Note

Recovering on the sofa from knee surgery, which went well. My doctor said that he actually found two tears, one on each side, instead of only one. I guess he would have seen that with an MRI, but we would have ended up doing surgery anyway, so skipping the MRI was fine decision. He also found some arthritis, which we had suspected. So, he just went in, repaired the tears, cut away some old, dead cartilage, and just basically cleaned it all up.

I was in and out of the hospital in about 6 hours from start to finish. I was able to hobble out of my wheelchair into the car, and have been using my leg judiciously around the house. Mostly, though, I've been elevating it, with ice packs all around.

The best news is that I haven't had any pain, at all. I had half of an Oxycontin in the hospital and the other half last night, more of a preventative measure so I wouldn't be in pain in the middle of the night. My fingers are crossed that I won't have any later. I'm going to test driving tomorrow (thank goodness I have an automatic!) and try to make it to the Quantico Winter Meeting (I won't be orienteering!!). So far, so good.

Hiking 1:05:00 [2]

I was up at Wintergreen Ski resort and couldn't ski, so I went for a hike instead. I was going to try the AT, but there was too much snow and ice crust breaking-through to be done, so I headed out to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is just about .5 miles from the house. The Parkway is closed in the winter, and so not plowed, but it appeared that one vehicle had driven by since the last snow, so I could walk in the tire track and not have to break through. It was kind of weird to be walking on the parkway like it was a big overgrown trail. I also didn't get the benefit of wind cover by the trees, so it was a mighty chilly 6 degrees. Thankfully, the sun was shining.
