Picked up Karl early because we were shooting for a 7:00 AM start time to avoid heat and crowds. We did the same as last Saturday, from Hadley parking lot to McKusick Rd. and back. Seemed like many had the same idea about the heat, it was rather busier than last week. I worked on hips forward where I could and also paid attention to having my weight towards the front of my foot. This way, I seem to accelerate without expanding more energy. The effort seems light but later, I do feel that my legs are tired. Not sore, just tired. Another observation is that I have a much easier time keeping my HR in L1. The drive home had us avoid traffic backups. Glad to get there.

Sultry but not yet warm. Lovely linden blossom scents at various occasions. typical Friday morning commute, maybe even more so because it's just before the holiday week: not much traffic at all.

Lovely weather on the way too work; after I arrived, it didn't take too long for the sky to get dark in the west. Always impressive to see weather coming in from our 36th floor vantage.

Still no rain, worked up a sweat while walking slowly. Stopped at the service berry bushes at Hamline U and enjoyed a few hands full. Mellie did too, but Roux was too preoccupied with rabbits in the understory.

Gorgeous morning for the extended ride via Dunn Bros. It's always the same motley crowd waiting for the shop to open. Had a perfect ride to the river, green lights all the way. During the few sunny patches, I noticed the heat, it will be a hot afternoon ride.

Quite a bit faster than usual, certainly in par thanks to a strong westerly wind. Was also following a strong young rider who was pedaling in jeans and without clips. Once again shows it's the motor and not the bike.

Excellent workout with Ben Popp in attendance. He got me to the next level of XC skiing. Most of the about 20 people in attendance were skate skiing, Karl, Mark and I stuck to classic. Ladder 4-5-6-6-5-4 in L3. I have to admit that I crossed into L4 a few times. We were done earlier than the skate skiers, who covered more distance in the same time. Made me think that we classic skiers should have done 5-6-7-7-6-5 instead.

Gatetway-Browns Creek Skate LSD. Karl and I decided on Gateway for the morning, 2 hour L1 workout. No pole warm up and cool-down on either end. What a gorgeous morning! From Hatley Ave lot to McKusick Rd. and back. McKusick is always hard to cross on roller skis because of bump on both ramps. So we went S on McKusick to get to the 1 hr turn around. Trail was getting a little busy on the way back, as usual. Saw neighbor Steve, getting ready for a bike ride when we came back.
2 PM

Biking: Trail (Old Cedar Bridge-Black Do) 1:23:58 intensity: (11:44 @0) + (1:08:15 @1) + (3:44 @2) + (15 @3) 17.54 km (4:47 / km) +34m 4:44 / km
ahr:113 max:154 shoes: All-City Space Horse

Rode with Lynn, Peggy & Joel. Chatted with a Natl Forest Service game warden at the Old Cedar Bridge parking. He said the bike trail along Black Rock Rd. was still full of debris from the floods but that the road itself was free of obstructions. We crossed the bridge, amazing, last time I had seen it in April, the water level was just short of flooding the deck, now, the river was about 4 m below. We tried to go on the river bottoms trail but on road tires, it was a slog. We crossed the river via the new Cedar Ave bridge and then turned onto Black Dog Rd. Indeed, the road was free but dried mud on the bike trail. The trail was closed but we went anyway. We made it all the way To MN Riverfront Park and then turned back.

Glorious evening and motivated group. Margie, Heather and Jake provided training. The plan was to go to the top and turn back to the bench, about halfway between top and bottom or about eight minutes. I couldn't do it in 8:00 so I clicked the lap button at 8:00 and looked at the watch at the bench, which was between 9:30 and 9:45. Excellent workout.

Earlier than usual, nice and cool, little wind. Surprising amount of bike traffic out there, including in the TPC locker room. I may be hitting the folks who are headed for an early run. Big crane on 10th, between Nicollet Mall and Marquette, traffic down to a single lane. I think they are installing the cladding on the new high-rise that went up on the block.

Started the walk after 9:00, the pooches had to pay for this with more on leash time. Busy father's day crowd on Como Golf Course. We are not affected/affecting but there is a tee where we emerge from the ridge trail bisecting the course. Somebody had just teed off and we scurried through, apologizing. as the next of the foursome was getting ready. He waved us off and complimented me on the dogs.

Delayed start of roller ski for an hour due to a passing front. Tom organized, he was already there. I came with Karl, Mike and Charlie joined, too. We did 3 x 10:00 double pole workout from Lilydale to Mendota. the last recovery, I did a no pole back to Lilydale with Karl correcting and making suggestions. Forgot my gloves on the ground as I got ready to get back on my bike after yesterday's lab visit. Not at the security desk nor in the lost and found box (a very big and full crate) in the Healthpartners admin offices. But I enjoyed the interactions and bantering I had. Started with my wet t-shirt which was dry by the time I got to HP and wet from sweat when I got home.

Very funny, as the serviceberries are growing in size, still green, though, the dogs have started to check their ripeness as we walk by. Like them, I can't wait for the berries to be black, soft and sweet.

Karl and I led a secession from the rest of the team (with coach Margie's approval and directions for activities), who were going to do dryland training at Battle Creek West. Karl, Ron, Anatoly, Mark and I headed for the dog park parking off Lower Afton. ~18:00 warm-up followed by 2 x 1:00 lock&load, 2 x load with follow-through and 2 x single sticking. I noticed quickly that one of my poles was still slipping. Realized that one ferrule was still pointing in the wrong direction. Intervals that way were a pain. Karl offered me his skate roller ski poles, One didn't even last a third of the way up, it splintered under load. So back to my poles for the 2.5 remaining intervals. I found through trial and error that if I poled close to the edge of the trail i would hit some rougher pavement offering better purchase. Still not ideal, but hey, better than hill bounding. A good workout, we were all glad to be on roller skis.

Lovely morning, bright and clear! It must be summer when 13 °C feels crisp. Crossing Stone Arch Bridge I noticed that the water temp must be warmer than the air temp on these cool mornings because a wave of warmth sweeps over me as I ride by. Surprisingly few cyclists out but then it's Monday, everyone must be sleeping in after an active weekend.

Lugged the big lens along without a chance to take any pictures. Had the walk to ourselves except for the woman with the big black and white dog. He and Roux had some fun again.

One of my favorite training routes: Onion River to Chequamegon Point Lighthouse to Houghton Point Lighted Buoy. Paddling across 7 km of open water is always an exercise in patience. perception of features ahead changes slowly, e.g. I mistook a gill net marker for the Houghton Pt. light and a little later I mistook the light for another gill net flag. After sitting an hour or so in a cramped cockpit, you start longing for getting up and stretching but a paddling workout is not about comfort, it's about pounding the distance. So you keep going, trying to maintain a decent rhythm and an even pace. Good workout on perfectly flat water, today.

Lovely morning, milder than expected. Was wearing a fleece vest, lost it pretty quickly. Only met one person, a young woman with a big black and white dog, the coloring like that of a Holstein and the size, too. He and hit it off, we needed to be careful not to be run over by those two.

First kayak outing of the year. Only about 10 km, want to ease into it. I certainly felt some muscles that hadn't been used in this particular way, specifically the ones I am sitting on.

Drenched my t-shirt before taking off, nice to start cool. At Stone Arch Bridge, I got clues that something was off. Cop cars with flashing lights on the bridge, more cop cars and fire trucks along the banks on both sides. Under the I-94 bridge, I stopped to take some pictures. I asked some onlookers if they knew what had happened. One pointed to another and said "this gentleman saw someone jump of the bridge." I had figured that it had to be something like this. Sad to get the confirmation.

Sunny, 29C
Took the kayak down from its perch on the garage ceiling and place it on top of the van, also started loading to be ready for my 4:00 AM departure tomorrow. See, I need to work and would like to start before 8:00 AM. Dogs seemed kind of hot, we made it just a short one. Hamline is hosting the HS state track meet, fun to see all these young athletes from all over the place. Not so fun to hear and smell all these buses idling in our neighborhood.

Thought we might squeeze in a short walk before the storm let loose. A very short one, indeed. Greeted a guy walking by as I was taking a pic of the storm clouds, thunder rolling in the distance. He mentioned that NOAA had posted flood warnings for the entire week. Had seen that, too and had found it very odd. By the time we got to Pascal, I felt the first drops, rounding onto the campus, it started raining and by the time we turned around the old law library, it was a downpour. We ran home.
