Orienteering race 1:22:26 [4] 7.2 km (11:27 / km) +156m 10:20 / km

RMOC local event at Bear Creek Lake Park. Red course.

This was the most fun I've had in an orienteering race in a long time, mainly because I started about 30 seconds behind Sharon, unbeknownst to me. I had been talking to a bunch of folks about A-meet stuff, and ended up being one of the last to start. Well, Sharon had been talking to a bunch of folks, too, so she was also a late starter.

I saw her going into #1 and that started the chase game for the rest of the course. I felt like one of those newbies who runs around like a chicken with its head cut off while the stalwart veteran just plods along hitting each control. Well, it wasn't quite that bad, but that's how it felt.

We traded the lead back and forth until I stepped on a cactus...oww! I had to take off my shoe and sock to pull out the thorn and by the time I had my wits about me again, Sharon was down a hill and across a stream. I stayed on the near side of the stream for a while so she wouldn't see me behind her, but then I couldn't find a good place to cross...the stream was quite raging.

Once I got to the other side, she was still just ahead of me...I could see her the whole time. I kind of caught up at #11 because it was a control where you went in and came out on the same trail, so then she saw me and took off. I took another bad crossing through some thick stuff, so she pulled ahead to the next control. She said she knew she was soooo far ahead of me, she had the luxury of taking a drink at that water control. I told her, "Sharon, I saw you go in and out of the control. I was right there."

Then we had a few controls up top, where I kept her in my sights, but from 14 to 15, she took a much, much better line and was ahead by quite a bit. I was on top of a big hill and could see her at the bottom, already running back toward the stream. WTF??

But then, she made a fatal error and I caught up. She took a trail route to #18, and I stayed on a straight line, and we met at the control. She was not happy! Then, we both punched in at the last control together and at the finish together. I beat her by 30 seconds. Needless to say, there was MUCH discussion about route choices and her mistake into 18 afterwards. It was a lot of fun! And we both beat our goal of being less than twice Graham Baird's time.

Rode out the Cherry Creek trail and south along the Platte River. It was very hot out today...well, compared to what it has been. Rain tomorrow, though, which will be good.
