil' Roux finally got a rabbit. Very happy pooch. I was not quite as happy since for once, I did have neither camera nor phone along. Nor did I have a pocket knife to bleed and field dress the little guy. A plastic bag would have been nice, too. Oh well, the way Roux going at it, there will be more. And I would have been a little leery to cook something that's grown up on top of a Super Fund site.

Cold and sunny, did not ride bike today. Not because of the cold but there was snow on the ground. Should have taken in on the LRT, pavement was dry this PM. Oh well, read another chapter in my book instead. Unmarked squad car at the other end of our block, right across from Friend School, I think looking for stop sign runners. If that's what it was, I am glad, somebody is going to get hurt at that corner. Someone rolled down the window to praise my dogs. Always nice to hear. Saw cop again, on his way to the precinct when I was on Snelling.
