Mt. Biking 1:04:45 [2]

This was not so secret mt. bike training. While SF hung controls for tomorrow's event, I went for a ride on some of the roads there. I found a really nice trail that paralleled a stream with massive amounts of beaver activity. It started raining a bit on the way back, but that just felt good. I rode with my iPod and just felt glorious as I was zooming along, singing at the top of my lungs with no one around to hear me.

Note

After biking and control hanging, I convinced Mr. Fox to try letterboxing again. His last foray (about a year ago) was quite unsuccessful, and he declared himself "neutral" to the whole idea. But today was a bit more successful, and he might just be turning the corner. After letterboxing, I agreed to look at the geocache he found by Tie City, but I must admit, it was a poor substitute for letterboxing.

Orienteering 1:33:05 [2] ***

I ran about 2/3 of the Killer Bee loop on the Artillery Spring map. I would have done the whole thing, but I have a blister on one of my toes that was getting worse and the last third of the course isn't the most fun part, according to Mr. Fox. So, I opted out at the 15th control. I had a few problems early on, I think mainly because I haven't run on a 1:15000 map in a while. Once I hit the grasslands though, it went much better.

It was another beautiful day, with light winds and perfect temps. My AOWN sighting today was 4 elk in an aspen grove near Jubal E. Spring. So fine.

Orienteering 55:45 [2] ** 5.1 km (10:56 / km)

I ran the Green Night-O course on the Lights of Cheyenne map. I could definitely feel the altitude today, with tingling arms and legs and shortness of breath. I messed myself up a few times when I thought I remembered where the control was from the Night-O, only to find that my memory is fading. It was splendid running weather with grey skies, light winds and a few sprinkles of rain. It was nice to get out on a map and get used to reading all of the variations of yellow again.

Running 1:08:04 [2]

A very easy run at Happy Jack after a day of travel. It was much cooler than at home, but it felt good. The altitude was a bother on the way up Summit Trail, but not so bad on the way back.

AOWN - one mule deer and three of the infamous Laramie turkeys. Aren't they supposed to be out East right now? Or have they made their way back already?

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Nothing too strenuous. Just a spin while watching the boob tube. Too bad it wasn't Trash TV Thursday.

Running (Trail) 45:08 [3]

I was sore last night after the race, but I didn't feel too bad this morning. I knew I had to go to Hemlock Overlook to hang a few controls for some training next weekend, so I decided to forego the orienteering meet at Fountainhead, and just do an easy trail run at Hemlock, hanging out the controls along the way. I even convinced my daughter, Caitlin, to come along. She runs on the roads and seldom ventures into the woods, but she was game. It turned out to be a beautiful day, and this run was the perfect post-race workout.
