I found my starting position at the 4:30 sign, Chariots of Fire started blazing on the loudspeakers, the race start announcement was given and the race started at 7:00 am. It was a perfect day for running with cloudy skies, +16, an east wind at 11 km./hr. Although the humidity was a little high at 77%, but I guess you can't have all perfect weather conditions. The start was crazy with 5,368 runners running down University Cr. The Half Marathon started on the West side of the street, while the Full Marathon and Relay started on the east side where at Pembina Hwy. they joined into one giant mass of people. At this location the Fubuke Daiko drummers put on a performance to encourage the runners. I soon hit the 1 Mile mark in a time of 9:56, 22 seconds faster then my projected pace of 10:18. But I was not worried because other people were saying they were also well ahead of their mile pace. I continued along Pembina Hwy. where it was difficult to get into a consistent pace because I was getting passed my hundreds of half marathon people. I got to the first water stop on Crescent Dr., which was crazy because they clearly didn't have enough people manning it. There was a volunteer yelling at some kids to fill up more cups, so I had to grab a cup off the table myself. Further along Crescent Dr. there was a guy playing the drums to pump up runners and later I saw an old high school friend doing the half marathon, we wished each other luck and she continued ahead of me. Going along South Dr. there were many enthusiastic fans cheering and playing music. At the aid station long North Dr. is where I took my first of 8 Carb-Boom energy gells, 4 Strawberry-Kiwi and 4 Apple Cinnamon. I then passed the first Relay exchange zone where close to 1,000 2nd leg runners and spectators were watching and cheering. I passed the half marathon cutoff at Jubilee St. feeling pretty good with only a little tightness in my left hamstring and some itchiness in the same area on both legs, possibly mosquito bits from the Crescent Park swarms. Going over the Jubilee overpass I passed one of the wheelchair marathoners who started at 6:55 am. I said to him "keep up the good work" and he said "I'm doin just fine brother". I felt like I really started to get into a rhythm at this point (around mile 6.5). I felt great and had some friends cheering me on at the corner of Harrow St. and Mulvey Ave., then my dad taking some pictures at the corner of Academy Rd. and Harrow St. I continued along familiar territory down Wellington Cr., past the second Relay exchange zone. I went across the timing mat by the duck pond placed there to make sure you don't cheat where the Fubuke Daiko drummers were again and then across the Assiniboine Park footbridge and along Portage Ave. as some very light rain fell for a short time. At the Prize Mile at Collegiate St. and Portage Ave. there was music pumping and many people cheering on runners in this otherwise lonely part of the race. Then I went past the half way point where Route 90 goes under Portage Ave. in 2:05:10. I passed Omands Creek where I began to lumber 3 years ago when I ran the marathon. My dad was there again near Portage Ave. and Raglan Rd. taking pictures and cheering me on. Then I made the right turn into my hood feeling good running along Wolseley Ave., seeing familiar faces cheering the runners on. Along Ruby St. my mom was there to hand me 4 gells and Gatorade, grandma to cheer me on and my brother was volunteering handing out water at the third Relay exchange zone. My dad was again at Wolseley Ave. and Canora St. taking more pictures and cheering me on. I continued along taking water and sponges to cool off at every aid station but not Gatorade at all stations because I didn't feel like I needed it. I was feeling amazing and started to pass marathon runners around Mile 18 and began to slightly pick up the pace around the 30 km. mark. I was passing many people that were walking/stretching by the road which gave me motivation to pass more people. I passed the forth and final Relay exchange zone as some very light rain began to fall cooling me off. I was on the home stretch down St. Vital Rd. where there was a guy saying "get your ice cold beer here!" to runners. I was tempted, but that would have to wait. Further along on River Rd. there was someone playing the accordion, people handing out freezes, oranges and playing the drums. I knew it was close as I past the Bishop Grandin Bridge and the Prize Mile on the west side of the bridge. I picked up the pace and continued to pass more people, from the corner of Pembina Hwy. and University Cr. to the finish I passed 25 people in a distance of about 2.35 km. I ended up finishing in 4:11:03, 7/23 in my age group and 364/796 overall. I only lost 0:43 in the last 1/2 of the race; however it seemed like I was going faster in the last 1/2. Overall I am very happy with the time as my goal was around 4:30 and I beat my time from 3 years ago by 51:56.
