Sometimes I think that one of the suckiest parts about getting old is losing your memory.

Orienteering race 1:42:13 [3] *** 5.8 km (17:37 / km) +250m 14:30 / km

NAOC Long Champs. W45. Forerunner = 8.6K

Yea, yea, I know. Today was a new day...blah, blah, blah. New day, same sh*t. Once again, it was mainly one control that did me in...#11. I decided to go around to the right coming out of 10, to avoid a big climb. I didn't curve around the hill the right way and nothing was matching up. I happened upon a trail that seemed to be going my way (and which I couldn't find on the map), so I followed it, thinking it would at least take me to the main trail. I did hit the main trail, after coming through many fields, and couldn't find that anywhere on the map. I started up the trail, trying to match features to any part of the map, and I could not. I even started thinking I had run off the map. I hadn't seen another orienteer for about 10 minutes, and those were Blue runners.

I had almost reached the top of the climb, on the trail, when I decided that that was enough, it was time to try to find the Finish and DNF. When all of a sudden, a woman pops out on the trail and comes running towards me! I didn't recognize her at first, but I could read the name on her bib, and it was Magali Robert! Hallelujah...I was at least on the map. Then I decided to try to match things up one last time. Slowly but surely, I thought things started looking right. I cautiously left the trail at a small hilltop, climbed over a fieldy spur, down past a boulder...okay, now things were looking better. I finally made it in to the control and did a little "Ha, ha, I can't believe I found the control" dance.

On to the finish for another less-than-stellar, but still fun, race.

Orienteering race 44:06 [3] *** 2.8 km (15:45 / km) +113m 13:06 / km

Middle distance at NAOC in Cranbrook, BC. W45A course. Forerunner = 4.2k

If this race was a Nancy Drew book, it would have been called, "Mystery at the 2nd Control." Mystery because it took me forever to find it! And from what I heard, others had trouble there, too, but maybe not as much as I did. I found #1 fine, but somehow I got off on the wrong line on the way to #2, and ended up on a parallel trail, and I was able to make everything match up, even to the point of seeing a control up ahead, on a rocky knoll. But, when I got there, it wasn't mine. Rats! Now where was I?? So, I headed back towards the last known place, came across the bigger path, saw that I had cut off at a hill that was fieldier than the one I wanted, so kept running on the path until I saw the correct hill...and the correct path!

After that, things went much better, but the damage was already done. I was happy that I willed myself to keep pushing, even though I was pretty down. Oh, well, tomorrow is another day.

Running 1:00:00 [3]

Today, I went running on the Lake McDonald Trail, opting for the flat lands, while SF chose a hillier route. It was a beautiful day today, no humidity, a nice breeze, and plenty of sunshine. It goes down as a 10 in my book.

Note

Before our run, we hiked the Trail of Cedars. It was all boardwalk and pavement, but it was still interesting.

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Went for a hike on the Flat Top Mountain trail in Glacier NP. The woods were thick and slightly prehistoric looking, perfect environs to hide a grizzly bear, as I was reminded by several people who were at the trailhead and were concerned that I was entering "bear country" on my own. So, I was on high alert, making lots of noise along the way. I didn't see any bears, but I did see a very large moose, with very, very large antlers. He was impressive, standing in a mass of greenery, chomping away.

Note

Not a moose, but so irresistably cute.

Note

Between seeing the photos from Yosemite and being in Glacier, how can anyone say that National Parks are not worth their money??

Orienteering race 27:52 [4] *** 1.7 km (16:24 / km) +34m 14:54 / km

US Sprint Champs. Spokane, WA. Forerunner = 2.6k

I will reiterate that sprints are not my thing, but I still usually enjoy them. Today, I got hung up on the deadly #6, at the foot of the cliff, which I will argue with anyone was not at the foot of any cliff. Otherwise, it was okay. Not as challenging as others I've run. I think I like them best when they are around buildings, like on a campus.

Orienteering race 1:52:59 [3] *** 7.3 km (15:29 / km) +138m 14:08 / km

US Long Distance Champs. Fishtrap Lake, WA. 9.43k on the Forerunner.

Today went much better than yesterday. I walked to #1 (which was in sight of the Start) and took that time to look around to make sure I had some understanding of the map. The course went well except for a parallel error on #13...I was on an open high area to the north of where I wanted to be. It didn't take me too long to figure it out; it was just frustrating. The most frustrating part of the day, though, was the fact that I still have to go so slowly down the rocky hillsides out of fear of falling on my bad knee. I hope that gets better over time.

I did take two bad falls: one where I bent my knee beyond it's bending capacity. I felt nauseous for a few minutes, but then my knee almost felt a little more flexible after that. The second fall was on the way to #13, where, in trying to protect my knee, I landed hard on my hipbone. It didn't hurt much after that, but I think there's going to be a massive bruise.
