Ellicottville Rogaine

Arg! Didn't clear the map! I should have, but I allowed one misplaced control to affect me more than I should have. It was off by a good 150 meters and 35 meters in elevation. I then distracted Lina and Chris. Chris calmed me down a little and we found it, but I lost 30 minutes. The rest of the race up until that point I was mistake-free.

The plan was 2, 4, 10, 21,18, 27, 31, 7, 30, 32, 22, 20, 9, 24, 12, 19, 29, 23, 26, 28, 16, 15, 25, 11, 6, 17, 14, 8, 5, 13, 3, 1.

I walked to 2 and 4 since there was a large train and if I ran I wouldn't have gained much. After that I was on my own as I skipped the other controls on top of the ski slope and headed off for the farthest points on the map.

Ran into some loose dogs on the way to 10. I heard the dogs barking for a few minutes after I passed them as Sparkles was on my heels.

21 and 18 were quick and easy. Leaving 18 I ran into Controlled Chaos. Went through 27 and 31 with them. 31 was a little tricky as the boulder was covered with root stocks, but I doubt I lost more than 1 minute.

Leaving 31 Controlled Chaos turned south and ran off the map. I was confused but didn't get a chance to warn them as they were moving fast.

Took straight bearings to 7, 30, 32, 22, 20, and 9. There didn't seem to be a reason to use trails or roads since the under growth wasn't thick.

Trails to the stream below 24 and up to it. 24 to 12 took me right past a family sighting in a gun. The valley made the gun sound very loud. I warned everyone I saw what direction they were shooting.

12, 19, 29 using bearings. Trails to the re-entrant above 23, then the stream to 26. Except 26 wasn't there, just a very long streamer. I caught up to Lina just before 26 and we searched the parallel features. I did try following the stream up from 26 for about 100m which turned out wasn't enough. Then I ran into Chris and we bailed on the control together. As we climbed out of the valley we found the control. It looks like a lost about 20 minutes not 30, if you compared my splits to Sparks.

28, 16, 15, 25, 11 using bearings. Then a ride to 6. Took a bearing to 17. The streams were a little confusing. Saw Sparks with 10m to go. Chris, Sparks and I punched 14 together.

I was still trying to clear so I went for 8 then 5. I would have gotten more points if I went 13, 3, 1 but I just misjudged time and my ability to withstand the heat.

Finished first overall, but was frustrated.
