The first ski-o of the year! RMOC had our annual event at Eldora and man, was it windy! I got up there pretty early (8:15) because I had to stop by the club's storage locker first to get some supplies. We set up registration in the waxing shed and then waited for the crowds. That's when the coldness started to creep into my toes.
And...welcome to James Baker! He's in Woodland Park now, and it appears he'll be staying there for many years. RMOC is thrilled to have someone with his experience join the club. He's already starting to help...he was on registration duty yesterday, which was wonderful because we had an influx of ~30 skiers from the Boulder Junior Nordic Racing Team try out the Medium course. I wasn't back yet when they finished, but it sounds like they had a good time.
I eventually went out on the Long course, mainly as a way to warm up. Doug Berling put out a nice course, which I was enjoying until the penultimate control, when he had us climb back up the mountain, to the very top, only to turn around and ski right back down to the finish. I took a little bit of a short cut on a snowshoe trail, which worked out fine until the last third, when I had to take off my skis and walk down because the trail got very steep and twisty in the trees.
Despite the cold and torrential winds, it was a fun day. But I felt a little silly by the time I made it down to Boulder, where it was 55˚ and I still had on 3 layers on the bottom, 4 layers on top, a hat and a scarf. A little bit of overkill at that point. And by Monday, it's supposed to hit 70˚ in Denver. Crazy weather!
