Hiking 45:00 [2]

I met JP Lande at Golden Gate Canyon Park today to talk to the rangers about mapping the Green Ranch section of the park. Unfortunately, the Park Manager was not open to that, at this time. He seemed to have issues mainly with the road that leads into the area and the folks who live along the road. Evidently, they have not been so agreeable to the thought of the general public traveling down their dirt road to get to the park, so that area remains closed to the public. The park also has to develop the development plan for that section and secure funding. Blah!

So, we went to look at another area within the main boundary of the park that the Park Manager said he would love to have mapped. Thankfully, he was not anti-orienteering. Just anti-stirring up the local folks for now. He even said that if we wanted to have a rogaine in the park, we could have folks run in the Green Ranch section, just not park there.

Maybe if we map some other sections within the park and establish a good relationship with the park officials, things might change. We'll see.

Note

Spent half the day at the Botanic Gardens, getting trained for the big Chihuly exhibit that opens next week. Spent the other half of the day moving Tanner into his new apartment. Not the Taj Mahal by any stretch of the imagination, but it's his own place. Actually, the vibe I got from that area was like being in the Lower East Side tenements in NYC in the height of the immigration period. Lots of houses subdivided into little nooks and crannies of apartments. Someone is making a boat load of money being a slum lord.

Two hours in the dentist's chair today, and now my teeth are throbbing. Not a fun day. :-(

Event: QOC Jug Bay

Orienteering race 1:13:19 [4] 6.1 km (12:01 / km)

QOC Beer Chase, Jug Bay, Green course

I was in town ths weekend for my sister's birthday party and, luckily, QOC was having its end-of-year event, the Beer Chase. This has always been a great way to finish out the competition season, and today was no exception. The courses are composed of multiple loops (Green had 3) and lots of beer drinking -- one at the Start, one after each loop, and one at the Finish. These aren't bottles, of course, but still pretty sizable glasses. It was a beautiful day, enjoyable course, delicious food at the potluck, and lots of old friends to see. Too bad I DNFed. :-(

I had a goof on the first loop and was trying to make up some time on the second loop. I had fallen in step with Sam Listwak and was chatting away, probably too much, because I failed to see the third control and made a beeline for the fourth one. I kept pushing through the third loop and didn't realize I had missed a control until I downloaded. Oh well, it was still a lot of fun. So, I attribute my miss to the two Sams -- Listwak and Adams.

Since it was also the annual club meeting, I had a chance to tell everyone about the US Champs and Laramie Daze and why they should head out West this summer.
