Snorkeling 45:00 [2]

Swam to a small beach, drank some water from a waterfall, found a coconut tree on the beach, cracked 6 coconuts and drank them and then headed back. It started to get dark, so I stuck to the rocks on the shore. There were some worried people when I got back.

Running 48:40 [5] 10.75 km (4:32 / km) +400m 3:49 / km

My Second time running the Singha Songkran Night Run (the last time I ran was in 2015). Still a little sore from the Rome Marathon 5 days before and from walking around all day soaking wet from the Songkran "waterfight". It was difficult to get to the start on time with all the traffic caused from Songkran. I arrived at the start area at 7:30 pm. and I got my race kit, so I had no time for a real warm-up (although I walked a lot to get to the start). The horns went off at 8:10 pm. and the mass of lights began the assent up Doi Suthep mountain on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, Thailand. I took the first part of the race quite slow, as I did not rubber legs before I got to the halfway point. I focused on quick leg turnover, as I picked off half marathon runners that started 10 minutes earlier. It was a relief to reach the halfway point, as I knew it was all downhill to the finish. I coasted downhill to pass 3 people and I was passed by 1 person. I crossed the line in 9th overall out of 1,191 runners and 2/292 in the 30-39 age group. I got a trophy!

Running 3:44:32 [5] 42.2 km (5:19 / km) +150m 5:14 / km

At the expo the day before the race I presented my medical certificate (a requirement to enter the race) that I got from a clinic doctor in Bangkok for 100 THB to get my race package and number. I noticed that they had me starting the race in "Block D" which is the last block! As far as I knew I was going to be starting the race in "Block A" according to the qualifying time that I submitted. I stood in line for a long time to get the problem sorted out, as I guess there were other people with similar problems. They gave me another number unfortunately without my name on it, but I was in "Block A" and that was better. On the race morning I got up at 6:30 am., I had a Cliff Bar and I made the short walk from my accommodation to the start/finish area with another guy that was staying at the same place as me and running the race. I was really excited for the race, more so then any other race in recent memory because it is Rome and I would soon be running in the IAAF Silver Label Acea Rome Marathon! When I got to the start/finish area, wow! It was amazing as I prepared to start the race in front of the world famous Colosseum! The gun went off and the race started at 8:40 am. and I headed down the cobblestone streets. The people in my immediate vicinity were moving quite quickly. Just before the 5 km. mark the 3:00 hour pacers passed me and I knew that hope was over. I passed the 5 km. mark in 21:19 and I was feeling good. From 5.5 km.-7.8 km. there was a nice downhill dropping about 12 meters. I passed the 10 km. mark in 43:43 and I took a gel. I continued along passing the 15 km. mark in 1:06:55 and 21.1 km. in 1:36:14. I was happy with that time, but I knew that there was a long way to go especially because I was not feeling particularly strong and I had a feeling that I was just hanging on, which was not good. I passed the 25 km. mark in 1:56:47 and I took another gel. Just past the 26 km. I started to "hit the wall" and I needed to take a walking break. I was struggling as I walked up the 17 meter hill and passed 30 km. in 2:29:15. I remember thinking to take it 1 km. at a time, but it was very difficult with my body struggling especially my hurting legs. I passed the 35 km. mark in 3:03:20 and I took a gel that did not seem to work. I was taking many walking breaks, as I was having great difficulty running. My legs and feet were quite sore (possibly from all the cobblestone streets). Pain aside the marathon tour of the historical sights in the city was amazing and the spectator support was great! I tried to run as much as I could, but it was unfortunately not possible all the time. I took a final gel at the 38 km. mark and ran most of the final 4.195 km. I placed 2,385 overall and 240/769 in the 30-34 age group.
