Running 3:11:37 [5] 25.7 km (7:27 / km) +500m 6:48 / km
shoes: New Balance All Terrain 481 20

The race started at 6:45 am. and I set out at a comfortable pace, as I knew the course was very hilly and technical in sections. I passed the 10 km. water stop feeling good (but very hot). I took at gel just past this point, as I made my way up into the hills. I was feeling pretty good from the 10 km. to 20 km. marks and people were not passing me, but I was picking some people off, which felt good! I took another gel at the 21 km. mark, as I attempted to make a push for the finish line 4 km. away. The last 5+ km. was very difficult with lots of up and down, especially considering it was near the end of the race. There was one 150+ meter very steep 10+% hill at about the 24 km. mark that killed me. I walked/crawled up the hill and I was very releaved when I got to the top. On the way down my calf left gastrocnemius cramped up bad. So bad that I fell to the ground on the downhill trail. I attempted to get up, but then my right one also cramped up. Three runners passed me! One runner asked me if I was "ok" and I responded "I will get to the finish line". I slowly got to my feet and hobbled down the hill, down some staires and up a small hill to the finish line. I was very surprised that the winner was only 16 minutes ahead of me. I guess everyone slowed down near the end! I placed 8th/401 overall and 3rd/106 in the 30-39 age group. The second place runner passed me when I was down and he beat me by exactly 1 minute. Overall a very difficult race with a surprising result!

Running race 1:52:23 [5] 21.6 km (5:12 / km) +200m 4:58 / km
shoes: Nike Zoom Elite 8 2015

The race started at 6:45 am. I did not feel particularly strong to start the race and I quickly dropped behind the leaders. There was a steep hill around the 3 km. that I walked up. I took a gel at the 10.47 km. aid station and I got a slight boost of energy as I continued along. I took another gel on the way back at 15.21 km. (the same aid station as the first gel). It was a caffeine gel, so I gave me a good boost of energy, but it was short-lived. A I rejoined the 10 km. route I was motivated to pass as many 10 km. runners as possible and I also passed 1 half marathon runner around the 18 km. mark. I reached the 20 km. mark and I thought that under 1:50 was possible. But they added about 500 meters from the 2017 route and it was a long 1.1 km. (actually 1.6 km.). I placed 17th/711 overall and 17th/393 in the male overall group.
