Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

This was the first night that I felt okay enough to exercise. So I went to Body Pump, and I started thinking that I might have gotten my stomach virus from the gym on Sunday. I always wash my hands right after class because gyms are not the most sanitary of places, but on Sunday I had to rush home and didn't wash until I remembered later. So tonight, I was very careful to wash up asap.

Brown Course at Fountainhead. I convinced my sister, Marit, to go with me, so after a visit to Ikea we headed to the meet site. Of course I knew how hilly Fountainhead is, but I was still severely whipped by some of the hills. I was doing fine, navigationally, and even moving pretty well for the first 2/3 of the course. But then I started losing steam. The last three controls were on the back of the map, on an inset. They weren't overly exciting at all; mainly trail runs, so I lost a lot of time there. The last control, though, was a complete parallel error.

There were two trail junctions right on a stream, one up the stream from the other. We were at the upper one, but in my quick look at the map, I looked at the lower one. So, I took a trail that followed the stream for a bit and then turned uphill...all was fine. But then things started to get wonky. I should have hit the parking lot, but I was nowhere near a parking lot. I stopped to figure it out when Greg Lennon ran by, muttering about where we were. So, I just headed due north, knowing I would at least hit the road and then could turn left to get to the parking lot, which is what eventually happened. What a cluster at the end of a fairly good run. Blah!

Went for a little bit longer of a bike ride. While it is dumping snow in Laramie, today hit 92˚ in Reston, down a bit from yesterday. Ugh!

The sides of the W&OD trail were covered in blooming honeysuckle, so the smell was heavenly for the entire ride. The trail was pretty crowded, but still manageable until a peloton of about 20 guys went speeding past me. It was a little scary!

And it looks like I got home just in time. I saw the dark clouds as I was biking out.

Body Pump. I'm amazed by how good this makes my knee feel. I think I break through whatever scar tissue might still be forming with all of the squats and lunges.

Brown course at Rosaryville State Park. Published length was 3.7 km.

With all of my kids away, I decided to spend Mother's Day exactly how I wanted. So I slept in a bit, read the paper, and then headed off to orienteering on a beautifully sunny day. Such a nice change from the past few days. I went to Virginia Tech on Thursday for a few days with my sister, Karin, for my niece, Anna's, graduation. It rained pretty much the entire time we were there...rain and cold. It was still fun, though. My brother and his wife had rented a cabin, and two of Anna's other aunts from her mom's side were there. We all have known each for 35+ years and enjoy each other's company very much, so we had fun despite the weather.

Today at Rosaryville went fine. I ran a lot more than last time, but I managed to make a pretty big goof at #2, so that negated any speedier pace. It was nice to talk to a few folks afterwards, and especially nice to finally meet Pepper:

As I was standing there, talking to Amy Louden, I felt something crawling on my head. I reached up and pulled it off...a tick! Yuck. So I high-tailed it home to take a shower and do a thorough inspection. Nothing else has shown up yet.
