Running race 1:39:21 [5] 21.1 km (4:43 / km) +25m 4:41 / km

Goal was 1:40, so I am happy with the result considering my lack of training and rest. Beautiful day for a race, -7/-8, -13/-14 with the wind. Sunny and almost no wind, not even close to hypothermic! Started off the race in the lead group with three other runners. The pace seemed quick, but I felt good, so I stayed with them. At the end of the Fort Whyte Green Corridor Trail the three guys in front of me went right instead of left. I luckily saw the volunteer and sign, so I went the right way and was in the lead for awhile. About 4 km. into the race I was dropped. I was experiencing a stitch in my stomach as I ran through Assiniboine Forest. Two more guys passed me and I stood in 6th place. I started to feel better passing Tuxedo Golf Course and said to myself "don't let anyone else pass me". Just before passing the Duck Pond in Assiniboine Park I heard someone approaching from behind. The guy behind me later asked "can I tuck in behind you"...want else am I going to say but "sure". So, we continued through Assiniboine Park running together. As we ran by Tuxedo Gulf Course he began to pull away, but he went across Grant Ave. instead of turning left and marshal said "you have to go back", so I caught up. Crossing Grant Ave. and Shaftsbury Blvd. we were held up for about 0:05 by a police officer to allow traffic to clear the intersection. The guy that I was running with again started to pull away, but again he made a wrong turn and went left instead of right on a trail in Assiniboine Forest. I yelled at him and said "this way"...should not have said anything! I was now in the lead again until he caught up and we ran neck in neck to the finish. I was hurting at this point and had another stitch in my stomach, but I was not going to let this guy beat me. Again he stopped at a trail junction on the Fort Whyte property and asked "which way?", I said left. With about 300 meters to go I started to sprint, with about 100 meters left he passed me, I surged back to pass him with meters to go to beat him by about 1/2 meter. Placed 6/147 in my start wave and 12/319 overall.
