Biking Commuting 39:53 intensity: (2:45 @1) + (6:25 @2) + (20:26 @3) + (4:03 @4) + (6:14 @5) 18.14 km (2:12 / km) +71m 2:09 / km
ahr:142 max:165 shoes: All-City Space Horse

Beautiful but chilly morning, rather colder than yesterday. Did not mind. When I got on Cedar Lake Trail, a young guy on a light-looking carbon number passed me. I couldn't even keep up with him drafting. But, as I rode along, I closed the gap, pulling just abut even with him when he went straight onto Kenilworth and I took a right onto N Cedar Lake Trail.
11 AM

Hiking 21:24 [1] 2.15 km (9:57 / km) +19m 9:32 / km

Beautiful walk around Brownie. Even saw some turgescent buds. On the other side of the lake, two boys were fishing and throwing rocks on what little ice was remaining. They hadn't caught anything yet, not sure if that was on account of their throwing rocks or because the water may still be a bit too cold.
3 PM

Biking Commuting 36:22 intensity: (1:40 @1) + (4:24 @2) + (21:56 @3) + (6:14 @4) + (2:08 @5) 18.14 km (2:00 / km) +90m 1:57 / km

Just a gorgeous afternoon to be riding a bike. A very gentle NW wind helped things along just a little bit. Good speed. Had a very slow cyclist ahead of me on sidewalk heading S on Snelling. But hey, I could draft :-)

Strength: Flexibility 30:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (8:00 @2) + (2:00 @3)

Garmin seemd to save but file was corrupt, hence manual entry. Regular leg stretches and upper body strength routine for 1/3, then therapy exercises for hip.
4 PM

Hiking 30:16 intensity: (21:10 @1) + (6:51 @2) + (2:09 @3) + (6 @4) 3.58 km (8:27 / km) +27m 8:09 / km
ahr:116 max:154 shoes: Nike Air Pegasus+ 29 Trail WR

The perfect day. Turned around from my bike ride home and went out with the pooches. Switched between jogging and walking.

ahr:139 max:158 shoes: All-City Space Horse

Good morning for a ride! Above freezing, even if only a couple degrees, makes getting dressed for the ride so much easier.
3 PM

Biking Commuting 52:42 intensity: (3:46 @1) + (14:32 @2) + (30:31 @3) + (3:47 @4) + (6 @5) 21.6 km (2:26 / km) +138m 2:22 / km
ahr:137 max:158 shoes: All-City Space Horse

Coffee run to Dunn Bros. Did it in the afternoon because I start for work too early for them to be open. Always a nice change from the routine though I must say I like the morning version of this better because of low traffic levels. Marshall was backed up from Cretin to the Lake Street Bridge. Glad I wasn't headed up that way.
5 PM

Hiking 35:25 [1] 3.26 km (10:52 / km) +33m 10:20 / km
ahr:98 max:114 shoes: Nike Air Pegasus+ 29 Trail WR

Beautiful evening in shorts and t-shirt. Dogs liked it, too. Had a chance to inquire about the containers lined up along the tracks. Sitting just on the ground. There was a RR guy unloading another one. They contain varipus parts for level crossings, etc that are needed to make repairs.

Morning of working on the van. Put in the cell phone mike that I forgot when I put in the new radio with bluetooth. Also, replacing brake light that was out. Then cars to oil change, but that did not involve biking, only some on-leash training for Roux, especially heeling.

Kind of a slog, agains the wind. Not too many fellow bikers out there, either. Put a new tire on my rear wheel yesterday, again a Conti Ultra Gatorskin 700x32, which had served me well the first time around. First time out on this tire. The one on the front wheel is still hanging in there.

Lost one of my gloves Friday, on way home from Moscow on the Hill happy hour. Back-tracked and found it at Western and Blair! There was a young couple loading old bikes into a convertible, just piling them up. He called out to me asking what kind of All City bike I have. We chetted some, turns out they have a bike shop at University and Grotto, http://www.cyclesforchange.org/. Had planned to get some croissants at Trung Nam French Bakery and forgot they are closed on Sundays. Went to Bread & Chocolate at Victoria and Grand instead.

ahr:121 max:138 shoes: All-City Space Horse

First flat for the Space Horse.
The bad: pinch flat in pothole at Snelling to Como exit ramp. I know the pothole, probably the only serious pothole during my entire commute, right where the concrete from the bridge changes to asphalt. But I did not want to swerve in the path of the car on my tail. Tire likely under inflated, did not check pressure after 3 month winter break. Tire on its last leg after 5500 km of hard riding. Was thinking last fall that it needed replacement.
The good: 7300 km with one flat tire. Only 2 km from home, was able to jog back, pushing the bike. Cyclocross wheel set hanging on the wall, switch out wheel, pump up and ride to work! 2 km of extra biking and 2 km of extra jogging to log!

Running 12:06 intensity: (28 @1) + (19 @2) + (4:08 @3) + (5:56 @4) + (1:15 @5) 2.1 km (5:46 / km) +16m 5:33 / km

Second attempt, it worked. The cyclocross tire rolled surprisingly well.

Hiking 17:04 [1] 1.38 km (12:22 / km) +21m 11:30 / km

First time around Brownie. Almost didn't happen. As I approached the security desk I noticed I was missing my badge. I backtracked but couldn't find it. So I ate my lunch instead and by the time I had finished, I got an email from security that someone had dropped off my badge.
Wow what a difference from last year, when the water was so high that it was impossible to walk around the lake. The tunnel to Cedar Lake had maybe 1.5 m of clearance. This year It looked more like 2 m and the trails were high and dry. Again, makes me wonder about an impending drought.
3 PM

Running 27:49 intensity: (15:47 @1) + (10:10 @2) + (1:52 @3) 3.59 km (7:45 / km) +30m 7:26 / km

Moving from hiking to jogging: hiked part and jogged part, alternating about 0:30-1:00 each. Since I do this right after bike commuting home, my legs are a little tired.

First bike ride of the season and first commute for this fair weather cyclist, a full two weeks earlier than last year. Had everything laid out so I did not have to rush around this morning. Found St. Anthony Falls tame compared to last year, when the river roared. I wonder about the drought potential. A few bikes out, took advantage of the newly completed bike trail along the river. Nice. Early on the Cedar Lake Trail, I closed in on a fatty who seemed to want to challenge me to a race. Not sure why, I passed him without straining. As I pulled abreast with him I heard him hiss under his breath "Speeding ticket, speeding ticket." Made me wonder whether he was a cop or something. The rest of the ride was uneventful.
4 PM

Biking Commuting 45:48 intensity: (11:56 @1) + (25:18 @2) + (7:19 @3) + (24 @4) + (51 @5) 18.01 km (2:33 / km) +143m 2:27 / km
ahr:127 max:164 shoes: All-City Space Horse

Had to work harder against the wind on the way home. Stopped to take a picture of frozen Cedar Lake where I donned my windbreaker, which I had foolishly packed in my bag. Then liquid but demur St. Anthony Falls. Roads and trails had been swept, which was nice. Good first commute, I'd say. Timing for both rides very similar to last year.

Note

We are getting a ride with Tranquility Bay Resort's (TBR) airport boat for a day at that place. It appears to be possible to wade/swim out to the reef at this location. Swimming Open Water 34:08 [1] 0.5 km (1:08:16 / km)

Daytrip to Tranquility Bay Resort. Took their boat from San Pedro, returning from some of their guests' Shark Alley trip. Took about half an hour. I was surprised about the amount of development along the shore. It had thinned out by the time we got to the tranquil resort. At lunch and headed for the water. Waded through some thick sargassum to where the water was open. TheN-S current along the shore was strong, so we decided to take a couple of their kayaks which they had kindly offered. Paddled to and mored at a buoy neer a reef and snorkled a bit, heading back towards shore after a short while. The current was just too strong, even with flippers. Still saw a variety of fish in some rather murky water. Saw the dreaded invasive lion fish as well.

Went N along beach, along San Pedro River as far as I could and then hitting the lagoon as often as I could. Got a good peep behind the façade of San Pedro, which has a frontier feel anyway. Away from the touristy beach piles of garbage, shacks, poverty. They've had five killings already this year, likely drug trade related.

Zipping through San Pedro rush hour traffic, cops regulating at every intersection of the narrow streets. Glad we didn't take the golf cart. Went back along the beach, which was better traffic-wise and much more fun.

I guess I'm starting my spring training. Those stretches are sorely needed, especially my left hip, which is totally messed up.

Ran south, along the beach, back along the road, which was mostly dirt. Beautiful vistas, in spit of the beach being pretty built up. A little worried about running in pretty strong wind under coconut trees but I was spared. Kicked it up a notch, hanging on to a bicyclist for about 1500 m. Not bad for my second day of running this year.

Swimming Open Water 40:00 [1] 0.7 km (57:09 / km)

Lots of fish again, they had moved out from under the pier into the open. The waves? Tides or moon phase? no idea. But it's time to get out to the reef. However, the persistent trade winds at 30 km/h limit snorkling. I do see the waves breaking over the reef from the beach. looks pretty hairy.

Seeing the town waking up. Sulfury smell in the air from rotting kelp along the beaches.

Used The Palms' bikes to go to grocery store and ride across the bridge with Lynn and James. Roads are busy with bicycles, pedestrians and golf carts. Later in the day we saw a bicyle race coming thorugh (today is a bank holiday, the National Heroes and Benefactors Day), a rag-tag bunch of bikes. Fun!

Swimming Open Water 30:00 [1] 0.5 km (1:00:00 / km)

Barrier reef is too far out to swim to or even paddle to on this windy day. But the wooden piers along the beach provide plenty of fish to look at. Beautiful and fun.

First dip in local waters, amazing numbers of fish just a few strokes off the beach and even without a reef in clos proximity.

Canoeing River 2:05:00 [1] 10.82 km (11:33 / km) +9m 11:30 / km

Rain this morning. As soon as it stopped, we shoved off and had a good tripdown the river. Based on the 2:30 to 3:00 hrs prdicted by the lodge staff, I estimated 2:00. Very close. Beautiful, dense forest and bluffs, several types of king fisher and herons. A rail. Fish beneath the surface of the clear water. As we got closer to San Ignacio, we overtook a few canoes from a neighboring resort. It started to rain within 10 minutes of landing between the two San Ignacio bridges. Lunch, visiting the weekly market and then to Xunantinich mayan ruins. Quite impressive, also looked like a well managed site. Not many people there, which was nice.

First jog in a long time. Some good climbing, took it very easy. Jogged most of the way in total darkness. I saw something like a bicycle reflector moving about. Turned out it was a patch of iridescent feathers of a bird the size of a robin caught in my headlight. Very cool! Beautiful view from the top.

Hike to ATM cave entrance. I would have posted a ton of cool pictures of our 4 hr. caving excursion to Actun Tunichil Muknal (or ATM caves), but since some idiot dropped his camera and crushed the skull of a sacrificial victim, no cameras allowed.

3:30 hrs in ATM cave. Very cool, about 1/2 of it wading and even swimming in underground river. Glad this wasn't in one of the Belgian caves, where water and air temps are around 58C. Lots of artefacts, sacrificial victims, rock formations. very cool! We went in about 800 m and came out the same way. Many stops for explanations from excellent guide Manuel, who sounded a little like one of those history channel narrators.

In light of the upcoming tropical vacation and the warming trend for the next week likely the last ski of the season. But at -20C it was as if winter wanted to tell me "I'm not done with you yet!" Skiing on sandpaper covered Styrofoam, crunchy and slow. Had hoped to keep working on my V2 but the effort with every leg push and pole required me to do most of my skiing in V1 this morning. Not quite closing the book on this Nordic ski season but seeing the writing on the wall.

Very different from yesterday morning: mild, moist and overcast. A few more skiers. Worked on my V2, taking advantage of the softer corduroy. No deer. Snow started gently in the middle and it really came down by the time I left. Good little workout.

Much colder than expected. -11C in Backyard, -15C here at Hyland. Glad I had the shell mittens along. No deer this morning but a beautiful sunrise. Frost on trees and shrubs. Very few skiers. Chatted with a nic couple who just started when I left. Recent transplants from France. He is originally from Minneapolis but grew up and lived 30+ year in France. She is a Moroccan native.

Tried to go easy. Successful during first lap but then the horses just wanted to get out. Followed a young skier with beautiful technique for a lap and tried to emulate. Then another two laps doing this on my own. V2 whenever the grade allowed. I am getting over my right leg quite well, left side not so much, but it is improving.
Today was one of the few days where classic skiers outnumbered skaters by a lot. LNR was out in force, all age groups and pretty much everyone was striding. Was just thinking that I hadn't seen any friends today when I saw a whole Endurance United crew striding, getting ready for the Pepsi Challenge next weekend: Kitty, Heather, Margie, Robin and Matt (who was skating). Big hoopla and hellos! Very fun!
They were checking passes today, I was wearing mine.
