Orienteering 50:18 [3] 4.34 km (11:35 / km) +89m 10:30 / km

A very, very fun course with very, very poor execution. Blah.

RMOF Day 2. One Cowgirl Relay 6.6 km

This was a lot of fun, as usual. We had a little scare before the meet began due to I-80 closing down for an accident. At first the police were estimating it would be closed for 2 hours (!), but then they opened it up to the Summit exit, which is all we needed. We ended up pushing the start back by 30 minutes.

I did fine on this course, mostly walking again. No navigational issues. The sun is getting to me, and I start to feel woozy. The last loop almost did me in, but I managed to finish.

RMOF Day 1. Classic course 7.7 km

My plan was just to walk this course in order to get used to these maps again and to adjust to the altitude. I pretty much succeeded in that, but I did run down some hills. ;-)

I felt fine, for the most part. I got a little too hot on the way to #7 and was feeling woozy. Bob Huebner gave me some water and that was good. And then there was water at #10, which helped a lot. Luckily, there was absolutely no troubles with my navigation.

I attended my first Squirrel Kill/Squirrelnado race! This has traditionally been the final event in QOC's Summer Sprint Series. I couldn't make it last year, but this year I did, and it was so much fun. Ted Good organizes it with the help of his wife, Darcy. I think each year it's a little different, but always pretty involved.

This year he had 11 different courses in 9 different parks. You can choose how many courses you want to do, the order you want to do them in, whether you want to do them on foot or on bike, how many controls you want to do on each course, etc. And Ted has rules and scoring for each of the scenarios. Plus a few other non-orienteering activities for points (a dolley race, building a boat, and taking an orienteering quiz).

Evidently the attendance this year was lower than last year, but we still had about 15 or so finish some permutation of the courses. And I ended up coming in 2nd, much to my shock. It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Hiking 4:24:48 [3] 6.77 mi (39:07 / mi) +522m 31:33 / mi

Meg and I are taking her daughter, Marina, back to St. Lawrence University this weekend, so we decided to go for a hike up Mt. Algonquin in the Adirondacks. I was so excited to be hiking again in the mountains, and I got all of my equipment ready.

You have to pay $10 now to park in the Loj parking lot, but when we got there, the guy in the entry booth was telling us the lot was full and we would have to park in the satellite lot that was a mile away. But, as he was talking to us he got a call on his walkie-talkie, telling him they had found one more spot! Yay! So we started out from the Adirondack Loj, and headed out from the Mt. Hoevenberg trailhead.

Everything was going fine. The weather was a little misty, but that kept it cool. The trail wasn't too muddy, and there were no bugs. Soon, though, the trail got rockier and rockier. We were still making good time and having fun.

But then, about a mile from the summit, on a pretty steep rocky section of the trail, disaster struck. The sole of my right boot came loose.

After tying it on with my gaiter's ties, I told Meg and Marina to keep going up, I was turning around, and I would meet them at the bottom. But they didn't want us to split up, so we all headed down together.

After a bit, I had to use my bandana to hold my boot together, and then the sole of my left boot came loose! I found someone on the trail with some duct tape, and used that on my left boot, but eventually that, too, would need a bandana.

By the time we got down to the flat part, with a mile to go, I was sliding all over the soles, and that was making my feet, knees, and hips hurt, so I just ripped off the soles and walked on the soleless bottoms, which felt pretty good.

In the end, my boots made it into a trash can in Lake Placid. Good riddance. Sadly, another failed attempt by me to climb in the high peaks region.

Running 1:02:25 [3] 4.2 mi (14:52 / mi)

Back at the beach. This was pretty dismal because my GI system was not cooperating. We had a celebration dinner last night for Meg's daughter, Marina, who turned 21. Something in that meal did not agree with me. Maybe the artichokes. Or the clams.

I also made red velvet cake for the first time. Meg often calls on my to be the baker, and Marina wanted a red velvet cake. At first, I couldn't tell why this cake wasn't just a regular chocolate cake with red food dye, but I think the buttermilk, vinegar, and baking soda make it different enough that it is something all on its own. Topped off with cream cheese frosting, it was quite delicious.

Mt. Biking 50:23 [3] 5.31 mi (6.3 mph) +101m

I went for a ride at Black Hill Regional Park, where I went kayaking last weekend. I don't know where the race will go on bikes, so I just rode the most popular trail in the park. It was a lot of fun, and I didn't feel as rusty as I thought I would.

At one point, though, I thought I heard someone coming up behind me, so I turned to look. No one was there, and when I turned back around, I was inches away from wrapping around a small tree. A quick lean to the right, and I narrowly escaped a painful experience. Phew!

Running 44:51 [3] 2.97 mi (15:06 / mi)

An after work run without my Garmin. :-( I thought it had been charging all day, but I guess I didn't snap it all of the way in, so it was not charging. I just used my phone instead.

Very wet and muggy and buggy and icky.
