Wow, I wonder if there is something wrong with the thermometer: -1.1 °C all day long, including at the coldest time of the day, 5:00 AM. No complaints, preserves the snowpack, rather thin at this point. Wouldn't mind if the predictions for this weekend are on the low side. Ready for the December Surprise!

Home all day with a terrible headache and nausea. Starting to think it may be related to my reading glasses. Needed to get some fresh air at the end of the day. Darkness impending, I made dogs wear their little blinky lights to make them more visible.

Milder, no wind, thus a fairly comfortable ride. Decided to try out a pair of winter work gloves for the ride, they were not as warm as the three finger mitts. Stopped on the DT side of the Stone Arch Bridge to take a picture. Had noticed the dawn sky in my rear view mirror and wanted to take advantage. Also, had an inkling and a hope this might be the last ride to work for they year.

Got a little earlier start this morning. Heard Cathy Wurzer say on MPR that it was milder than yesterday, as per the temps measured at MSP. I must disagree, in spite of ducking into South St. Anthony from the wind and wearing the same layers as yesterday, I perceived the weather to be colder and the temp measured by my Garmin probe confirmed that. Wind was similar to yesterday but felt stronger. Counted only five bikes.

Just couldn't see my self bounding hills at Battle Creek while snow is just a little farther away. Found a willing fellow rogue in Karl, who drove us to Elm Creek after having just returned from Bismark, ND this very afternoon.
Instead of 8 x 3:00 L4 bounding, I did 6 x 4:00 L4 skate skiing. Started the interval at the bottom of the steep climb before returning to the Chalet and ended it just before the bridge to the tubing hill after finishing the donut. The rest of the lap was recovery, sort of. There were a ton of HS kids, including from Central HS in St. Paul! Great workout!

Had hoped to put in at least eight rides to work the month and here we go. Cold one, though, and heading straight into a cold and steady wind. But I was dressed for the occasion; besides my face, I felt pretty cozy. On CLT, I saw the young woman walking her lab, heading the same direction as me. The lab startled, because he hadn't heard me approach. I said a friendly word to the lab and then mentioned to the woman how much I enjoy seeing her walk her lab every morning, and that I know that my dogs are waiting for me doing the same thing after I come home. From her response, I could tell that she appreciated that comment. another cyclist was pushing through the gate into TPC courtyard, noticed he was riding the newest version of the All City Space Horse. we chatted a little, after layers were removed I saw he's one of the regulars in the locker room, Nate. Funny how you see each other every morning and never exchange more than a greeting.

Colder again, wet sand has frozen up, reserving yesterday's tracks. Recognized my own and the dogs' among them many others. It will take some time for the icicles and ice crusts to grow again, but there is a start. Had the wind on my tail on the way to the Sioux and in my face on the way back. Roux and I took the RR grade for the return, a little more shelter from the wind and also to check it out, hadn't hiked it in some time. There were some tracks coming towards us but they did not go through all the way. Had been worried a little about the swampy parts but we made it through with dry feet.

Started rather late today, courtesy of the dreary weather. It rained all day and when we started today's walk, the rain had just started to change into snow. On McCulloch, we crossed paths with big ol' lab Cody and his owner, retired Madeline Island ferry skipper Joe Newago. Joe was driving his van, Cody waddling ahead. Roux startled Cody, who ran into the stopped car. I asked Joe if he had gotten his deer, he said he did and followed up wistfully that it was probably going to be his last one. Next week, they were going to put the house on the market. He wasn't getting around that well anymore and his wife even less so. They were looking for a place in Washburn. This made me sad, having gotten to say hi to Joe almost every time I walked that route. We walked down Potters Road a little and then down to Friendly Valley Beach and back home, where we arrived after dark. Even in the fading light we could tell that there wasn't much left of nature's ice sculptures. But by the time we got home, the temps were back below freezing.

Mild above freezing temps, just one car by the trail head when I arrived. Plenty of snow cover, skate surface had some sparse vegetation poking through, really just the odd stalk of some herbaceous or thin shrub. Also, the odd bare spot in the tracks, easy to avoid by stepping out and stepping back in. Started with Telford, then onto Sugarbush. Jolly Long was rolled but not tracked and generally firm. Good coverage even under the high pines and the few soft spots were frozen over. Climbed up Anchor and started down Seagull but turned back after 100 m or so, it was rolled, but too soft. So Anchor to the downhill area. Stopped for a quick chat with another skier who was using Anchor as his workout track. Swiss Miss was rolled and looked in good shape but I decided to turn back to put a few more km in. Checked out the bottom part of Roller Coaster which is the return option for Swiss Miss/Anchor. Looked good, maybe tomorrow.
This was hard work, confirms that it is important to train in less than ideal conditions and not just on the man-made loops, which tend to be always close to perfect.

Nice walk, interesting to see how the beach has changed in the past two weeks. Where there were only a few icicles before, there is now a thick crust. The beach was easy to walk on, frozen sand, solid as concrete. Dog and man not leaving any tracks. Saw only a few diving birds at a distance, loons or mergansers, too far to tell. Met some of our neighbors, who were out with their dogs to enjoy the morning sun, just like me. Dogs politely sniffed each other, except for the poodle, who had to be kept close.

Three Rivers added about 700 m of trail since last Saturday, nice! Not quite as busy compared to last time but still a good showing. Both Greggs were there, with another person in team outfit. What impresses me about Caitlin is how she stays in L1. I have to keep checking myself from not going all out. I had good intentions to make this a consistent L1-L2 workout but the glide was so nice, I just had to move. When I caught up with Karl, I stayed with him for the second hour. that was L1-L2! Definitely have my ski legs back.
I was considering switching to classic but there were quite a few leaves in the track. So I kept with skate. Did a couple laps double poling and a couple laps no poles.

Had to get out after the turkey meal. Dogs needed their walk to, also wanted to make sure they didn't get into any mischief while waiting in the car and they would have another 4 hrs in the car for the trip north. Interesting topography in this neighborhood, aptly called Cedar Ridge towering over a valley that's a good 20 m below. There are some woods across from the high school, posted with no trespassing signs. It's a pity to keep peaple out.

Feeling much better this morning, headache and nausea abated. Suspect it was a migraine. Because the weather is milder, I dropped a layer and forewent the boot covers, stopping by Dunn Bros for the weekly bean allotment. From there towards the river on Summit. After about half an hour of riding, the cold started creeping into my shoes, should have worn those boot covers. Stopped a couple times for pictures, capturing dawn above the river. Always tricky to do this without a tripod, we'll see how they turn out.

Manager said we should go home after we had done we needed to do. She left first. Steady headwind, I wasn't pushing it, so it was a slow ride. Stopped on Stone Arch Bridge again to look at the growing ice sheet. Amazing, for this time of the year. Mesmerizing how the current pushes ice fragments under the ice. Passed another rider who was going much slower on the Snelling Bridge across the tracks on the dirt stretch at the Energy Park Ramp. Of course, after that he accelerated. and kept up until I took the exit onto Pierce Butler. I checked for him on the streets crossing Holton and saw him a block and one half away on Hewitt, in the middle of Hamline Campus. It appears that he didn't keep up the pace after we split, while I was just doing my regular thing.

Just a few snowflakes in the air at 5:00 AM and dry pavement signaled the ability to bike. Not too much competition from fellow riders, nor from runners, for that matter. First bike in at TPC, not sure that has ever happened before, even though I am third or fourth on a fairly regular basis. Riding over the Stone Arch Bridge, I noticed ice accumulating in the big eddy by the hydro power plant. Above the falls, it almost looked like ice was almost solid enough to make it across the river dry, not that I would try. Curious to see what will remain after the forecast warm-up and before winter is here for good. Or is it already?

Cold, flurries, clam from bike ride home and getting dark. Wanted to be done for the day so we hurried. No objection from my four-legged friends even old Mel was full of zest, as if she wanted to show me that she is still faster than me climbing the RR embankment. Guy delivering food at Hamline U obviously a dog lover, greeted them. At home, a Hamline student got assistance from a security guard unlocking her car. Got the email from Three Rivers that loop is open (I immediately renewed my pass), Aaron N posted about it on FB and Karl wondered if I would join him. How could I resist? Saw various acquaintances and friends, (Jamie, Joseph, Jake, Tom, Aaron) and an olympian (Caitlin). As usual, conditions were super fast, whatever was left on my Fishers was right on. They work better on the firm artificial snow deck anyway. Put down a solid 17+ laps for almost 23 km. definitely not an LSD, this was a threshold test. Hard to hold my horses in those beautiful conditions, that overdistance has to wait for another time ... Body inventory: gone are the day of early-season shin splints, I guess my technique is coming along. Had some metatarsal cramping starting in my left foot later during my workout, but that dissolved after a couple of laps. Left knee was a little achy around that same time, but that went away, too. Legs are nice and tired now.

Lovely afternoon walk, meant to do only the short one but decided to extend to Lexington. We hiked along the track in full daylight, something I don't like to do anymore because the RR security has gotten sharper. But no lack SUV today, only a big (and I emphasize big) racoon climbing a tree. Amazed that the dogs didn't see it, especially Roux, who picks up a squirrel sitting motionless in the shade at a distance. When I saw it moving first, I thought it was a coyote, until it started going up the tree. tried to get a pic, but there were still leaves on this one, concealing the bandit.

While the wind had dried up much of last night's precip, there were plenty of treacherous looking glistening spots visible. Accordingly, my cycling was on the conservative side. A cold westerly wind was an added factor but all in all, not a bad ride. Not much competition from fellow cyclists but UMN ROTC were out in force. They were rather spread out and not in the way. Opted for the RR service road rather than river right, where the boardwalk is being refurbished. That boardwalk isn't such a great option in frosty weather anyway. Downtown had surprisingly heavy traffic for no apparent reason, I had a pacer in a bus that was going slower than I would typically go, but since it made all the lights, I was happy for the escort.

Mostly running. I mixed up some safflower and sunflower seeds and filled up the bird feeders still feeling rather clammy from the bike ride. Dogs had been waiting for me in the backyard, too, so we were all motivated to get ourselves warmed up with some vigorous activity. We kept at it during most of our circuit. Warm by the time we made it back home.

Cautious because of fear for icy patches, I took off. The few on the neighborhood roads were easy to avoid, the thicker ones were in deep shade at the bottom of Dinkytown Greenway and the northernmost portion of CLT, all easy to cross. Stopped to take a pick of the Hennepin Ave Bridge and the red/white/blue Grainbelt sign, then again, of the snow on CLT. Good ride, considering a decent headwind and the many stops.

Comfortable temps, should have probably dressed down a little. Some of the snow off the road bridges crossing CLT had melted but not all of it. Other than that, the coast was clear. Opted for the Stone Arch Bridge variation since the boardwalk is closed. Found that the RR service road was ice free as well. Made good progress, probably thanks to a little tailwind.

Met the nice lady who told me she had an eight pound hound, turns out I misunderstood, it's an 80 pound hound. She just said hi to the dogs. They only had one thing on their mind, running around in Energy Park, sniffing stuff out. Lots of traffic at Snelling and energy Park Drive stop sign, must have been th queue of cars taking off after a train crossed the road near the readi-mix plant. They saw us and we crossed without a problem. At least a dozen rabbits hopping around on Hamline U campus. That's where Roux's pointer heritage really shines, he picks up even those lurking in the shadows.

Had more time this morning to get to train. Colder by thermometer, but no wind, felt comfortable. On train, there was an altercation between an African-American guy and a mixed-race couple. He was letting off on how unjust life is for blacks while lifestreaming himself to social media and the black woman in the couple countered him. First time I saw a ticket check in the morning, though they did not want to check my ticket. They were evicting homeless people at the Nicollet Ave station. They also calmed down the angry man.

This was supposed to be a hill bounding workout. Karl, who had already gotten a taste of skiing on snow last weekend at Como suggested we should give it a try on the sports fields. We walked out and found the conditions satisfactory. Did about 15 laps in 1:25. Karl made multiple references to the trolls grabbing our skis, indeed,I went down once courtesy of a stuck ski. Margie said we should have let her know, but having 20 skiers on a couple inches of snow would not have been wise. I was handicapped by heavy Landsem skis, I was amazed I could skate them throughout. Must be close to a record, being out this early on skis.

Back to winter mode, very early. Getting used to hitting my departure time just right, to have that comfortable 10' walk/jog window. Today, I had to run the entire way; it's a good thing I did because the train was on time. The head carriage had every seat occupied by homeless people but the middle one had open spots. I am quite convinced that the snow and ice will be melting again before winter starts for good but for the time being, I'll be taking the train.

Reverse of the previous day, and trespassing. Switched out the SD card on the trail cam, just because i was curious and because I want to make sure it's working. Haven't looked yet but there are 58 pictures counted, when I left it yesterday, there were just 15. I suspect it's just pictures of me. A fun walk, mostly XC between McCulloch and Smith Fire Lane. a lot of deer tracks crossing the lane but not in the woods. On Kjarvick, we encountered Cody and his 84 year owner, both inside the van. he stopped to chat, said he saw our track coming out, but not going in. I confessed to my trespass to cross into the public woods, he didn't seem to mind but mentioned being excited about the upcoming deer hunt. Also thought this was a long walk. Lovely walk along the beach, catching some sun, which still packs a punch. Not quite winter yet, in spite of almost half a foot of snow. measured 15 cm. on the picnic table at the beach. Water tem still at 4.6 C, cold enough to lose mobility, should I fall in.

Started the day with chores, shoveling driveway, testing leaf blower and bringing in more fire wood. Then our usual walk from Onion to Sioux. Natural ice sculptures galore. In spite a smooth lake surface, there were gentle swells building and washing up on the beach, I had to be mindful, got splashed above my boots a few times when crouching down to take a pic. Dogs are definitely getting used to the white stuff, especially Roux can frequently be seen in a headless ostrich position, his entire head buried in some drift, sniffing out a mouse or some other tasty morsel. Mellie is super sore from yesterday's long walk, I think even the ability to go for these is nearing an end. We had some good times together, skijoring, 30 km runs and long cross-country hikes. There are still those shorter outings, 3-5 km or so. She did fine this morning.

Dressed lightly in spite of colder temps, just a thin fleece under my unlined parka. Cheap gloves from Menards were the weak spot. After reaching the Sioux first via the beach and then by RR grade, I headed up Kjarvick where we encountered Cody's owner driving by in his van. he gave us a friendly wave. Then down Potters and into the woods. Came back onto Smith Fire Lane near the corner with the clearcut where I headed down its eastern boundary and the followed on top of the little creek valley towards McCulloch. From there, through the back 40 home. Not too much snow yet but icy spots. It's snowing pretty hard right now.

A truly nasty morning, snow-rain mix, then just cold rain. Didn't help that I was wearing my leaky Hokas and my 20-year old Cabela's Gore-Tex parka, which is also at the end of its waterproof life. A while ago, the parka would have shrugged off the gold rain while the the Hoka's claim to keeping rain out had always been a joke. But the walk was not without its charms. excited for any sign of snow and the end of fall still had some colors in store. Since they are working on the boardwalk by Mill City Ruins, I am riding on the St. Anthony RR service road, there seems to be an issue with the 10th Ave Bridge, the service road is closed on either side of the bridge and diverted past the end of the track.
