Orienteering race 1:15:35 [4] 5.8 km (13:02 / km) +295m 10:23 / km

This was not quite as much fun as the night-O, mainly because I headed out too soon after eating breakfast. My stomach was not happy pretty much the entire race. That combined with very warm temps made it a death march at times. I had trouble on #4, where I question the mapping of the rock, but I eventually found it and that was the only control that gave me issues.

The view from one of my controls:

I didn't hang around too long after coming in because I had to get back to Denver to do my volunteer shift at the Botanic Gardens. It was a busy weekend!

Core Conditioning 1:00:00 [3]

Barre class before heading out to Buena Vista for an orienteering weekend. It should be fun...the weather is finally beautiful.

Orienteering race 58:16 [4] 4.6 km (12:40 / km) +125m 11:09 / km

What a fun weekend of orienteering! It began with a night-O which went really well on several fronts, the most important of which was that I was not injured! I love night-O's, but considering how often I fall during the day, it's a little nerve wracking to go out in the dark, but all went well. I had a little trouble on the first control, and then it was fine after that. I thought I was moving pretty well, but Brooke beat me by a few minutes, so more work is needed.

Core Conditioning 1:00:00 [3]

Barre class with a new instructor. I had heard that she was good, but she wasn't really as tough as some others. On my way out of class, though, I saw another, new class going on in the other classroom...a Total Body Conditioning class that I used to take on Sunday mornings but stopped because that is really the only day I can sleep in. And it was the same instructor, who is really good. So, I think I'll switch out Wednesday barre class for the TBC class. Yay!

Note

No training today because I had Lead Ambassador training at the Botanic Gardens tonight. Before the class, though, I picked up my first delivery of the CSA I joined this year. It's through the Botanic Gardens, from their location down at Chatfield, and it's the first CSA I've ever joined. I just wanted to be forced to try new vegetables instead of always sticking with the safe ones. The first delivery was a little lackluster due to all of the rain we've been having...everything is a little slow to get going. So I got spinach, chives, oregano, and radishes. Maybe it will be a little more exciting next week.

Running 39:44 intensity: (18:00 @2) + (21:44 @3) 3.1 mi (12:49 / mi)

I worked in the garden all morning, and then did some grocery shopping for a Memorial Day BBQ, all in the remarkable sunshine that has been missing for the past 3 weeks. So, of course, when I was heading out to go running, the grey clouds moved in and the wind picked up. I thought that it might just pass north of the park, but that was not to be. I got rained on a little...not too bad. But the scary part was the lightning, especially when two bolts hit just overhead. And then I couldn't remember...should I hide under a tree? Should I stand in an open field? What is the correct lightning protocol??? Thankfully, I was not struck.

Core Conditioning 1:00:00 [3]

Yay! I finally got to the gym to take a barre class. We had a sub who was very tough. I loved it.

And now...it's raining again.

Running 38:40 intensity: (18:40 @2) + (20:00 @3) 3.1 mi (12:28 / mi)

I went over to Wash Park in between rain storms with the intent of going for a walk. My work is having a fitness challenge between now and July, and I'm on a team with the rest of my department. I was woefully behind in my steps this week, ironically because I was so busy with work! So, I had to get moving.

When I got to the park, though, the sun came out and it was so beautiful and I felt good, so I broke out in a jog. The park wasn't very crowded so it was a nice, relaxing outing. Glad I made it out.

Note

Well, this week has been an utter fail at life-work balance. Let's hope the weekend is better.

Mt. Biking 1:00:00 [3]

Used the mt. bike this morning to set out the final controls and a water control with 3 gallons of water. As I was driving to the event, it was pouring rain, with next to zero visibility. After I set out one control, the sun came out and the skies were blue! Was it going to be a beautiful day, after all??

No! The skies turned grey again and throughout the day, the winds picked up and the temperature slowly dropped. Luckily, the rain held off until there were only 4 people left on the course. But when it started, it was fierce. The control picker-uppers were extra valiant, indeed. It was cold and wet.

We got out of there around 5:00. So, 8 hours in the cold and wet took its toll on me. I made a beeline for home and into the shower. I think I stood under the hot stream of water for about 30 minutes. Along the way, my toes went from numb to stinging to warm. It was a long day, but I heard really good feedback on the courses, so that made it all fine. :-)

Note

And now it's snowing.

Orienteering 1:20:00 [2]

Hanging some controls for tomorrow's event. I feel much better about the event than I did a few days ago when I had a total melt down. Having to create new courses within a week of the event didn't help matters. My main issue was trying to make the final map look pretty. I was using Ocad 11 Course Setting software, and it wasn't very user friendly in letting me place objects like the scale, map title and credits, etc. At least, it wasn't friendly to this user.

In the end, after some tears, I sent the whole mess to my saviour, Doug Berling, who made them look beautiful and even sent them to the printer for me. I will be a little glad when this event is over, hopefully before the snow moves in on Saturday,!

Orienteering 57:43 [3]

I was back out at Chatfield because I have to change my courses. The South Platte river has gotten too high to be crossed safely, so I'm having to keep the Orange course on the west side and then run Green and Red north to the road crossing, a few controls on the other side, and then back over to the west side and south to the finish. This is not going to be the most exciting of Red and Green courses, mainly because there are so many trails in the park, that it could just turn into a long White course. I was thinking about printing the map without any trails, to add a little more difficulty. I'm still thinking about that. I know we did that in QOC with the Wheaton map, and it worked out just fine.

Here's a link to a video of the river: https://flic.kr/p/scPe7S

ps: how can I embed this video?

Orienteering 1:21:00 intensity: (40:00 @2) + (41:00 @3)

Putting out some more streamers at Chatfield for next weekend's event. The South Platte River was running very high and very fast today. I don't think it was safe to cross in the couple of spots I looked. I really hope it goes down by next weekend, but we have a few days of possible afternoon thunderstorms forecast.

I always forget what a trashy park Chatfield can be once you get off the trails. There is debris...like old construction stuff and old park stuff...in many places in the park. Plus, the vegetation can be kind of nasty...with thistle, prickly pear cactus, and all sorts of plants with adhesive-like hitchhiker seeds. And today, I got a piece of cholla stuck in my calf. I didn't think cholla was in the park, but now I know better.

On the bright side, I saw many beautiful birds and even a beaver swimming across a pond. And, I didn't get rained on.

Running 25:41 [3]

Chatfield is pretty linear, so once I was done streamering, the only thing left was a trail run back to the car. This actually felt pretty good. And, I just beat the rain.
