Note

It's been a busy, painful week.

After my run last Tuesday, I discovered some blistery bumps on my bottom. They weren't itchy, but they were quite painful and after a visit to the doctor on Thursday, I was diagnosed with shingles. I started the anti-viral medication, plus Tramadol for pain and Gabbapentin just to feel better. Because it's on my bottom, it's difficult to sit.

Also on Thursday, Caitlin flew in. And Tanner and Graham arrived at 5:00 am on Friday. Then I hosted julebord on Friday night for 19 people. All the while in quite a bit of pain and tired from the medication. The kids and I spent the weekend in various museums and visiting my sisters. And I still can't really sit down. I'm going to try going for a run tomorrow morning.

Running 51:00 [3] 3.32 mi (15:22 / mi)

A Christmas morning run with Meg. Not too cold out, and it was a nice way to start the day. Not much going on today since my kids are coming out on Thursday for a long weekend. I'm hosting the family julebord this year.

I spent the afternoon raking leaves. When I moved in I wondered if there would be any bulbs coming up in the spring, and I contemplated planting some just to make sure, but the time got away from me. So I had mixed feelings when I found an unbelievable amount of bulbs coming up all throughout the wooded area in front of my house. So happy because they were there, but a little concerned that they were coming out already! I covered them up with a layer of leaves, hoping that will stop any more progress, but it might be a lost cause.

Running 39:49 [3] 3.01 mi (13:14 / mi) +68m 12:22 / mi

After a full day of working on my house, I decided it was time to go for a run. I created a new route so I can monitor my progress. Quite a few nice hills.

Running 36:33 [3] 2.64 mi (13:51 / mi) +34m 13:19 / mi

Another exploratory run. Unfortunately, the one new trail dead-ended at a pretty busy road that I had no desire to run on. So, I backtracked to the trail that leads to the W&OD and ran along that for a bit. It's a nice running trail that is beside the paved bike trail in that it has rolling hills that add some extra oomph.

The first trails were very muddy and, at times, resembled small streams. So that stretch was a little slower as I tried to navigate through/around the mess.

I also scouted out some good hills for future interval training to get me ready for next summer in the Dolomites!

Running 40:17 [3] 3.0 mi (13:26 / mi) +37m 12:56 / mi

I worked from home today and was able to go for a run during my lunch hour. I also went to a new massage therapist here in Reston. My shoulder has been hurting off and on since I fell while running a few months ago. She was really good, and I think I'll be going back.

Orienteering race 1:20:58 [3] 6.0 km (13:30 / km)

It was pretty cold outside and I had a lot of work to do around the house, but this was the Mid-Atlantic Championships, man! I couldn't miss that. And since I wasn't going run the relay, I opted to run the Green course instead of Brown.

Nadim set a good course, with some definite opportunities to go woefully wrong. But, I didn't do that...just kind of slow. And of course, once I got going, I heated right up and was slowly pulling off the layers.

And then home again to continue with my chores.

Orienteering 1:39:36 [3] 6.5 km (15:19 / km)

Ran the Green course at Prince William in between working around my house. A slightly uninspired course through some pretty crappy woods. But, it was still nice to be out in the woods.
