Orienteering 2:02:00 [3] *** 5.6 km (21:47 / km)

This is a tale of two outings. The first one, the intended one, was to be an orienteering race where I moved well, found all of the controls quickly, and reminded myself what this terrain was like in preparation for next year's NAOC. The second outing was a beautiful day spent in the woods, a few hours of walking around, taking in the wonderful scenery. I failed miserably on the former and was quite successful on the latter.

I'm not sure what happened today but it probably had to do with (1) not being in the woods for almost 2 months and (2) having pretty tired legs from my bike ride yesterday. My brain wasn't thinking well from the first control, so I spent quite a bit of time floundering, with the worst control being #5. I couldn't settle on the route I wanted to take, so bounced back and forth between two options for awhile. Then, when I was up on top, I couldn't make sense of anything. It was all pretty green and slow...it's a good thing that NAOC is later in the year. Nothing stellar at all to report for any control.

But, I did have a wonderful time out in the woods. The weather was stellar and the views from some of the high points were beautiful. So, success can be found somewhere, if you look hard enough.

Although my knee felt fine after yesterday's ride, it took a beating today. A lot of icing time afterwards, and some Aleve. Hopefully, it won't be too bad tomorrow.

Cycling 2:10:00 [3] 30.0 mi (13.8 mph)

I felt like going out for a longish ride, so I went exploring on some roads where I keep getting lost when I'm driving. And guess what? I got lost while cycling, too! Luckily, I brought a map snippet with me, so I could figure out where I was, but I ended up having to go on a fairly busy road to get back on track. Always good training to go in traffic every once in a while.

The weather was perfect. Cool temps and overcast. It almost looked like it could rain at any point, but it never did. I felt really good, except for my left calf, which kept feeling like it wanted to go into a full blown cramp but never quite made it, thank goodness.

Hiking 1:11:00 [3] 3.7 mi (19:11 / mi)

A nice hike in Jockey Hollow. It was quite a bit colder, with grey skies and drizzle. I think autumn is here.
