Crew this morning was John, Mike, Tom, Andy, Elizabeth and Britt. chatted with Britt, whom I had not seen since last winter. Sounds like she had a good summer, including a BWCA trip with Wilderness Inquiry.
5 x 2:00 double pole, 5 x 2:00 single stick. No-pole warmup and cooldown. So much better than last week's workout, which was hot and humid. Even had some oomph left for the ride home. There were deer grazing trailside, a fawn, two does and a buck. Some more deer were down the trail, at one time one came towards us through the E 7th Street tunnel. Thought better of it and turned around.

In much better shape than after last Saturday's very hot and muggy workout. Took it easy, though. there was a noticeable southerly wind and I wondered what that would do to the TC Marathon runners tomorrow. Stopped at Trung Nam first, for some croissants, and then for the weekly dose of beans, at Dunn Bros. Back across the Aldine St. pedestrian bridge with a nice tailwind.

Cool morning, wearing long sleeves, should have worn gloves, too. Note to self: dig out the cool to cold weather riding stuff, it's just a matter of weeks before I'll really need it. Hopefully a very snowy winter close behind. UMN Army ROTC had a fitness test on Dinkytown Greenway, glad to say that they kept to one side as well. So did a large running group on the river trail. Surprised to see a sharp drop in cyclists on the trails, wondering whether the many folks I saw the last couple of days got it out of their system or if it's the Friday effect, with many people heading out of town. Took it easy this morning, playing around with my camera instead of riding hard.

Opted to not put an extra layer on (over my bike jersey) and was just fine, probably thanks to the brisk walking pace. Nothing out of the ordinary, starlings are congregating on the transmission pylon near Snelling and Energy Park Drive. I love when they all take off at once.

Lovely morning, left home when I hope to get going, around 6:10. In spite of the earlier start time, there was much action along the trail. Like yesterday, many more cyclists than usual, including some folks who seemed to be new to cycling, like one guy going very slowly in the middle of the path and moved left when I called "passing on your left." No offense taken here, nor from the UMN running team members doing hill reps on Dinkytown Greenway, a large group about equally balanced between the genders. What I like about them is how they stick to one side of the trail, leaving ample space for passing. A little bit of a headwind, but thanks to a temporary allway stop sign where I leave Glenwood for 10th St, I made all lights. Yesterday I checked with security, apparently they are waiting for some parts to fix the north gate to the TPC courtyard. Now I'm used to it and come in from the alley off Marquette instead of stopping in vain.

No sun but a warm afternoon. Again, quite a bit of bike traffic. As I was turning onto the UMN Campus Connector, there was a swarm of bikes ahead of me. I rode my normal pace and noticed that I was only slowly gaining ground on two young guys who were obviously enjoying the afternoon. They were swerving left and right, one of them rode a lot with no hands and still, they made good pace. I caught and passed them and then the chase was on. I build some distance once we were north of Energy Park Drive, but I had to work at it.
Gear note: low battery warning light on my headlight came on, so I recharged it, and also the tail light at work.

A few blocks into our walk, I noticed that I had failed to switch out of my biking shoes. As you probably guess, these are very walkable bike shoes but nevertheless, they have SPD cleats and are quite stiff. I did not want to return home to change, so I kept walking, sounded like I was doing it in tap shoes. Saw one of the old profs take off on his bike, encounter him frequently on the Snelling bridge, he heading north, me, going home. State trooper parked on Hamline, a block S of Pierce Butler. Odd place to see one of them.

Coolest ride thus far, under 10 °C, I think the previous low temp was 13 °C. Wearing a long sleeve tee and gloves this morning and glad for it. Also, no need for a cold shower to cool down, a warm one felt good. Many runners and cyclists out this morning, I think everyone is taking advantage of the nice fall weather after a few hot and a few rainy days. Almost hit a rabbit under Hwy 280 bridge, they are thick there, I do have my guard up and make hissing noises when I see one. Not a fast ride, because of a little headwind but I did hit all the DT lights, which is always fun!

Perfect weather, wish I was up north! But being here isn't that bad, either. The little lab I am walking past in Energy Park has the shades open more frequently. I am curious what they are looking at through their microscopes. Got a request to pet puppies at Hamline, always happy to oblige. One of the gals wasn't as excited, she said enough now, leave 'em alone now." Obviously not a dog person. dogs also met a tall sled-dog type pooch. I rolled out of bed at 5 AM to the sound of thunder rolling in a distance and between 5 and 6, there were some hefty showers. I was ready to ride the bike to the train station and hope for less rain in the afternoon. When I stepped out around 6:20, the rain had pretty much stopped. No excuse not to ride. there was enough road spray to get my feet wet but the rest of my body remained fairly dry, even drier than usual since I did not sweat as hard. There were even a decent number of cyclists out this AM, seemed there were more than runners. No complaints about being able to ride.

Filling my lungs with cool air, getting my heart pumping and working up a little sweat is just what you need after sitting all day on your rear end, pushing little buttons on a keyboard. Way to go.

Coffee at Dunn Bros and chocolate at Aldi. Annoying Somali guy was following me around the store, commenting on my purchases and wondering who I think would win the next supper ball. I asked him if it was something to eat. Then, in the Hamline Midway neighborhood, a stop sign vigilante noticed that I had not put a foot on the ground while slowing down and looking both directions, berating me for it. I wished her a good morning. But I have coffee and chocolate for the week, so life is good!

Lovely morning. Large cloud between me and the sun had a silver or rather golden lining. Quite a few people out this AM. Back-ups on the links at the golf course, looked like everyone and their grandpa were out. There was a race getting ready at the parking lot at Horton Av. and Midway Pkwy. While the temps were summer like, there is the scent of fall in the air, leaf litter on the ground and foliage getting thinner. Chatted up what looked like a father-son team getting ready to launch a homemade rc airplane, construction material poster board. son/pilot was fine-tuning some settings of the flight controller on a laptop while dad was holding the plane. I asked if they were aware of any rules regarding rc planes in St. Paul, he said that some parks were off limits but thought McMurray was OK.

Unusual start to ride into work this morning. Had noticed some salvage during walk with dogs a couple of days ago, a nice galvanized steel bucket and a couple of auger-style earth anchors in the middle of nowhere, apparently discarted. Yesterday, they were still there, somebody had kicked the bucket (literally), as there was a dent in it. I resolved to rescue the items from certain destruction, which I did this morning. After that, it was the regular ride to work with some road spray from the overnight rains. Quite muggy and a nice little tailwind. Was passed by another cyclist on River Pkwy and hung on (no drafting, he was going my regular pace) until he kept going straight on CLT and I turned off to exit to Glenwood Ave.

Lovely afternoon, no humidity left in the air and just the right amount of mild warmth. Taking back my idea of raingardens in the Hamline U front lawns. I don't know what they are doing or what they did, but when we walked by, they were grading and compacting the dirt.

Did not take full advantage of the nice tailwind because I started thinking about the recessed manholes everywhere. I don't know if others have this pet peeve but I hate when manholes are 4-5 cm below street level. I wonder always if there is a practical reason for this, like slowing down traffic or frost heave in our continental winters. I do suspect that this is much rather shoddy engineering or poor craftsmanship. I do not recall bouncing over manhole covers in Europe, especially i Germany, they wer so well integrated with the pavement that you hardly noticed they were there.

Another valiant effort. I think if I warm up before starting my ride to work proper, I may well be able to break 30 km/h average speed. 28.7 this morning, without putting that much of a effort into it and with a 1:00 wait for a light to change. No need for long sleeves this morning, either, and a cold shower was in order to cool me down and help me stop sweating.

Nice afternoon. Looks like Hamline U is installing rain gardens in their front lawn, along Englewood. I had noticed chalk markings on the lawns but didn't know whether they were might have been for football drills or some other purpose. Now I am thinking rain gardens because they align perfectly with the downspouts. A scintilla of doubt remains, because these will be Everglades-sized swamps.

Cool morning, wind had shifted to the west leaving a perfectly flat lake with no surf. There were a few jolly fishermen at the mouth of the Sioux, by the time I had made it back home and moved a large log using a peavey, they were driving up to try their luck in the Onion. Did a roller ski workout on the way home. Started by going NE and thought it pretty easy, starting with 20:00 no pole and 10:00 more for a 30:00 minute turn around. Boy was I wrong about this being easy, now skiing straight into the wind, especially on that first stretch after turning around. took me 3:00 longer to return to the van. From there I continued for another 15 minutes SW, turned around at the "dip" (barely noticeable on roller skis). Again, faster going NE. Did 7 x 2:00 double poling intervals, fartlek-style, i.e. not by the clock for the rest intervals, rather double poling each time there was a climb. Meant to stop at Hoist Lake for a quick dip after the workout and to feed the dogs. drove right by it. I think the NFS may have taken down the Moquah Barrens Auto Tour signs, did not notice any. So we drove home stinky, grimy and hungry, exploring a new route, going S on WI Hwy 35 from Siren. very nice and barely longer than the freeway.

Liz told me that it was currently possible to wade across the mouth of the Sioux, I planned to try to do that. Some guests of our neighbor Troy (awesome party, by the way, the night before!) were taking a morning bath. We hiked towards the Sioux, enjoying a spectacular morning sky and sunrise. A few raindrops, too. My first attempt walking across failed and returned to find a sturdy wading staff (a small tree, really) to probe the turbid and churned up waters for depth. That did it, we made it across but not past all hazards: quicksand, up to my knees. It's an eerie feeling to work against the suction of the sand to free your limbs, but it worked, slowly does it. Then on, towards he south end of the beach, past a pair of bald eagles and a mountain ash so full of berries that the branches were bending. Mellie and Roux made the acquaintance of the two boisterous goldens that live there. They are protective of their territory but were friendly once they noticed that we did not mean any harm. On the way back, we saw a surfer patiently waiting for swells at the mouth of the Sioux. He took off before we made it back across, giving up. I caught up with him at the parking lot. Blaise told me that yesterday, he caught a couple dozen nice waves. Great walk!

Humid and warm, dripping with sweat within a few km. Bear hunters out along Smith Fire Lane and Whiting. Encountered a group of MTB riders at the first intersection and asked "which way is up?" They pointed to one of the trails and I did not stop. Got to the power line near the top and Gull Trail on top but the CAMBA trail went back into the woods. I assumed it would move back to the top but instead, I started losing elevation fast. This was also a more advanced trail, more than I was comfortable with. I recognized being in one of the ravines I had moved up in and stopped, scrambling up the opposing side to check. Indeed, the trail up I was on earlier was just a few meters away from the one I was on now. Grabbed the bike and went up again, this time following the power line to Seagull and then to the top of the ski hill. People were just setting up food stations and I chatted with some, then took Swiss Miss downhill trail to the chalet, getting in line to buy my admittance to the big tap event. Had a fun time with Craig, and way too much food and beer.

Crossing Hamline U campus, I noticed a young woman with a knee brace. We were on parallel routes, hers slightly shorter but dogs and I were a little faster. Caught up with her near Klas Field and curiosity got the best of me, asked her what the matter with her knee was. ACL repair from last year, still giving her trouble this year. she was wearing a Hamline Hockey tee and told me that she played hockey and did track. Feeling lucky that my injury troubles only started in my mid-fifties.
Dogs returned to the site of their crime, or should I say victory, not even glancing at the carcass of the murder victim.

Target annual pep fest at the Xcel because the Target Center is being remodeled. Besides hearing news (positive for a change) from all our execs, we also got to see and hear some of the current Target partner artists, including Demi Lovato, Rachel Platten, Anastasia and a band called X Ambassador. I had to ask my colleagues who every single one was. Taylor Swift, whom everyone had been half expecting, could not make it and sent a video message.
Exiting the Xcel was surprisingly easy for such a large crowd. I had my bike parked right outside the door and headed for Ramsey Hill via W 7th. At a light, I fellow biker whom I had noticed at the parking wondered whether there was another way "to the top, besides the hill." I said "sorry" and that I did not know another. He turned out to be Andrew B, whom I cooperate with a lot via conference calls. I then powered up the hill and then enjoyed the rest of the ride, especially crossing I-94 via the Dunlap pedestrian bridge. Always nice to see how lovely it is on the bike when I could be in a car in heavy traffic on the freeway.

I meant to go to the demo event at TPC before getting onto my bike, but when I crossed the skyway at 10th I saw a line snaking around the building for admittance. So I just got on the bike. There were a good half dozen of them, and all were occupied by healthy looking poultry. When we entered the MN State Fair grounds at the north gate, a woman walking her dog warned us of all the tempting but possibly dangerous dog treats on the ground. Think chicken bones. Dogs got a little more fun this PM, Saw a group of young hobos camping out by the Energy Park Central Plant. They had a dog, which intrigued Roux. On top, there was a big swarm of starlings which took off as a cloud.

Lots of traffic on Ellis Ave, waiting to get onto Transfer Rd. Glad to be on a bike! Keeping in the neighborhood because of a decent headwind.

The usual coffee trip followed by my last (!) PT appointment. Nice ride during this cool morning. Since I was much later than usual, the area along the Mississippi was much busier, many runners and cyclists.

There was some sort of traffic blockage on Hennepin, between 10th and 11th. Tons of squad cars N bound traffic redirected W onto 11th to get onto Hawthorne. I was not affected much, police waved me and other cyclists through. Then there was a fire truck blocking the bike trail at Stone Arch Bridge, which I took because I could not stay on W River Pkwy. On the bridge, a long column of Segways obstructed bike traffic. After that, it was smooth sailing. Took my "normal" route home, to como and then S on Snelling, first time since the Fair.

Late summer temps, boys and girls at Hamline smiling at the dogs. Lovely afternoon. Had the furnace maintained recently, the tech found CO leakage from a busted core. Showed me the values inside the housing, which is not sealed. He also pointed out the amount of heat we're blowing out of our cheminee, 240 °C in the flue. I know that it's hot up there because my weather station reports above freezing temps on top of the house when the furnace kicks in. The sales guy showed up when I got home. I opted for a high efficiency solution, we will see how fast we will amortize.

Another cool morning, decided to wear light pair of gloves and no regrets. Starting ride under a full moon, beautiful! Stopped for a picture where Pierce Butler turns S into Transfer Rd. Always tricky to take shots of the moon. It will be overexposed ... Big running group out at Guthrie, crossing W River Parkway and trail to run down to the locks. Fortunately, I only caught the tail end. They even had a photographer.

Fast ride, with a light NNW wind, which did not feel like a tailwind. Unfortunately I forgot to turn on my HRM, so I'm estimating my intensity levels. Weird construction going on along Dinkytown Greenway, part of it blocked. I rode past the barriers this AM and couldn't see anything, neither could I looking past the barriers from both direction on the way home.

First walk after much more adventurous fare for the dogs. They were happy, though, so much to sniff and so much garbage, mostly leftovers from the State Fair. Made me sort of glad I missed the entirety of the Fair. Dogs lucked out too in that new students were arriving at Hamline. Two girls asked if they could pet the dogs. They were excited more about the sucker one of them was nursing. Luckily we avoided Mundraub (the taking food out of someone's mouth to eat it, a type of petty larceny under German law) and thereby were not banned from campus for life.

Wind always confuses me. It's supposed to come from generally one direction but in urban riding there are so many factors (i.e. mostly buildings and other structures) that influence it. As it was on my ride home. The general direction was NW but sometimes it felt like it was coming from SE. I made the best of it by enjoying anytime the wind seemed on my tail.

Sun was shining when I started, sky was looking dark out west. Only two people out this AM, one being my neighbor Mike, the other a young guy taking pictures of the sunrise at Bayview Park. He was using a slide-in filter with his camera, asked him what filter he was using. It was a graduated neutral density filter. I should try this some time. Neighbor Troy had is sailboat moored outside of his place. Noticed he was using a Zodiac-brand dinghy. Nice. After the walk, I started putting everything away, also removing the left-over twigs from the big branch that came down. Busy morning.

Saw loop at Mt. Ashwabay. First time I did the climbing prtion of this loop, a couple of times a steep switchback had me stalling. I stopped again at the bog terrain feature, this time I was better prepared and found it immediately I walked the circumference, it's quite large. Looks like a rich biotope. Thunder and lightning early morning but the rain stopped by 8:00. Took he dogs to the Sioux, coming by that assumed dog carcass, which was emanating a certain odor. Called the Bayfield DNR ranger's number after I came back, she picked up on the first ring. She said she'd check it out, and from the tone of her voice (no-nonsense law-enforcement type) I felt I could rely on her following through.

Went to pick up Craig in Washburn to paddle back to Bayview Park Rd. Told him I would call him from Houghton Falls so he could get to the put in. Water up to Houghton Point was calm, barely a ripple, certainly no waves. The wind occasionally picked up but I maintained a consistent speed of close to 9 km/h till Houghton Falls. Near Bodin's resort, I took a call from DNR ranger Amy, who told me that she had checked on the dead dog I had called in and that it had actually been a raccoon. She said she threw it in the bushes. Funny to have that conversation sitting in my 'yak on Lake Superior. I had actually checked as I paddled S to see if the carcass was still there. It was and I had secretly hoped that she had come by when I paddled past. Ten minutes later and I would have seen her.
As happened a few times before, waves an wind really picked up when I rounded Houghton Point, even more so when I continued past Houghton Falls, after giving Craig a heads up. I was paddling straight into 15 km/h wind, having waves roll over my deck and spray skirt. Someone else called, didn't take it because I was busy managing my ride. Last time I'm taking a phone along, at least without having it on mute.
As I approached Memorial Park, I saw Craig paddling toward me. He thought he might have needed a hand to get off due to the waves but had managed on his own. The paddle back was much easier, thanks to a tailwind and a somewhat slower tempo. Nice chatting with Craig along the way. Gave him a lift home from our place and stopped at South Shore Brewing for a Star Veil Saison, which, as expected met Craig's approval. We also tried the highly praised Diesel Bear honey blond which we both thought *independently* tasted of smelly socks. Tastes sure are different.

Lovely morning, exited through the back-40 and headed up McCulloch, then into the woods at the lot for sale. Dogs were super happy and so was I. Surprised that the blackberries aren't ripe yet, had fully expected to have missed them. Gory observation at Friendly valley beach, a dead carnivore, could be a small dog, but hard to tell. Just after seeing a note on a missing pooch. Other than that, just lovely!
