As I was getting ready to shut off my PC this morning, I heard some rumbling. Checked the radar and yes, there was a very localized blob of weather over Minneapolis, coming in our direction. I finished preparing for the day, packing lunch, wrapping my clothes in a plastic liner as the first raindrops fell. Decided to make a break for the light rail but when I entered the garage, the rain really let lose. So I headed back in and after checking the weather map one more time, decided to wait the rain out. It lasted only about 10 minutes but was hefty enough to refill the rain barrels. Rode the bike to work with not much more than road spray to contend with. I did have a minor spill when my front wheel slipped from under me at Glenwood and N 10th St, turning sharply onto the sidewalk ramp. Nothing hurt but my pride ...

Quiet ride home, many people must be already out of town. Partial cloud cover with blue sky and sun in between. At one point a smallish cloud dispensed a few heavy rain drops, just of few of them hit me. Odd.

I survived the dentist, who happens to be my friend Chuck. I think I should get a discount for not twitching, wining, asking for laughing gas or biting neither dentist nor his assistant. Always struck that the route via Como Ave (incl. the detour around DT) is shorter than my regular route.

Last walk for Roux before his heartworm treatment starts today. Dropping him off at the vets on way to work, after the first shot and then a second shot four weeks from now no exercise for a month. Brought Roux to the vet this morning to start heartworm treatment. His last physical activity for the next two months. He strained against the leash when I left the vet's office, very sad. As I was pulling out of the parking lot, the passenger in a black Dodge Charger fired a bottle rocket in my general direction. Whatever was left of it fell to the ground and I was a little worried that there might be a secondary explosion. Took some evasive action but the bang never came.

Nice ~5 km, fartlek format, speeding up every time a faster runner passed me. Not much in terms of hills near the Thames, except for stairways near the bridges.
I calibrated the altimeter before the run, the F3 is supposed to count floors like an activity tracker. It didn't but now it does. I also enabled GLONASS, reception for the Russian GPS network and indeed, it picks up satellites much faster now. Thus far, the F3 is turning out to be the best Garmin watch I've owned.

Walked from Lincoln's Inn Field to Churchill War Room museum by circuitous route. Toured the exhibits for a couple of hours, very good, but simply too much information to digest. Then to Parliament and Westminster Bridge, pat Downing Street. When I first was in London in 1979, you could still walk through Downing St., right past #10. Now, the entire road is secured by an iron gate and armed guards. The area around Big Ben was simply too congested with tourists, so we did not linger. Yesterday at 7:00 AM, it had been much better. Returning to Piccadilly to pick up some gifts and keepsakes, then back to hotel. Somehow, these long, slow strolls are harder on my legs and back than a run over twice the distance.

Had picked out this knoll that would afford a good overlook point. It is also adjacent to a quarry lake, which I wanted to check out. Success on the outlook front, my shameless trespass gave me a beautiful view of the surrounding area, 360 degree. Not so much on the quarry, which I could not see from my vantage point. Getting closer, I saw that the quarry was surrounded by a 10 foot high fence. I was able to outfox the fence, but not the strip of thorn bushes and brambles behind it. Oh well, just have to make do with the satellite image ... To make up for it, I tried out every meadow passage I could find and had sort off run on the wild side.

Less climbing but more distance. Navigation to Lamorna was simple but the stretch back was tricky, especially after I decided to take some foot and bridle paths. ended up in a boggy meadow and had to find my way out through some fields. But I made it. I do find exploring by running very enjoyable, I notice so much more than I do, even when compared to riding my bike.

One of our goals had been to hike from Newlyn to Penzance and back along to Coast Path. Today was the day, cool and overcast. Stopped in Paul to visit the church, stumbled over a Blewett grave (Lynn's family name) right outside the church door. Had a nice seafood lunch in Mousehole, the folks at the table next to ours were talking about Belgium. On to Newlyn Harbor along the coast. Observed the arrival of a fishing boat, and how they unrolled their seine net and carefully re-rolled it, presumably to be read for the next day. After a couple of shop visits we headed up the steep incline, back to our room for some rest.

Super morning, started with a gentle uphill and level, generally NW, thendropping into the Coombe Valley. I found a footpath that cut off a piece from the stretch along A30, which I wasn't particularly keen on running and I quickly got to B3315, along the Coombe creek. During that stretch along A30, I experienced some cramping in my right quads, which fortunately dissipated soon. It has a curb or a footpath along most of the road, and traffic was very light because of the early hour. I ran along the Strand for a short distance and then headed up the steep hill, taking mostly the same route as yesterday.

Nice run to Mousehole (pronounced something like "muzzle" by the locals) going down a narrow road via the hamlet of Paul, which sports an ancient-looking church. At one point, I had to stop to let a truck pass, which too the entire width of the road. Mousehole is a quaint little town right on the sea, we had looked into staying there but the Old Coastguard Hotel was already booked up. Then along the Coast Trail (yet again) back to Newlyn, not without first running along the seawall dead ending into the rocky shore. Over the last km, I climbed about 100 m in less than 10 minutes, a nice challenge and good L4 workout. Did a cool-down walk around the lawn, enjoying the many wild flowers which I recall from growing up in Belgium and am missing in Minnesota.

Nice walk along the rocky shore in St. Mawes, looking at every tidal pool we came across. Very nice, after we were in Truro, wher Lynn looked up some genealogy at the Cornish Family Research Society. Unfortunately, all she was able to do was to eliminate some leads. After dinner at Mackerel Sky back in Newlyn, we went for another walk, along the harbor basin. Checked out Jubilee Pool in Penzance, a 1930s saltwater pool which reminded me of the one I had previously visited in Monte Carlo. The Penzance one is way cooler because of its triangular shape but it is lacking the 10 m diving platform.

Nice walk with sun from above and fog banks offshore. Many surfers in the water. Sand and water felt like a foot massage. The water was extremely clear and we were struck not to see any shells on the beach. Maybe the waters of the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic beyond?

Thought that running between the two bridges across the Torridge would be a neat idea. Getting onto the A39 Torridge Bridge was kind of an adventure: no shoulder, a very narrow grassy curb with shrubs encroaching and cars zipping by at highway speed, not much fun. But the bridge itself had a narrow sidewalk and the view over the river was breathtaking. The Tarka Bike Trail is beautiful, with great views of the river, just like the Coast Path (going around all of Cornwall and Devon), on the other side of the river, which we had taken already yesterday. Great way to start the day!

Started from Tintagel Visitor Center parking lot to explore the castle where King Arthur was purportedly born. A great site, well worth visiting but good to do it on a Monday, in the off season. A lot of climbing is involved. Very fun and interesting. For the return trip, we got back on the Coast Path, which we had been on yesterday in Bideford, to climb up to Tintagel Church, also worth seeing.

Getting over jet lag, read from 1:00 to 5:00 and then went for a run. Haven't run much in the last 12 month, worried about those knees. Lovely stretch along the river Avon. I had to try a few passages that turned out to be dead ends but I eventually found my way. The city seems to have been largely built in the 18-19 century, all from a yellowish sandstone. Very homogenous in style but seems to have seen better days. Lively yesterday afternoon and evening, very quiet this morning, except for a few drunks staggering home.

Up early (3:00 AM) to start transition to GMT, heading for the UK this evening. Finished packing and worked on getting the house in order. Leaving for work, I noticed the sky. Multiple layers of clouds visible, from dark grey to white-yellow and fluffy. Someone said that nice weather is boring as a subject for photography. I agree, the tempests are much more interesting. Looks like I may have an opportunity to check this out on the way home from work. There's always the Green Line if it looks too threatening ...

Squeezed this quick walk in prior to departure for the UK. Two weeks without walk or run for the pooches, I hope that James does a little something with them. New city tree planted on the boulevard by our garage, a Kentucky coffeetree, whatever that is. Looks kind of scrawny, not much thicker than my thumb, I hope that it's not getting damaged before it puts on a little weight. HS track meet still ongoing at Hamline U.

Cool morning (relatively), was looking forward to and enjoyed the warm shower at work. Other than that a lovely ride with a little bit of a headwind. Wen tin from N, shortest way. saved some time. Amazed, Portland is one big construction zone, all kinds of buildings are going up.

Cool morning made me take out my gloves. Notice a van down the block with both passenger windows smashed. Learned later that this was the car of a Somali family that moved to the neighborhood recently. Maybe we have to set up a neighborhood watch to keep ugly xenophobia in check. Noticeable wind from the south, Tried the suggested detour for CLT. Started well, but got bogged down quickly. Will try Portland tomorrow morning.
