Triathlon race 1:30:52 [5] 33.6 km (2:42 / km)

It was another early Sunday morning in the world of racing in Bangkok, Thailand. This time the day started at 3:10 am.! I got to the event side under the Rama 8 Bridge, arranged my gear in the transition zone and then boarded the barge bound for the start of the race up-stream. The long course triathletes were let off first, followed by the short course triathletes. One difference from last year was that the start of the race did not begin on the barge with a blast of the horn, but this year everyone first went into the water and then the horn was sounded. I was not feeling 100% before the start of the race. I was suffering from an upset stomach, so I tried to start the swim steady, but I soon got tired and had some difficulty in my weakest discipline. The water was much more choppy than last year and I was under trained. I got out of the water and ran into the transition zone to get my bike and necessary gear. It was a quick transition and I was off onto the bike course. I was quickly passing short course and long course triathletes on the cycling portion, including picking off some people who appeared to be in my age group. I was feeling good on the bike and I kept pushing on. I got off the bike and quickly changed over to running. The legs initially felt like rubber for the first 1 km. or so, but I was still picking people off and I continued to do so until the end. I placed 15/119 overall in the short course triathlon and 5/28 in the 18-29 age group. I was slower on the swim this year and faster on the bike and run. 19:56 swim (850 meters), 48:50 cycling (27.5 km.) and 20:06 running (5 km.).
