Note

No walk with dogs today, no Sisu/EU group. Picked up Lynn from Dr. visit, her, or rather my car had a flat tire in the Region's Hospital roundabout. Switched tire out, went very efficiently and brought flat to Discount Tires for repair. Errants after that. Needed a full rest day.

Today, I needed to change into warm and dry clothes after riding home from work. I wasn't wet from sweat today, rather from the wet road surface. So hiking boots, thermal underwear and my trusty goretex parka from Cabelas insulated me from wet and cold. The dogs kept warm by generating heat. Glad I did not skip today, I missed yesterday's hike.

All seemingly minor but they added up. Interesting ride to work, coming from a different side. Lots of cyclists out, must be because I was later by quite a bit.

The lake was calm this morning, no waves. Also wore wellingtons. Made for easier walking on firm sand. Fisherman bringing his Hobie Pro Angler kayak to water, asked him about it and told him about my Island Adventure tandem. He beamed, his was brand new. On the way back, we took the RR grade along Hwy 13. At the overflow parking for Friendly Valley Beach, I noticed an apple tree. Picked as much as I could fit in the pockets of my parka. Ate one, not bad at all, and surprisingly, no worms.

Joined Craig for some mountain biking. He passed me in his van an Hwy 13, arrived at trailhead about 5 minutes later. Fun time on the trails, we had to give up on Dirt Lip, Craig's old Trek touring bike just wasn't built for an intermediate trail. I was impressed how he could manage most climbs and obstacles on the other trails! After leaving him at the lot, I climbed back up and exited the trails via the Whiting Rd. trailhead. I came passed a guy who was doing trail maintenance, stopped for a chat. He was adding clay to the sand in a banked turn to firm it up. Another great morning to be out!

Convalescing from my hip joint sprain and not doing any high intensity workouts. Did a pole hike with my dogs instead of hill bounding with my friends. Followed many single track trails, went up Battle Creek trail and had all in all a great experience. Hip joint a little sore, but in a good way. Beautiful, warm fall evening, quite unseasonable. Cold spot was the battle Creek valley. Super dry, there's dust in the air everywhere and the dirt is like powder. I noticed that a door in the basement that always sticks, except in the deepest winter when the humidity is super low is opening freely. A little worrisome ...

Ok, this wasn't exactly the most strenuous of my rounds. Both Lynn and eldest son Colin came along. There was much talking, stopping for picture and slow stepping on my part. The French have a good word for this, flâner, in English to saunter. The accent circonflexe draws that a out much better than the au in saunter, but my heart rate barely made it out of resting status. Whilst off leash, the dogs threatened to abandon us several times because things just weren't moving. They sure had a decent workout going back and forth. I did not but it was certainly not a good walk spoiled.

We took to Cayuga route to avoid the narrow stretch on Pennsylvania and were almost twarthed here as well: major construction in full progress. We even tried to walk bikes towards a park on the other side of the construction site but there was a canyon the size of the Big Dig between us and our goal. Our attempt included an epic slo-mo fall, when my bike got stuck in soft sand and I didn't get my foot out of the pedal. Fortunately, we saw a Metro Transit bus move through the site and decided to follow figuring the worst that could happen would be to be yelled at. No further delay ...

My fingers were getting cold in spite of thick xc ski gloves, my toes were getting tingly and I was secretly wishing for another layer. Maybe time to look for those long pants. The best sign that this was a cold ride: no sweat. I always sweat, even on the coldest days of winter.

Beautiful evening. As some of us had expected, it wasn't quite dark enough for the golfers to be gone. So we ran around the zoo to end up on the hill along the west side of the park. Started out with the plyos:
Bounding x 5
Sideways push-off jump
High skipping
Broad jumps
Skate sim
Then hill reps, I did 20 x the steep hill. near the pond on W side.
Great workout, ran back with Jeff B along the ridge trail. Stumped my left foot on some tree root or rock and felt something pop in my hip joint. Somewhat sore now but it seems OK. We'll see tomorrow ...

Was one of only two who participated in the fire drill from my group. As I was walking donw the stairs from the 36th floor, I was thinking it would be much more fun to walk UP the 750 or so steps. Once we got to the gathering point at Target Center, I decided that if I would find the right door, I would head up the stairs again. I did find them and I did climb. Turns out that I had pretty much exactly the same time going up and going down. The difference was HR and sweat. Needed to change my shirt when I got back to 36, glad I had a spare at my desk. Garmin Fenix 2 very accurately tracked the elevation lost and gained, I checked by calculating after measuring a stair tread.

Cool but not cold. Long sleeves for morning ride, hands without gloves a little tingly. Anticipating t-shirt for the ride home. It's that time of the year when you see a variety of dress on the bike trail, between light, to medium, all the way to something that I would wear in January. Noticed someone riding ahead who seemed to have a largish musical instrument to her back. Think tuba or cello. Awesome, my favorite entry and exit to the city is back in business. Posted a question in Metro Cycling FB group this morning and got a response to that effect. I am surprised, based on the progress, or rather lack thereof I observed last Wednesday.
Was passed by the young guy with a heavy duty touring bike who sometimes does so. I let him go but eventually caught up with him on the UMN Transit Way. We chatted a little, the touring bike is a steel frame a friend of his made. Looks heavy duty and has all the trappings for some serious touring. We parted ways at Snelling.

Cardiac Stress Test
3:26 PM; Regions Heart Center

Stress test to check out my calcified heart.
1. They attached the electrodes, took my blood pressure and put in a port to inject an ultrasound contrast medium (little bubbles, I am told)
2. A resting EKG, to establish a baseline.
3. An ultrasound of the heart, specifically the left ventrical, taking several pictures. (Thanks to the gods, I'm not pregnant, At my age, that would certainly not be healthy)
4. If anything had been found to be suspiciously abnormal, they would have paused to consult the cardiologist on duty. Everything looked fine.
5. On the treadmill. 4 x 3:00 intervals at increasing speed and incline. BP taken at 2:30 of each interval
6. One more 2:00 interval, solidly in L4, moving towards L5. They stopped me there because they needed to take another series of ultrasound pics of my heart, which has to be done very quickly because the contrast medium is exhaled within 2:00 and because they can't take the picture if someone's breathing uncontrollably. They did not know me.
7. Beautiful pictures taken of my left ventrical in action. They did not let me back on the treadmill as a reward, because
8. Another set of pics taken when my heart was back at rest, after another minute or so.
9. Port and electrodes removed, I could stand up and recover, walking slowly on the threadmill. One more BP taken which confirmed that I did not need immediate surgical intervention.
Pretty similar to VO2 max test.

Craig's mountain man breakfast in the Dutch Oven is always a hit. Went for a little hike and then took off. An easy paddle with some waterfowl, first in deeply cut valleys, then through riparian forests and floodplains. while I was getting over a log jam (one submerged log) Roux had to test the waters again. Not really a problem to get him in. Big scare when I couldn't find my car keys at McDowell Bridge Landing. Craig and David went to Cty K to check there. I could not imagine having lost them anywhere else. I texted that they should check near the sign where I did the self timer because I thought I had had them in the fanny pack with the camera. After a good breakfast of blueberry pancakes and bacon and a hike up to a spot high up where we could overlook the river, we set off. The freshness of the morning was quickly tempered by bright sunshine and I was wavering between taking off my fleece vest and taking it off. Eventually, I paddled in shirtsleeves. Roux decided at one point that he would take a little walk and seemed very surprised that walter would not carry him. He was happy that I did not abandon him and jumped back into the canoe from shore. Mellie seemed to be shaking her head at this young whippersnapper. Saw quite a few parties paddling, a rowing boat with muskie anglers. Quite a few campers at Howell Landing. This is only the second time that we encountered other campers during our fall trip. I vaguely recall a pair of kayaks next to a tent on the Flambeau many years back. Camp 16.5, the first site past Howell landing turned out to be a winner. Beautiful sights of the river, hiking opportunities and plenty of firewood.

Gorgeous afternoon departure after self-timer photo at Cty K Landing. Shortly before taking off, I recognized the landing a the departure point of my very first Namakgon tri, with Lynn, almost a quarter century ago. It came to me when David asked whether I had ever shuttled by bike, which we had done for that Memorial Day trip in 1991. Was a little leery of soloing my fully loaded canoe, but it turned out to be no problem. The Woodsman III is quite nimble and very responsive. the few riffles posed no challenge. Lovely landscape in golden late afternoon light. We decided on the group site, a good choice. Made my ribeye steak sandwiches for dinner. Surprised Craig, who had had his birthday on the previous day with a torte fromCafe Late.

Another cool morning. Was wearing some medium duty xc ski gloves and glad for it. Gorgeous easter sky and bright moon light for this nice commute. Painfully slow crossing of downtown. A fast young guy on a fixie past me and vanished into the downtown maze. A couple of blocks later, I caught up with him again, he was just as encumbered by DT traffic as I ...

CLT closure is turning me into a winer: such a pain to make way through DT traffic and lights. I much prefer the extra couple kms without traffic lights. Solid 7 minutes to make it out of Downtown. Cut through S St. Anthony and the Newell Park neighborhood again, to avoid the stiff headwind.

We checked out the works on Snelling Ave. They were laying down fresh blacktop in the right-hand lanes. Mellie and Roux were greeted by some of the wokrers like long lost friends. I asked, sounds like the remainder will be done tomorrow. We'll see ...
