Mt. Biking race (orienteering) 2:17:39 [3] 11.4 mi (5.0 mph) +218m

I was going to do both the mtbo and the foot o at QOC's event today, but after the 15.5 km bike course, I was dead. I seriously bonked on the way to #8. I guess this wasn't a great first ride of the season. I should have just done the short course. Lesson learned.

I did have so much fun, though. I made a few navigational errors, mainly because it was difficult to see all of the trails, especially when I was "zooming" past them.

Mom and Don were down last night, so I missed my running group session. I did the workout tonight instead. It was a beautiful evening and there were loads of people on the trail. I'm glad I got out.

Note

This is what happens when you live in the woods and there's a dead possum behind your house. There were a few of these hanging out on the deck. My cats were freaking out.

Session with my running group. 4 x 800m. I failed in the sense that my first one was the fastest and my last one was the slowest. I have to work on doing the opposite. But I'm happy with how I felt.

Orienteering 1:15:19 [3] 5.4 km (13:57 / km) +146m 12:17 / km

I have missed quite a few QOC events this winter for one reason or another, but I was able to make this one. I arrived early in hopes of getting back home around 2:00 since Mom and Don were arriving at my house around 4:00 and I would still have to take shower and get ready to take Mom out for her birthday dinner. I ended up making it back home around 3:00, but that was more a function of too much chatting in the parking lot before I headed out on the course.

Everything on the course went fine. I drifted a little too far to the right on my way to #6 and ended up going through a few more reentrants than planned. Other than that, the navigation was very good. The running was also not bad, except for a journey through the field on the way to #5. It was wide open with small saplings that had been planted, and I was aiming for an old-growth tree that was on the map. I guess I was focusing so much on the tree that I didn't see the remnants of older saplings that had been cut down, leaving about 3" tall stumps that were maybe an inch across (i.e., difficult to see). I must have gone down about 4-5 times while crossing that stupid field. On the last one, I got up and yelled, "Oh come on!!"

Then I hightailed it home to get ready for dinner. We (me, Marit and Karin and their husbands) took Mom and Don out for a Norway-themed dinner at the Restaurant at Patowmack Farm. The restaurant is in the greenhouse of this farm and had a beautiful view of the Potomac River and Point of Rocks. Luckily, the restaurant did its own interpretation of some of the dishes, something we were especially glad for when it came to the lutefisk! Most importantly, Mom loved it!

Running 11:03 [4] 1.0 mi (11:03 / mi)

My running group held the first mile time trial, and I further confirmed that I am not a fast runner. :-) However, I will say that I ran faster than I thought I would, so there's a bit of a win. And this was on the W&OD, so there was a slight hill in the middle of the course. And I'm sure I could think of more excuses, but I won't because I know I'm slow. I've been slow my whole life, even before my knee issues. My fastest timed mile in my life was 7:36, and I almost puked when I finished. So my goal is to improve with this class and run the last timed mile faster than this one.

Running 25:25 [3] 2.04 mi (12:28 / mi)

I have joined a running group to get me out after work. Too often, I come home from work with every intention to go for a run, but then it doesn't happen. So I thought by joining a group, it would be more incentive to go. And it was quite fine. There were about 15 people there, of all levels. I'm hoping it's going to help me break out of the one and only pace I have. We'll see.

Tonight was a shortened run because there was some administrative stuff to do and then intros. On Wednesday, there'll be a timed mile. Yikes!

Strength Training (10000) 1:00:00 [3]

Back to the standard Body Pump class.

Strength Training 30:00 [3]

Three more hours out in the yard. That should be it for now. Next up - mulch.

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

Not Body Pump! I spent 6 hours in the yard today, raking up the leaves from last fall, pulling out a hillside of English Ivy, and just generally doing a spring clean up. I was pretty exhausted.

Interesting discovery from the yard work. I've thought for years now that I was allergic to English ivy, just like I am to poison ivy. I had come to that conclusion after seemingly having had a reaction years ago. But I guess I'm not since I was pretty much swimming in the stuff by the time I was done with the pulling today. I tried to be so careful in the beginning, but I kept getting sucked deeper and deeper into it, so I decided that this would just have to be a test to see if I was truly allergic to it. Thank goodness I'm not!

Some excitement...I was in jury duty today, and maybe for the next few days. Unlike many folks, I was so excited to get the jury summons. To me, it's exciting to see our justice system up close as long as I'm not directly involved! As expected, though, it wasn't the best time for me to be out of the office, but I caught up a little at night.

I've been surprised at how solicitous the court staff and the judge have been towards the jury. They have been so nice and keep apologizing for the inconvenience. We even got a little history on the jury process and why it's so important. I'm loving it!

I headed to western Mass this weekend to see a man about a table. The man is a furniture maker and the table...really tables...is a set of nested tables made from cherry. They're beautiful. I stayed with Peter and Gail and had a fabulous time. I went for a run at Walter's and had the privilege of cooking with these two fabulous women.
