I have been thinking for awhile that I wanted to get back in to backpacking, so I thought a hike would be in order to test the waters. I haven't done any serious hiking for about 8 years, so it was weird to pull out the equipment again. When I put on my hiking boots, it felt just like pulling on an old pair of socks. So comfy.
I decided to start with a shorter hike, so I drove to High Point State Park and started out on the AT. There were beautiful views, but the first couple of miles were really rocky. At one point, I wondered if I had left the trail somehow and had gotten on to a dry stream bed. But, I had not...it was the trail. Not much wildlife to be seen. At one point, I thought I had heard an owl, but it was just a mourning dove.
At about 3.25 miles, I left the AT and started back on a park trail. This was much less rocky, with nice views of a lake that it passed. I didn't see anyone up on the AT, but I did see a few people down on this trail. One mom and her daughter were just breaking camp, after camping next to the lake overnight. The daughter looked around 8 years old, and I thought that seemed like a great mother/daughter outing. They were both smiling, so I guess it went well.
I got back to the car a little sooner than I had anticipated, which is good. The weather today was so gorgeous...lower humidity and pleasant temps. I'm glad I went out. Now I have to decide where I'm going next.
