A very early wake-up at 1:15 am.! I had to walk from my accommodation to the shuttle bus pick-up point at the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel, Kuta, which was about 3 km. away. I got to the shuttle bus pick-up at 2:00 am. and it left quickly for the 1 hour ride to the race start point. When I got off the bus I made the short walk closer to the start point, got ready for the race, checked my bag and found a starting position close to the front of the pack. The gun went off and I settled into a comfortable pace. I passed the 4.2 km. mark in 19:31 and 10 km. in 44:36, where I took a gel. I was running a little quicker then I would have liked, as I was being pulled along by the fast runners. After turning off the highway onto a local road the hills started. The road was narrow and lined with cheering locals, even at 5:30 in the morning! There was a very steep climb at 15 km. and more gradual climbing until around the 16 km mark. I I took this section slow with short strides. I passed the 15 km. mark in 1:13:19 and took a gel. From kilometers 18-21 there was more gradual climbing that took a lot of energy out of me. I passed the 20 km. mark in 1:41:44 and 21.1 km. in 1:48:54. I passed the 25 km. mark in 2:16:32 and 30 km. in 2:50:52 and I took a gel at both of these places. After 30 km. I really started to slow down and I needed to take some walking breaks because I was really hurting! There were some more inclines between kilometers 32-36. I passed the 35 km. mark in 3:23:46 and took a gel. Then after 36 km. it was mainly downhill to the finish line! I took one more gel at 38 km. and tried to pick up my pace to the finish line. I placed 102/1,684 overall and 84/1,411 in the Male category. 33rd fastest marathon out of 38 starts.
