Orienteering race 1:13:18 [4] 4.5 km (16:17 / km) +215m 13:09 / km

Brown Course at PWF. I had signed up for Green, but when I got to the park, I just wasn't feeling it. Green was 6.5k with 285m of climb. I had gotten to the park in hopes of getting out on the map before the official 11:00 start time, so I didn't want to waste that early start by taking twice as long on the Green course. I had things to do back home. So I dropped to Brown, which turned out to be perfect.

After a few slight missteps out of the start, I was actually feeling pretty good in the woods. I still can't lift my left knee very high, so I stumble on pretty much everything out there, but at least it wasn't hurting as much as it did in Georgia. I felt like I was moving well and comparing splits to the top ladies on Brown, it looks like that was true. I was keeping up, at least. But then I got to #9, a control location I knew very well. I had a control in there when I set the US Champs in PWF and I've been on other courses with controls in that area, so I knew it could be tricky. I almost took the trail all of the way around, but in the end, I cut into the woods after the bridge on the Quantico Creek trail. I should have stayed on the trails.

I don't know if I psyched myself out, and I'm pretty sure I must have gone right past the control without seeing it, but I found myself up on the trail, next to a control in a depression, so I knew where I was. I went back down the slope, towards my control, but didn't go north enough and went too low, so missed it again. I was just turning back uphill to go back to the trail and try again when a scrap of orange caught my eye and I saw the control. Pure luck. Argh!!

Oh well, I feel really good about the rest of the course, but of course, just wishing I could run faster. I guess those days are done.

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

Back to Body Pump class.

I always think I'm going write some great post when I add my training, but it rarely happens. And then I read Peggy's log, and it's some fabulous story. She can make going to McDonald's for an ice tea sound exciting. :-) And Alex's race reports leave me on the edge of my seat. And of course Swampfox's stories usually leave me shaking my head and smiling.

One day I might get into the entertaining log mode, but for now suffice to say my life is a little hectic, I miss my calmer days in Denver, and I hope to get into some kind of regular routine at some point.

Swimming 19:00 [3]

Warm up: 100
Pyramid: 25/50/75/100/75/50/25 with :15 between sets
Cool down:100

I've been sad/distressed/frustrated all day. I always thought there was a chance that Trump could win the election, and when he did, I thought, "We just have to get through these next 4 years." But after just one week in office, he's done so much to undo a lot of Obama's great work and is going down a road of complete insanity. I don't know if this country can survive 4 years of this. It has already turned into a country that I don't recognize. Thank God for the people who are willing to stand up against him. The marchers last week; the people protesting at the airports around the country tonight, welcoming any immigrants; CREW, who is suing Trump for violating the emoluments clause. We just need to keep harassing him.

I thought this was Tom Bruce.

Note

It's official. I go under the knife on March 7 for a total knee replacement on my left knee. Ironically, I'm back at the place where I had my first knee surgery in 1983. The circle of life.

Orienteering race 1:35:48 [4] 5.5 km (17:25 / km)

Little Bennett Green course. 4.36 miles on my Garmin.

I wasn't going to go to this meet because of the predicted cold weather. But then Peggy told me not to wimp out, so of course I had to go. I may be a lot of things, but I am not a wimp. But, I should have stayed home. :-)

I just could not get my head into this at all. Plus, I was feeling the Body Pump class from yesterday, where I decided to up my weights on all of the exercises. Not a smart idea.

I made big errors on #2 (went up the totally wrong reentrant) and #6 (wasn't sure where I was on the trail and wandered a bit up and down the trail until I figured it out). I guess I'm glad I went, but would have been happy to just go to the gym, too.

Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

Body Pump. I almost didn't go this morning because I was still a little tired from running last night, but I forced myself. Plus...snow!!

Swimming 27:00 [3] 0.9 km (30:00 / km)

An empty pool when I began. Heaven! I felt really strong tonight. That's not always the case.

Warm up: 100
Drills: 8 x 25
Swim: 4 x 100
Cool down: 100

Running 42:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (24:00 @3) + (8:00 @4) 3.05 mi (13:46 / mi) +161m 11:50 / mi

After my swim session, I hit the treadmill for an interval running session. I put it on 1% incline because it feels better that way. I felt pretty good tonight.

Swimming 20:00 [3]

An easy workout during an easy week. Halfway through my workout a guy asked to share the lane. Of course I said yes, but I regretted it. He had the widest stroke I've ever seen, so a few times we bumped hands as we passed, and that was with me hugging the lane divider. A little annoying.

Warm up: 100
Pyramid: 25, 50 , 75, 100, 75, 50, 25 w/ 15 secs
Cool Down: 100

Swimming 30:00 [3] 0.9 km (33:20 / km)

I told myself that I couldn't go to the gym until I finished my column for ONA since I am a big procrastinator and I'm already late with it. By the time I got that done and got to the pool, it was around 4:00 and the pool was quite packed. I was surprised because I've pretty much been able to get a lane to myself each time, but today a few of us were swimming laps in the open swim section since no one was there. I was extra careful to make sure I didn't have a head-on collision with anyone.

Also, I hate the kick drills, mainly because I usually don't feel like I'm moving at all. But today, I felt like I was going faster. Progress.

Warm up: 100
Drills: 8 x 25
Swim: 4 x 100 (focus on rotation (25m), arms (25m), kick (25m), all together (25m)
Kick: 4 x 25
Cool down: 100

Cycling 40:00 [3] 7.4 mi (11.1 mph)

After swimming, I went into the gym section to do some cycling. I was surprised to see that there were no cycles like the one I use at the Reston gym, just spinning-type bikes and recumbent bikes, so I chose a recumbent one. I didn't think I'd like it because it was a weird position but I got used to it eventually. I think it's better for my knee.

Warm up: 10 mins
Intervals: 7 x 1 with 2 min recovery
Cool Down: 11 mins.
