Orienteering race 1:08:52 [4]

Daze 6 - One Cowboy Relay, 6.3 km

I was so excited for this race because it's so much fun! Maybe too excited because I absolutely botched the first control. Probably lost about 5 minutes. Blah!! After that, everything went most fine in the first 4 loops, and I entered the last loop ahead of a fair amount of folks. But I crossed over a ridge further north than I thought, so started looking for my control too early. At that point, 5 folks passed me. Blah again!! I was also pretty much out of gas on the last loop from trying to make up time after my first mistake. But, I still achieved my goal...getting a crystal! I even got a double crystal. :-)

This week has been such a blast!! Mikell did an excellent job with the courses, but also just making it fun. But now the fun is over for me...now it's my turn to make things fun for other folks...on to the US Champs.

Orienteering race 59:00 [3]

Daze 5 - East Pelican Bay

After a pretty sleepless night from tending to a tender tummy, I thought it would be best to just do the short course. Which would have been fine, except that I massively messed up on #2 and lost everyone but Mike Minium. Oh,well. It gave me a good chance to navigate on my own, which went just fine after the major disaster. I was even halfway thinking that I might just do the long, after all, for some extra training when I came upon an injured Carol Johnson from RMOC. She had fallen and heard something crack and was having difficulty standing on her foot. We were right next to a road, on the way to 9, so I told her to wait there and I would run to the finish and get some folks to drive down and help her out.

So, I finished the short course (#9 was right next to the finish), got Troy and Mikell, and headed out to get Carol. It turns out it wasn't quite as serious as originally thought, and she had managed to hobble down to meet us at the gate. It remains to be seen if she'll be able to compete at the 2014 WRC.

Cycling 54:00 [3]

Since the orienteering felt a little short today, Mikell and I headed out for a tour de Laramie. I was convinced we were going to get wet since the skies to the south were very dark black, but somehow we came home still dry. Win!

Orienteering race 1:14:00 [3]

Daze 4 - Brown's Landing, 5.9 km

Another good day. This was tougher navigationally, so had some screw-ups, most notably on #8 and #17.

I was in with another group today and made sure to maintain contact. We picked up Peggy on the way to 6, when she was having troubles finding the gap in the cliffs. She declared it, "not fun." Then, we all messed up at 8, but I appeared to be the last one to recover. Then I ran slightly past 9, and I was on my own...until I was climbing to 12 and saw my old crew ahead of me. Yay! I couldn't catch up to them, but at least I knew that weren't so far ahead.

Had a good final loop, passing Stina Bridgeman around 14, but messed up on the final control. I was just behind Sam Listwak, heading right for the control, but I saw the parking lot and thought we had gone to far. Went back to check out another knoll, and could then see the final control from that knoll. Drat! Got passed by two folks due to that mistake.

Another beautiful day for running, but soon after SF got back from collecting controls, the skies opened up with a deluge.

Orienteering race 1:54:00 [3]

Daze 3 - Remarkable Flats: Rocky Mt. Goat, 10.9 km

This was a great Daze! I started out knowing that I wanted to do the whole thing, but not sure how long it would take me. Headed out of the start and worked my way to #1 and got there with a crowd of folks that ended up staying together for the entire rest of the race! I decided that I would try to stick with the pack as long as I could. Plus, my old friend and club mate, Kathleen Lennon, was there, and it was nice to run with her.

Early on, I tried to take slightly different routes to try to do my own thing, but they seldom worked out well, so I just kept to the straight line. And it was really cool to have the motivation of others around me. Whenever I saw that I was slipping off the back, I willed myself to go faster to catch back up. I did way more running than planned, and I felt fine. And sometimes I surged ahead just so I wouldn't be last all of the time!

At #8, we had Ted Good join our tribe. I was surprised to see him there, until I realized he was walking. He walked the entire course, and it was all I could do to keep him in my sights. After #17, there was a slight climb, and when I got to the top, I thought that was it. I was willing to lose the pack because I felt drained, but there was a bit of a downhill, and I thought, "Ok, you can at least run the downhills!," and then I caught up again.

At #18, I told Sam Listwak that we had 24 minutes to come in under 2 hours, which had become my new goal about halfway through. He bought into that, so we knew we couldn't slow down. Granted, we were pretty much just going at a fast walk by that time, but still moving well. He better than me, and he took off after #20, and I couldn't keep up. But I still had Kathleen and Ioana Lindsay with me. But then I made a bad micro-route choice error and they got slightly ahead. I finished 30 seconds behind them and under 2 hours!

I am so happy with this race and how good I felt afterwards! Progress.

Orienteering race 1:13:00 [3]

Daze 2 - Devil's Claw

I felt a little better today...not as much ground juniper...or at least I found better ways through it. It was very, very hilly. At one point I could look out across all of the hills and ridges and saw a steady stream of folks plodding along up the hills. It was just that kind of a day. I nailed all of the controls but #2. There seemed to be one extra pretty distinct spur than mapped, so I had to check it out. Of course it was not the one I wanted, so I kept going and found it.

Another beautiful day in the Laramie Range.

Event: Laramie Daze

Orienteering race 1:20:00 [3]

Daze 1 - Yellow Pine

Navigated well...passed some folks by picking a better line on the route choice and into the controls. But got passed back by pretty much everyone because of my slow speed and my complete mental frustration with ground juniper. It just sucks the life out of me. Kind of like the low blueberry bushes back east. A fun course, though, and a great start to what might be the last Laramie Daze.
