2017 Raid the Rib Adventure Run

Put together a team Thursday, 2 days before the race. Greg M. and I were lucky WandaAR was free. None of us had raced together before, but I knew everyone was solid. For most of the race I just sat in the back, followed and occasionally offered direction.

We were certain we wouldn’t be able to clear the course and spent all of the planning time trying to determine what made sense. Four of the optional challenges were “all or none” and we wanted the option to get all of those. We opted to drop “The Barkley,” a 75 pointer that was a simple out and back in the wrong direction.

The race started with a non-navigational relay up and down a steep hillside. It was designed to separate teams. The selection was based mostly on insanity; if you wanted to risk your life jumping down a mud side you were rewarded. The order went Wanda, me and then Greg so we could rest our legs as Greg was the freshest by far.

“Room with a View” After the relay we headed to a hilltop that would give us a view of our first control. The hill had multiple form lines on it that made it look higher than it really was. The control was an easy spike and we headed back the route we came in on.

“Canada 150" (all or none) We headed for the white maple leaf on the map that had all features other than streams removed. All of the controls were on small waterfalls and were easy to find. We slowly passed several teams through this area as most of it was runnable. After punching controls A-E we headed towards CP1. We passed Stina, Patty and Sparkles as we approached the attack point for CP1.

After CP1 it was an easy trail run to the attack point for CP2. This is where many teams struggled as there were 2 bridges on the map. It seems that several teams took the first trail after the first bridge thinking they had crossed the second bridge. This took them off of the map very quickly. Since there tends to be a good amount of following at this race, many teams took this route. As we climbed away I turned several times to see teams heading off in the wrong direction. After CP2 we were passed by Harp, Bob and Scott. They had picked up the Barkley and caught us quickly. We kept them in sight on the trail run to CP3 when they finally disappeared.

CP4 and CP5. More trail running with a small detour to CP4 and then on to the first water stop and CP5. We were the second team to check in which surprised us.

"E=MC2" Wanda took on the Mud first, I took on the shorter of the 2 Climbs and Greg grabbed the last Climb which we had already seen. This is the first time since Canada 150 that we had seen more than one team at once.

"SlopeStyle" 150 points (all or none). We led 2 other teams through these 5 controls. Lots of contouring and mud. They weren’t difficult but took us far north from the backbone of the course. After S5 was really my only major mistake. I thought we had to follow the red arrow to CP6. If we had headed straight to the road we could have cut 5-10 minutes off one of our longer legs.

CP7-9. 6 control circles for 3 controls, all on reentrants. We moved through them quickly without issues. We passed a somewhat frustrated KGB at CP8. I think they fell into the CP1 to CP2 error.

CP10. We stayed high and left the trail. The trails were starting to get muddy and the most direct routes were by far the best choice.

"Bermuda Triangle" 150 points (all or none) After CP10 we decided to attempt the triangle which would send us out and bring us back close to CP10. This section of the map had all trails removed, which helped us because they were just mud. The 3 controls were easy and at this point, it was just enduring the mud.

CP11-13. An odd group of controls where we snuck through a campground and found the Bruce trail again. After CP13 we hit the dog bones.

"Dog Bones" 3x50 points. 3 sets of 2 controls. Each set was worth 50 points. One of the controls was within meters of the Bruce trail and the other was just far enough away to require effort. We figured we had just enough time to get all of them.

CP14. A pretty but miserable waterfall. Now we had teams everywhere. Saw Sparkles again for the first time in 3 hours. Time was getting low and we just needed to run. We barely slowed down for the water stop and continued along the Bruce trail. Just before CP15 there was a miserable climb on stairs.

CP15. I think my mind and body were ready to stop. At this CP we could go out and get up to 150 points in the matrix. Greg went and grabbed A fast and then we headed in.

We finished 2nd in coed and 5th overall!
